Has the 15" always been exactly 1.0" thick? I seem to remember that being the case for the 17", but I always thought the 15" used to be 1.1" thick. I tried looking for the older tech specs but I couldn't find them.

i know these updates are usually not all that, so my expectations were low,

and im really chuffed at the update i been waitin 3 months for,

i get double vram, .2ghz extra speed and extra power for logic 8.. i get 80gb more hd space...led screen...hope the yellow probs have gone...i get multitouch.....and leopard

im very happpy

only downer is 3gb L2

can some one tell me if i buy 2 x 2gb stix memory, will it only use 3gb of it?

if so, should i buy 1 x 2gb mem to add to 1gb apple stick, or is it better to run equal 2gb stix??

PLEASE SOMEONE ANSWER THIS IMPORTANT QUESTION

sorry for the caps

thanks in advance

That's 3 Mb of L2 cache if you buy the 2.4 Ghz model, twice that for the higher ones.

Windows only addresses 3 Gb of RAM even if you install 4, but OSX on the MBP will use all 4 Gbs if installed.

Only use identical modules with DDR2, or you will likely have all sorts of kernel panics hitting you at random intervals.

Speed Bump: yes
Updated Graphics: yes (although the spanish store doesn't reflect it)
Magnetic latch: no
Upgraded keyboard: no
Multitouchpad©: yes

Nice if you were in the market, but meh if you already own one. I'm happy I got one last summer.

Please help a Newbie, and be kind

Hoping for a helpful and gentle response to what will seem some very dumb questions from a Mac newbie. I'm a lifelong Windows user who has been waiting since October to make the :apple: switch, reading this forum faithfully in anticipation of finally getting my first MBP once the revision/refresher date at long last arrived. But a few things my inexperience and unfamiliarity leave me wondering:

1) Since much of my professional writing work involves editors/publications that prefer Windows-based .txt, .doc or .rtf files, I believe I need to purchase Office 2008 for Mac, correct?

2) Our family video camera is a JVC Everio HDD that records in MPEG-2 format. I've heard there are compatibility issues between this camcorder and a Mac, so does that mean I need to shell out the whole $499 for the Special Media Edition of Office 2008, or would I be fine with the basic Office 08 and simply use the bundled iMovie software to manage and edit home video?

3) I am a wireless internet neophyte, having never used a G3 card. Where do you get one (Apple, local AT&T store?), and is it a monthy service fee or do you pay simply based on usage? I have wireless internet set up at home and I know the built-in receiver on the MPB will work fine there, but I simply don't know the basics of what I'll need for remote use (I KNOW this sounds stupid and basic to everyone, but I just haven't had remote needs until now).

4) Will I encounter any issues moving data from my old Dell laptop to my new MBP if I was just planning to migrate stuff 5 GB at a time using a USB-connecting external drive? Will photos, files, documents convert automatically to usable formats in my new MBP or is it not that simple?

5) Is there any easy way to transfer my iTunes library off our home PC and onto my new MBP in one fell swoop, or am I in for a time-consuming transfer via the aforementioned 5GB USB-connecting external driver (or bigger external drive if I buy one to save time)?

I realize this is sub-basic stuff to many of you, but any knowledgable answers would be very much appreciated. I promise I will catch on as fast as possible to the glory of :apple: with just a little help. Thanks.

Still no redesign. FAIL!

I can't believe that we're in 2008 and the MBP still doesn't have a magnetic latch. I was assuming it would get a MBA keyboard as well.

Maybe in June, at the WWDC, we'll see a redesign? They usually use that to introduce new products, right? Me, I've been waiting for a year and a half for Apple to redesign that MacBook Pro. I'm as surprised as anyone that they still haven't touched the design since January 2003. Oh well, what's another four months? :)

so with the new updates in the BTO options comes an apple remote for order option?
I noticed the apple remote now costs $15, whereas it was included before.

OK now a couple of question

(1) How's the heat? My first gen. MBP actually burns my skin if i am not careful. Has there been success in dissipating all that heat coming from that little monster?
(2) Why, if any did they remove the apple from the command key? They just felt like it? lol
(3) I noticed the keyboard back light in blue now. Do you guys think it will look nicer than the silver/white?

check out the gallery... seems they did change them on the MBP..

gallery-big-07.jpg

edit: i should have read better :p

**** they removed all teh buttons I use like 100 times a day (keyboard light, expose) and they freaking moved the volume away from my left index where it belongs when working, hope its all user config or i'll kill

Exciting, but when are they going to replace 15 inch display. 1440x900 "circuit city" resolution is tiresome.

Yes

I am really not sure if it will not work. But i what i do know is that Sony has always been the main problem when it comes to compatibility software with Apple. Give it a shot, if it doesn't work. I am sure something will pop up. And I am sure someone else will respond to this

3) I am a wireless internet neophyte, having never used a G3 card. Where do you get one (Apple, local AT&T store?), and is it a monthy service fee or do you pay simply based on usage? I really don't think you will ever be stucks with a laptop without internet access. But let's say you love the desert or something. yes you can buy a 3G card. probably with a monthly fee (i would assume going to a service provider's store)

4) Will I encounter any issues moving data from my old Dell laptop to my new MBP if I was just planning to migrate stuff 5 GB at a time using a USB-connecting external drive? Will photos, files, documents convert automatically to usable formats in my new MBP or is it not that simple?

Yes. It's a breeze. no problems.

5) Is there any easy way to transfer my iTunes library off our home PC and onto my new MBP in one fell swoop, or am I in for a time-consuming transfer via the aforementioned 5GB USB-connecting external driver (or bigger external drive if I buy one to save time)?

Yes drag your library into itunes icon in the dock.

Nobody has one of these yet AFAIK, perhaps waiting until they are delivered would get a viable answer.

(2) Why, if any did they remove the apple from the command key? They just felt like it? lol

Sad that it is gone but the image samples conflict each other as some show the apple and some don't.

(3) I noticed the keyboard back light in blue now. Do you guys think it will look nicer than the silver/white?

That is a matter of opinion. Do you like blue or white better? Though I don't really see any images that indicate a color change.

1) I have Office 2008 for Mac as well as iWork '08. Both are ok. Personally I think Office 2007 for Windows is better. Just one reason why I run Windows in VMWare on my Mac.

2) Use iLife. All the apps are integrated with each other which makes creating slideshows or a home movie incredibly easy (a caveman could do it. LOL).

3) I think Verizon has one. I'm not 100% sure though. I just use WiFi wherever I'm at. Haven't ran into too many situations where I haven't been able to find free internet.

4) Moving files will be easier if you have all your data on an external hard drive that has a FireWire port. USB is still good. Its just slower. But most of your file types (eg. docs, music, video) will be read by you Mac.

5) You will have to transfer your music to your Macs hard drive and just import within iTunes.

a little disappointed there's no magnetic latch. would have been an easy design change.

and charging for the remote?? i just bought a $3200 air and had to buy a remote separately. it's a joke.

I was talking about the 4 or so upgrades since my first gen MBP...has the heating problem improved?
Sad that it is gone but the image samples conflict each other as some show the apple and some don't.

I really do hope they dont change the apple key. It's awesome. And everyone who uses one of these machines KNOWS it's the command key. Like engraving DUH on the keyboard.

That is a matter of opinion. Do you like blue or white better? Though I don't really see any images that indicate a color change.

Yes, it shows a different color. I for one dont mind, even though I dont really like that much change in something I got so used to. But i guess we will get used to this color as well.

Damn. Well, I'm jealous of all the new MBP owners (bought mine last revision), especially of the 256mb STANDARD graphics...oh well. My 2.2ghz model has served me well, and will continue to do so. The rest of you...enjoy.

Not a shabby upgrade at all, just a bit.... meh.

I'll wait till summer and see if something nicer shows up.

Boy we :)apple: users) really whine a lot. :D

Maybe because apple has been making lame laptops for 6yrs now. Ugly as hell, not sexy, old looking. We have a right to bitch and apple better start listening cause I aint buying until I get a case redesign. I am not alone either. If you want to be a sucker and buy old junk for TOP dollar go ahead.

Well clearly they're doing something right if they're continuing to use the same design. Many people out there, including myself, love the aluminum enclosure. It's sleek, regardless of how long they've been using it, and it's still unlike any other manufacturer's laptop out there. Funny how you would make a statement like "Apple's been making lame laptops...", yet you bought the cheapest, most "plasticky" desktop Apple makes, the Mac Mini. The one that people say is so low-end that it should be discontinued.

I recommend you think about what you say before you say it. And yes, some of us can afford to spend "TOP dollar" on a computer because we respect the operating system over the alternative. It's not an issue for everybody.

Can you give me the website you used to jailbreak with 1.1.3? still stuck with 1.1.1. thanks

Eew, yeah, that sucks... to most people it might seem minor, but it irritates me that they would move the volume from one side to the other... it's been on the left hand side for as long as I can remember :/ blech.

thanks

Appler and asdavis10, thanks very much for the helpful answers. So there really is such thing as "free internet" without a G3 card attachment if I was to simply pop open my new MBP at a coffee shop or library? I just assumed that sounded too good to be true.

God, I realize this makes me sound like a dinosaur. But until recently I've worked mostly from home on a Dell XP with Ethernet connection and still on dial-up from some assignment venues. The wait for this update has been agonizingly long but now I can finally join the 21st Century!

Wait was worthwhile.

The high specced 15" SR MBP has now become the entry level Penryn MBP.

For us who don't have a laptop in the first place, patience has paid off.

What is the main reason people are complaining?

Case: Old, but even a newb like me didn't expect a change.
BluRay: Even more unlikely?
HardDisk: Get the WD 320GB (a few good threads from 2 days ago are around)
Magnetic Latch: Well yea maybe 1 disappointment.
GPU: 256 and 512 still an update of some sort?

What else?
Seems like a pretty realistic update to me, unless the complaints are sarcastic...

p.s. I can finally use my 4GB ram / MBP sleeve/bag / Laptop cooler...

1) Office for Mac is nice, but you can also install Windows via Bootcamp and use your current version. In all seriousness if you are a writer, stick with the Mac version. It will enhance your creative flow.

2) iMovie is a dedicated video app. Office isn't. If you're undecided about which version of Office to buy you can get by on your windows version (see first point) till you've worked out whether your needs are answered by iMovie.

3) Don't know.

4) You should be able to connect both machines via your wireless network and transfer files direct. The file types are platform-independent. Before transferring photos to iPhoto, check the iPhoto preferences to ensure that colour profiles are automatically inserted. I'm fairly sure this is on by default now. The profile insertion will make a big difference to the colour integrity of your shots.

5) You may find once your machines can see each other that iTunes will see your other library and you can then import it. Just make sure iTunes is up on both machines and that you have enabled you PC library to be shared.

Remote Control

Personally I couldn't care less about the remote - I have literally never used it, and it is still in the sealed packet.

Do I hear bidding starting at $17? ;)
