Still buggy

I have no idea what Apple is doing these days, Lion was buggy as hell they never fixed it then they release ML, it has always locked up my MBP, took it to to the apple store and they said it was all good, seems to be related to Safari, anyway after the latest update I tried it again with Safari and it locked up solid after about 40 minutes of surfing, went back to FF and seems to be ok so far.....I would still be using Snow Leopard but I need iPhoto and some other features, I cant get Snow Leopard to do anything weird no matter how hard I try

Getting bootcamp drivers to work on "non supported" Macs

Hi all,

After just reading in the MacRumors forums for a while I thought is was time to share my experiences with Bootcamp en Windows 8.

Background
I am a Microsoft SQL Server developer and have been using my 2009 Macbook Pro and mid 2011 MacMini for this purpose. I do not run OSX on my machines but just Windows including the Bootcamp drivers. For me this represents the best of two worlds: Apples exquisite hardware combined with the very good Windows 7 and 8 OS.
I have been running Windows 7 for years with no problems and last december made the switch to running Windows Server 2012 as my main OS. This is the server version of Windows 8 and very similar "under the hood".

Setup
As said I run just Windows. I simply format my whole HDD (with MBR) using an OSX install on an external HDD of USB stick and then install Windows. After that I install bootcamp. So far I have been using the Windows 7 BC 4.0 version with Windows Server 2012 and this worked fine. The only glitches it had were the non-present on screen display while changing the volume, screen brightness and keyboard backlight brightness. All the rest worked fine (well besides Bluetooth but that is because Microsoft in his wisdom decided that a server OS does not need BT support).

OSX 10.8.3
I was very eager to try this out as it annoyed me quite a bit that the OSD for the above settings worked just fine in W7 but not in W8. But then I read that my 2009 MBP was not supported... And indeed, after unzipping the BC 5.0 package and running setup I got a message saying:

BC_NotWorking.PNG

Bummer. So I decided to digg in a bit deeper and went to the folder:

..\BootCamp\Drivers\Apple

And started bootcamp.msi. And voila:

BC_RunsFine.PNG

Bootcamp 5 installed just fine on my "non-supported" 2009 MBP! In order to make it run you have to start it using Administrative privileges in Windows 8

After installing all still worked just fine and yes, I do now have OSD for volume and screen brightness controll!

But still not for keyboard backlight... but I guess Apple just left something to be desired for OSX 10.9 ;)

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Erik

EDIT
When a cloud passed the sun a few minutes ago, I noticed that the OSD for keyboard backlight was working as it should! It apparently only starts when the surrounding area gets darker. Never noticed this behaviour on Windows 7 though...

I've had a bit more work but managed to get everything to work on my mid-2010 13".

  1. Create a partition on Disk Utility, formatted as FAT.
  2. Boot from the Windows 8 install disk (I have the upgrade version, got it for 15€ :D )
  3. Install Win8 to the partition created in step 1.
  4. After install, go online and download and install the latest NVIDIA drivers for the 320M.
  5. Download the latest Bootcamp drivers as well as the third-to-last (version number 4.0.4326).
  6. Open the Start Screen, type cmd, right-click, run as administrator.
  7. On the command prompt, cd to the Apple folder inside the latest drivers.
  8. Type
    Code:
    msiexec -i Bootcamp.msi
    and press Enter.
  9. Bootcamp should now install normally.
  10. Finally, go to the 4.0.4326 bootcamp drivers, NVIDIA, NVidiaChipset64, SMBUS, right-click on the .inf file and select install. Repeat for the .inf on the SMU folder.

With this everything works. Only two things I noticed were the brightness uses MS's own display icon and the machine freezes after 15min, for some reason.

Can anyone please check Google News (http://news.google.com/nwshp?hl=en&tab=wn), mine's missing most of the thumbnail images after updating.

I just checked the link you provided , all worked , except I was prompted to refresh the page. However all the thumb nail pic`s were there , just not my personal Google info , that was the only reason I had to refresh.

What is your connection speed ?

My average is about 24 MPS , maybe yours is less maybe more , I say try again , speed is not a constant. I have seen as high as 27.5 and as low as 10.

Good luck __ O are you signed in with Google ?

Later , :)

I forgot to mention that after the BC update I had to update my Nvidia drivers too. I just ran "update drivers" under device management which completed in under a second. Rebooted and all was fine.

Grumble.

Once again the last update that broke apache requiring me to fix it manually broke it again but this time my fix isn't working.

Even the aftermarket solution I found to fix what Apple decided to break isn't working.

Makes me want to go back to Snow Leopard. The rest of it seems decent though.

Update:

The solutions here that worked in each successive update to 10.8x do not work now:

If anyone has any ideas I'd like to hear some. The error I'm getting appears to be permission related so it almost appears that 10.83 incorrectly edited the permissions on 700+ files relating to my webserver.

Anyone else experiencing incredibly slow load/response times with the new version of Safari that was including with this update? Let me know! :)

I had a big expectations for that update, but on my retina, switching between spaces, when for instance clicking on the dock icon of a program that is in different space, is kind of laggy as well.

hate it.

i forgot to update my sig

My most used icon of all time on all forums on the net [ :D "Big Grin" ] icon isn't working for me anymore..... Apple please fix major issues :apple: users encounter upgrading their BootCamp drivers for their so beloved Windows 7/8 X64 in the next 10.8.4 update!

Let us all enjoy our Macs' BootCamp, in a way it was invented for!

Just my 2c!

I mentioned the Nvidia drivers first because I read somewhere that the ones on the bootcamp package caused BSODs during the install, and surely enough, they did for me.

The Nvidia drivers in the BC WindowsSupport package are allways outdated!

Yes, also for me it was a case of lessons learnt after the full package setup.exe excecution.

That's why I, with the BC Windows 7 support drivers previously, used the seperate drivers within the package to install them hand-picked and one at the time!

Still waiting for the info about eventual AHCI drivers for ODD sata bootup support! Anybody that can provide me that information?

Thanks for reading/reply. ;-)

I know they're outdated, but to actually cause a BSOD while installing is a bit too much.

I tried the individual install, but that way I didn't manage to get the overlays for keyboard and audio, as well as the bootcamp options panel.

Does anyone have any clues as to why Win8 freezes completely after about 15min of use, by the way? That one left me clueless.

No clue.

Probably a driver issue, though. I always run the updates when I first install, and it always updates my video driver. You might try the same.

Why can Nvidia make a full install driver package with the [pre-hit-the-oke-to-install-button] option to select the drivers to be installed by just showing what driver version you have and what version is in the package! Providing users a choise is good & very needed customer service and user benefit!

Again just my 2c. This thread is costing me some serious money! ;-)

Cheers.

This time Safari is really much snappier especially on facebook and other websites when zoomed in, on the Retina MacBook Pro 15".

I'm getting choppy Mission Control animation on a MBP mid 2010 13". Any way to fix this?

(already tried Pram and SMC reset)

As soon as you access it or all the time?

It happens all the time, especially with 3 or more windows. But its not like choppy as in choppy then smooth then choppy. What I really mean by choppy is the frame rate of the animation is low, not even close to what it used to be in Snow Leopard.

Since the update, has anyone had any success creating a bootable USB Installer of 10.8.3 from the App Store? I have downloaded it probably 5 times now, and every time the installesd.dmg disk image is corrupt and will not mount, giving me "invalid checksum". I imagine it has something to do with the fact that the package is only downloading 4.44 GB worth of data, and the size of the 10.8.2 install package was always around 4.75 GB, so "something" is not downloading.
