Just updated to El Capitan on my Late 2011 MBP (8 GB RAM) and it's extremely slow and laggy.

Really disappointing after reading all the positive comments. I feel like Charlie Brown on Halloween.

"I got a rock..."
Check to see if Kernel_Task is run high CPU %. My early 2011 15" MacBook pro did. I had to have a Fan blow on it. Unfortunately this is not Limited to EC.

And for a hilarious reason

GREAT FIX APPLE hahaha

cough government pressure cough

LOL, good to know. Now I can stop looking for it and get on with work!
Thx,

okay, scary... I just found out about pike efi E.C. update and was able to boot my Mac Pro 1,1 in to El Capitan...
No Flickering like Yosemite in safari anymore. Might actually be usable?
Why can't apple just release these two little files and everyone would be happy.

The worst OS X update after Yosemite. Took a long 1 hour and 45 minutes to update install on i7 QC MBP with discrete GPU. After installing, battery life falls to just 2.45 hours compared to 7 hours on Yosemite. App takes longer to open and the beach ball is hideous. Start up and shutdown time just over 3 minutes(!). Disappointed.
Something wrong with your Mac since mine took about 30 minutes to update install and my boot and shutdown time are just a few seconds (a little less than Mavericks)

I think a lot of people have the Windows mentality when it comes to an OS update. Windows used to be a real disaster and needed clean installs constantly in order to run fast. Mac doesn't use a registry nor the same kind of installer system that Windows does so I'm not sure why I've seen people saying that they are going to clean install.

Whether you do a clean install or a upgrade install is all a matter of preference. I always do a clean install of major OS X releases. For me it is easy as I have all the user accounts on a separate partition so when I do a clean install of OS X the user accounts are left intact. Yes, I do have to reinstall the third party applications again but I don't mind doing that because it gives me a chance to re-evaluate if I even need the application any longer. So for some people a clean install has nothing to do with having a Windows mentality. Besides I have been using Macs since 2002.

I am really looking forward to installing OS X 10.11. Just need to find the time to update 4 Macs.

What you are describing certainly does not sound normal. If you are willing as a test, create a new partition on your internal hard drive and clean install OS X 10.11 to the new partition. Boot to the clean 10.11 install, set it up but don't install anything other then the basic system. Now see if you experience the same thing you described. When you are done, boot back to your primary partition and delete the partition that you installed 10.11 on to.

Trying to get in early in hopes of someone delivering the answers...

Could anyone verify with certainty:
  • Will it run Adobe CS 5.5 programs with no issues?
  • Will it run Pages '09 with no issues (especially the DTP side functionality)?
Earlier betas had some trouble with these and I'm wondering if these are working now or if 10.9.5 or maybe 10.10 is the last OS for those 2?

For those who want to come back pitching upgrades, I need Pages 09 for the DTP side of that program (something the "new" and "improved" version of Pages can't match). And I'd rather keep using Adobe 5.5 than get on the subscription program for Creative Cloud.

I have heard that Yosemite will run both with no big issues. Can anyone on the final incarnation of Yosemite confirm that too?

Thanks for any reliable answers.

Edit: made corrections to the latter question about Yosemite

I've been running Pages '09 on 10.10.5 without any problem. Would also like to know if it runs on El Capitan before doing the upgrade. Agree that 09 is way better than the more recent incarnations.

I strongly suggest you to make an USB bootable disk... I just finish to update three Macs... A lot of time (especially for the old Mini)

Thank you for replying. Do you use the desktop publishing side of Pages '09 on 10.10.5? In other words, NOT the word processor part of Pages but the part they call "Page Layout" when setting up a new page? That's really the part that I want to know about. If you do use that, any issues in 10.10.5?

And if you do take the leap to El Capitan, could you PM me or remember this thread and reply back to let me know if that Page Layout side of '09 works well there too. I use '09 Page Layout a great deal- have even convinced clients to go Apple on the strength of THAT part of the program as a simple- but capable- DTP solution without requiring a huge learning curve.

I wish Apple would have at least saved that section of Pages '09 when they "upgraded" Pages to the new version, maybe calling it Apple Publisher or something. That would have supported going Apple Word Processor on OS X & iOS in the new Pages while still keeping the power of the DTP around for OS X.

Since it sounds like Adobe CS 5.5 is fine with El Capitan (after getting Java 6 installed), this is the one holdout question that remains for me.

I installed El Captian last night with no difficulty. I love it! It is smooth and fast. I had problems with Yosemite from day one after installing it on my 2012 rMBP , the first OS that has been a problem for me. Websites would be slow to load and frequently wouldn't load at all and I'd have to close and re-open. The computer would freeze and I would have to do a hard reset. I took it to the genius bar and it was checked and Safari was re-installed but it made no difference. The only issue now that isn't really a problem is that the trash always has recovered files in it once I restart the computer. I was told at the genius bar that this is normal for Yosemite which I doubt, but not worried about it. So I'm loving El Capitan today and can hardly believe how well my computer is working.

Just finished installing about 15 minutes ago. Smooth process. took about 30 minutes. Works great.

The joys of being in Australia......tried to download last night, got max of about 50kb/s. Checked my download speed from speednet, got 30mb+, so its not my internet....assumed it was the apple servers getting smashed. Woke up this morning (2 hours ago), clicked on "resume" and its stuck on "waiting".

Suggestions?

Just wait?

The safari is looking REALLY good. Might make the jump from fire fox finally. The pinned tabs could replace my bookmarks bar in fire fox.....

I heavily use iWork '09 and I upgraded to El Cap last night. Yes, I heavily use the Page Layout capabilities of Pages '09. It displayed the layout correctly under El Cap. However, the crayon tab of the color chooser is a bit wonky. It starts out looking like colored pencils, but then if another tab in the color chooser is selected, when you go back to the crayon tab, the window is blank.

This might be fixed in the future. There may be some other issues that have yet to appear. But at this point in time I wouldn't recommend upgrading to El Cap yet for those who heavily rely on iWork 09.

It doesn't make sense because OS X is a brand, the name of the operating system. It's not really a number. It would be like Microsoft deciding to arbitrarily rename Windows, to Doors or something.

--Eric

Not a good comparison. "OS X" used to be a number. It only became a brand later once they removed Mac from Mac OS X. OS X (10) came after OS 9 which came after OS 8 and so on. Naming it OS XI (11) does make sense to progress numerically up the figurative ladder.

Funny thing how they keep stating how stable it is however I've been getting numerous e-mails from Native Instrument, Steinberg, Slate Digital, and Gobbler all advising the same thing: NOT TO UPGRADE. At least not at this moment until all the bugs and fixed and patched. So unfortunately I won't be upgrading for a while until I know without a doubt I won't have any issues having Logic Pro X trying to authorize my AU plugins and VIs and have it freeze up or crash. Just a heads up for all music producers, composers, etc.

I hear you. But companies like Steinberg, NI, etc. are notoriously slow in refactoring their products for new OSXes. It's shameful. I mean, how long has El Capitan been available to developers? It's like they're run by accountants and don't actually keep any development staff around until a major revenue bug needs fixing. Another example: Retina compatibility. In January, I bought what at the time was the latest and greatest Cubase. Still not Retina optimized. Come on, guys. I haven't used it since, so it may be fixed now.

THANK YOU so much for this input. Do the other color chooser options work fine (this "bug" is tied only to the crayons tab?) or is the whole color choose pane failing you?

If you notice anything else of consequence could you please either PM me or reply again. I could probably live with the crayon option if the rest of Page Layout works well. But where there's one bug...

Again, thanks for replying. It's very helpful.

Up and running and so far it's going great. The performance is very good on Safari. A few stutters here and there but it seems to be improving. Notes is awesome and more than expected. Just got rid of Evernote...

Happy to help. There's only a few of us left who still rely on iWork '09 so we gotta help one another out. :)

All other color chooser tabs work fine. I agree regarding "where there's one bug.." that is why I'm encouraging caution.
