What's the status on TRIM in OS X? I've been reading news back and forth, some state it's unnecessary (something about the way HFS+ handles garbage collecting on SandForce SSD's) and some state it's beneficial.

I've got an OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G 256GB SSD in one of my optical bays on my 12-Core Mac Pro. I believe as it's a SandForce driven SSD so it wouldn't benefit from TRIM in OS X (?)

Thanks! :)

TRIM still might not play nice with Sandforce drives in OS X.

The present scripts do not re-enable TRIM. Strings changed, and MD5 fails, etc.

Are you sure?

I updated to 10.8.3 then ran TRIM enabler, set TRIM to on and rebooted and it appears to be working fine for me.

So if I already have Windows 8 installed, I should download the new boot camp drivers? I'm currently running W8 just fine without any drivers whatsoever, because I did install the W7 drivers and they totally screwed up the system.

Finally some movement on that front. Hopefully 10.9 finishes the job.

This update would fall in line with the 10.6.x update and Graphics update that Apple released for Snow Leopard as they worked to overhaul things with 3.2 support in Lion.

Hopefully the fact that 4.x is an evolution of 3.2 will make the transition easier and happen sooner for Apple, compared to the complete overhaul that was necessary to go from 2.1 to 3.2.

anybody noticing any difference in scrolling performance in safari?

I personally dont particularly on facebook on 13 inch RBMP

external monitor contrast issues has been fixed

Ah ok thanks mate! I'm not playing with fire, if it ain't broke ;)

I know I can Google it, but I'm crazy lazy right now (trainer kicked my butt!), but what is the benefit to TRIM in OS X? (and why does it not play nice with SandForce controllers?)

Thanks!

I'm much rather dual boot to Ubuntu than Windows 8. I'd like to try out Ubuntu. But as far as I can tell, there's no easy way to do that. :(

Dude its so easy!
You can just follow the basic bootcamp documentation, and just use a Ubuntu, instead of windows.

Just run the "Mac" version of Ubuntu.

This will make your Mac Eject key work and sound/backlight.

Please PM me if you have any additional questions.

Enough forum jacking....

Does UEFI Booting work on 10.8.3? I am really, really curious....

That's what I keep saying, but there are some function keys and hotkeys that will work more like you would expect with windows.

Certain drivers needed to be in place, and I believe 3TB drives weren't recognized in Windows 8 on Mac systems (perhaps something to do with the EFI?). I honestly couldn't tell you more, I've been using W7 64-bit Ultimate when I need it, don't see a reason for W8.

Looks like Apple finally fixed the link aggregation problems that plagued previous versions of Mountain Lion. Now my LAG doesn't lose connection to the network between restarts. Huzzah!

its one of my OCDs i cannot sleep knowing the laptop is still on next to my bed. it was even worse on the old mbp because of its "breathing" led

That breathing LED is just a sign that your MBP was getting ready to eat you in the middle of the night.:D:D:D:D:D

CUDA was never functional for you in this machine, as you have an ATI card...

You were using Open CL, but as you see now, it turned out to be incompatible with After Effects. Adobe obviously knows this. Wait for an update and use the CPU while it`s coming. :)

Actually... I'm running a 3rd party PC NVidia GTX 660 Ti on a 12-core Mac Pro and it was running CUDA just lovely prior to 10.8.2. However, 10.8.3 broke the CUDA support until NVidia releases a new CUDA driver..... apparently.

The update is awesome. It is like I bought a new laptop that runs twice as fast as the old one!Amazing work apple! It was well worth the patience.

Who is recommending this? There is no need what so ever to do such a thing if your mac is running correctly at the time you do the update.

Before anyone starts whining about issues with this update. A clean install using a OS X 10.8.3 installer is recommended.

Actually there is on the NVida site, however, that doesn't work either.

This is Apple locking the update to their own software I guess.

CUDA updates have always come from NVidia.... was just surprised that NVidia didn't have a newer update to support 10.8.3 since it's been in development for such a lengthy period.

More info here but

TRIM is a command that allows the operating system to inform the SSD controller which files are no longer in use. In other words, when you delete something from the ssd, the operating system does not erase the actual data from the drive, the OS will just mark that space as free space and overwrite the data when needed.

As for why...long story thats further explained here

Installed the update accompanied by the recent firmware update for rMBP, the OS overall feels a little snappier than before. Safari is finally usable again thank god, I can view gifs and scroll without it flipping out!

I saw in a number of posts that 10.8.3 would fix wake on lan issues. I am very disappointed to report that it did not fix it. Once the iMac goes to sleep there is no file sharing or screen sharing from the mac book pro and there is no wifi sync from iOS devices unless you physically go wake the computer up. This just sucks.

I'm doing some fast benches and 10.8.3 is faster than 10.8.2 by a large amount in 3D graphics, 10.8.2 was already the fastest destroying 10.6.8.

I will publish a nice graph tomorrow of in the weekend, meanwhile if someone want to check my old 10.6 vs 10.7 vs 10.8 bench it is here:

PS: if someone have a iMac 27" mid2011, i7 3,4Ghz, 16GB RAM, Radeon HD 6970M 2GB could please contact me to test 10.8.3 on that machine. Thanks!
