What's better again in ML? I have no problems with Lion...and please don't come with iOS crap. Other than AirPlay Mirroring (for limited things) and decreased Radeon performance, what else is there? Virtually nothing.

The best thing about Mountain Lion is not the features, but the SPEED, STABILITY and BUG SQUASHES.

That said, I found a really NEAT feature when trying to use screen sharing with an iMac at work -- it asked gave me the option of connecting to the iMac SIMULTANEOUSLY as my co-worker was using it. YEP -- basically I was browsing and using the computer while she did -- two different desktops. Wicked. It didn't work on my mac mini at home though -- perhaps requires a minimum i3 processor... now if only I could find out what that darned feature is called!! It sure wasn't advertised!!

Microsoft is bound legally to support their software for 'x' number of years...whereas Apple doesn't have that restriction.

Well, nothing out of the ordinary. Microsoft stopped providing updates for Windows XP after 8 years, 8 months, and 18 days (07/13/10). I doubt that Apple has the same record here. Okay, granted, there are more security issues with XP but that is in part due to the widespread adoption. If MacOS would be that widespread, hackers would rather try to attack that. But actually, the emergency updates for malware weren't stopped back then, it was only the support.

Legally bound to whom ? Microsoft chooses to establish its support contracts however it likes. It chose the LTS route because that's what enterprise IT likes, keeps migrations to a minimum.

If Apple updates Boot Camp drivers for your 2007 to be compatible with Windows 8. I somehow don't see that happening.

You assume that Windows 8 will require a different set of drivers. I don't think that's a such a sure thing.

Frankly, anyone who has the option to dump an OS as bad as Lion and doesn't take it, is a fool in my book.

I'm writing this from Mountain Lion, and I can confirm that it's without a doubt more sophisticated and smoother than Lion, but really, I've never had any serious problems with Lion, and I always loved it (MBA 13" 2011).

So people who have no choice but to stick with Lion, no worries. :))

Yeah, I agree, there are indeed a lot of small but noticeable improvements. Just to pick an example, wake up from sleep never worked too good in Lion, sometimes you had to wait a couple of seconds until you could type in your password. I'm sure you guys know what I mean :) This is fixed in ML, wake up works instantly (with MBA), as if it was an iPhone or iPad.

And there are tons of other changes like this. Again, I've never had any serious problems with Lion, I always loved it. Lion was really good in my opinion, ML is perfect (to me at least).

Theoretically yes. But in practice it almost never works well. Just look at how many early reviewers of Windows 8 have problems with getting Windows 7 drivers to work. For example, it is not uncommon for driver installers to check for OS version and bail out if it is not what it expects.

We are still on the same driver set from the Vista era. Though Microsoft has made improvements in the WDDM. Intel, nVidia, and AMD have released targeted drivers for Windows 8 but the '7' ones worked just fine before that.

What century are you in? Otherwise you might be complaining that Windows 8 is 6.2.xxxx up from 6.1.xxxx.

I'd hardly call that any standard worth noting, I would expect any major company to continue their support for a software product beyond one year.

Microsoft is still supporting XP since its release 10 years ago. I'd like to see Apple show that kind of dedication to their customers.

Do you own a PC? My 2003 PC runs Windows 7 with no problems. And even if that would become a problem, it's a PC for heaven's sake, I can upgrade it. Yea, I know, that is that nasty word Apple doesn't like. Actually, that reminds me: Wanted to buy a 256GB Vertex 4 from OCZ. Yea, I don't have to look if it works. It will - its a PC. Around Christmas, I will probably invest in a new graphics card. Doesn't matter which - yes you guessed it - it's a PC and it works with all of them. No Pentalobe screws. No "warranty void." And it works even with Windows 95 if I want it to - without emulation. Though, I'd rather stay with Windows 8.

Don't get me wrong - Apple computers are cool. They have cool features. But there also costs to that (and not only the $$$ you pay extra for the looks) which are limited upgrades, outdated hardware 3 months after "refresh," hard or impossible to upgrade...

...in other words: You might have mistaken computers with handsets. It's not an Android.

My mistake was, as you mention, the upgrading aspect. My understanding is that many PC owners are not capable of upgrading their computers (because they lack the know-how, not because their computer can't be upgraded.)

I guess I should mention that I swapped out my 1 GB RAM with 3 GB RAM a few years ago... also the original 256 GB HD with a 1 TB HD, also a few years ago. No other upgrades have been performed.

Doesn't ML have a nice speed bump over Lion?

(I've only heard this, my early 08 MacBook isn't compatible with an update)

Ever tried Snow Leopard?
But I have to admit, the worst OS X is light years ahead of the best Windows.

Ok here's the thing... they brought out leopard, dropped dev on leopard BEFORE it was truly complete to work on the iPad stuff....

After that they came back to OS and finished Leopard off making it Snow Leopard.... Sounds the same to me the way they are going about Lion/MLion...

( On a different note....I still run SL on my 17" behemoth alu mac... and tbh never had an issue with it.. still purrs (no pun intended), and still is used at home. Only bout a uMBP 15" to make life a little easier for carrying it around to client sites and work etc.....)

The feedback posted around here is mixed at best...I am not convinced at all, even when it comes to a "speedier" ML - not to mention that Lion for me is already blazing fast.

Really? I thought Lion slowed my computer down massively following Snow Leopard.

Snow Leopard was amazing in getting rid of peripheral junk. Lion brought all of that right back.

Lion slowed a lot of things down, compared to SL. But ML is a huge upgrade. And anyone who has SL and is able to jump the Lion upgrade and go straight to ML. Its worth the jump and all the upgrades IMO.

"Mixed"? Who has posted that ML isn't at least as fast as Lion? The response I've seen has been very one sided when it comes to responsiveness, many many people have seen a big improvement.

Can I just ask -
What is the point in charging £13/$20 for a operating system, it's so low you might as well just factor in the cost to new hardware prices?

Would be a USP for apple ' operating system and future releases are free*

*some caveat re future tech specs / for 3 years after purchase (included with AppleCare 3year warranty)

I sense ML is another SL? Ie reliable and solid ? Think I may upgrade my mp to ML (s*its n giggles n all)

Any issues with QuickTime pro 7 ? Adobe master collection cs5 and fcp7 ?

Looks like its best to upgrade once every Two years as they seem to need a year to sort out the Os (I downgraded lion to SL after some unreliable buggy time spent with it)

You are both wrong. Mac users can buy ONLY Mountain Lion. Lion has been removed. And "One more thing" ONLY same Mac users can upgrade - some are just told you are not Mac user anymore, if you want to be one buy new Macintosh.

That's not accurate. You can download the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant and use it to create a boot disk of Lion, and it's free. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433

A LOT of people have posted that ML has actually slowed their system down compared to Lion or SL - aren't you reading these forums?

Uh... why? I can't think of a less-deserving OS... Lion is basically a crappy version of Mountain Lion, which in my opinion sucks to begin with.

The last real Mac OS Apple released was 10.6... and even that was starting to feel un-Mac OS like; Tiger was the last true version of OS X that stayed true to the original vision. Although Leopard was fine, too.

I'm sure he has.. but I shudder to ask if he'd tried anything older than intel versions of Tiger.. much less Mac OS 9 or System 7.
But I have to admit, the worst OS X is light years ahead of the best Windows.

This is also true.
