Nice to have an update....but

I really like the design of the Macbook Pro. I think that most people out there were not asking for much...a magnetic latch, the new keyboard and a slightly bigger multi touch track pad would have done the job. But thanks for the 17" LED...very appreciated...Some are expecting an update for June? Do you guys think it's possible or should we jump on this minor update?

Question coming from somebody who could still wait a year to buy a new laptop but also really likes the actual Macbook Pro....tuff decisions!

***Please, no need for comments like: sure, go ahead and wait forever dumb ass stuff because we are not here to bitch on each other but to ask questions and express our point of view on different subjects.

 right back at ya. I'm not one for low end GPUs, nor sealed cases, nor designs that aren't meant for pushing the hardware.

Argue all you want, the gpu's really aren't that low end, and as far as the sealed cases go, what do you expect? it's apple. love 'em or hate 'em, they're constantly going to create designs so that you can't upgrade them (at least, not easily), but instead so that you buy a newer model somewhere down the line.

I've been waiting for this update to make my purchase, but which mac to purchase is my newest question. I'm hoping for some suggestions. I've narrowed it to:

1. updated 2.4 GHz MBP for ~$2000.oo
2. refurb 2.4 GHz MBP for ~$1650.oo
3. refurb 2.2 GHz MB Black for ~$1050.oo

Basically, I'm looking for a laptop that will be primarily used for basic operations (ie, word processing, wireless internet surfing/emailing) as well as a few work related chores such as photoshop editing and powerpoint presentations. Also, enjoy recording music and making music videos for uploading to YouTube, so I want some editing capabilities and a lap top that can handle those jobs fairly easily (Actually, this last item is pretty important in terms of what I want)

So what are your thoughts on which comp is the best buy for me? Also, Here are a few extra specific questions and I'd really appreciate any thoughts, opinions, insight, etc.

1. I read that the MBP wireless wasn't as good as the MB. Do you agree with this, and if so, will the MBP update eliminate this problem?

2. How big of a deal is the LED screen (MBP update) vs the TFT scream (MB and MBP refurb)?

3. How big of a deal is the NVIDIA GeForce (MBPs) vs MB?

4. How important is multitouch? Does it really make editing in photoshop or internet browsing significantly easier?

5. And what about the backlit keyboard vs MB keyboard?

Like I said, any and all thoughts, opinions, etc are appreciated.

Hoping for a helpful and gentle response to what will seem some very dumb questions from a Mac newbie. I'm a lifelong Windows user who has been waiting since October to make the :apple: switch, reading this forum faithfully in anticipation of finally getting my first MBP once the revision/refresher date at long last arrived. But a few things my inexperience and unfamiliarity leave me wondering:

You should have no problems at all migrating over to Mac. If all else fails, don't forget you can run Windows XP or Vista on your new MBP.

here's the deal for all who don't like the remote not being bundled with the MBP. I know lots of people who have all variations of MBP's and do you know how many of them carry the remote around with them? NONE. how many use it on a regular basis? NONE.

So apple, being a forward thinking company, probably doesn't want to waste the materials on all of these remotes. This way if you NEED one, you'll get one. You could say "they should offer it for free" but then everyone would get one anyway.

$20 is nothing if you NEED one and apparently a huge complaining point for those of you who just WANT one.

So if all you haters wanna cry out that apple is cheap.....i'll argue that the consumer who complains is cheap.

Just for the record BluRay is overrated and expensive. I plan on getting a BR drive as soon as an cheaper external slim option becomes available or when I just find it on the web.

Apple isn't waiting for BR to become anything, and the format wars were over before they started. HD content is being streamed over the web and any one that is buying BR discs and watching them at home is lost.

Rent the movies, rent the HD content and stream it. BR is overrated, a day late and a dollar short. The only thing it's good for now is burning 50GB of info on an expensive disc that will take FOREVER TO WRITE TO.

macbook pro keyboard

so they left the same old keyboard for the macbook pro and here i was hoping for addition of macbook air keys. which brings me onto my question can you swap the macbook/macbook air keys into the macbook pro has anyone tried? also who believes their will be a change in case anytime soon?

Any will work fine, but get the cheaper one if you are money-conscious.

Just because you do multiple remotes doesn't mean everyone does. I have never met anyone that has an apple tv, or has purchased an apple remote

True, you definitely have a point. I guess I just see it as a non-issue because I assume that most mac loyalists will already have a remote (from one product or another), or "newbies" who are buying an apple laptop (which, let's be honest, is more expensive than most other brands of laptops) aren't going to mind throwing in that extra $20 on top of their purchase.

But I definitely agree, it is lame that they're not including it... especially considering that it *is* only $20.

Powerbook Comparison??

powerbookej3.png

This is from the performance page of the new MacBook Pro.

can someone explain this image to me? Does this really mean that the new computer is only 3.3 times faster in photoshop than the powerbook g4 that I currently have? am i missing something here?

I would have guessed that the new MacBook Pro is much faster than that.

Wow, this thing was 19 pages when i got into work and 23 pages when i got to the end... I know some of these comments are old, but i would like to chime in anyways. Besides, most people just read the last page

We're paying $500 for 256mb+ of vram?
256MB of ram makes a difference if you use bootcamp for games. It also should make some difference when doing G-Card intensive tasks. Really the bonus is double the cache. 6mb instead of 3mb. I would think that bandwidth is a big upgrade. I do wish it included some sort of up-res of the monitor for $500, but i think this is the sweet spot of the new MBP

so when will the next update be?
Rumor is June-ish. That is next on intel's roadmap. This would mean that this update is more to hold us over until then. It should do that no-prob.

The trackpad looks the same as our current MacBookPro.
Is this upgradable by software perhaps?
No there is an extra controller inside. you can find dissected MBA pictures.

Let whine-fest begin...
Case design would have been nice.

Wow, 100mhz more and 256mb of V-RAM I'd never use!
This might not be the machine for you. Since, you bought recently then this makes more sense. Since you are attempting to pee on other peoples fires, i shall pee on yours. You machine is not as fast as these. That 100mhz is the difference between 4mb and 6mb, as well as some other cool features on penryrn 45nm = less power/more battery, 6mb of cache, C6 and EDAT tech. If you dont know what C6 or EDAT are, google it. SSE4 is sweet too.

The 2.4 looks like the sweet deal here. Interesting.
i would beg to differ.

No mag latch
No higher res screens
...
No price drop
No new GFX card (not that one was really available)
I'm with you part way. I would have loved to see a 9500 in these babies, even at 256mb 128-256 didnt make a huge difference on barefeats.com's test, i doubt 256 more would make a tremendous difference over 256, but we will need to wait and see.
also, I would love to get 1080p full screen on a MBP 15" I dont want the size of a 17".
Price drop would have been my solution on these babies, since there were minor enhancements. Though it is hard to raise the price once you lower it.

in deference of course to my current powerbook G4 1.25 GHz - a machine that has lasted me almost 4.5 years and still not only gets productive work done, but goes on stage with me every gig without a hiccup. A great, reliable computer. Just not exactly fast anymore!.
I have a PB G4 1.67 Hi-res and We just got my wife a MB in Jan. I think i can wait 6 more months, but that will remain to be seen. The refurbs are smoking deals and always have a good resale. I think one thing people forget about Mac's prices is that you get amazing resale. I sold my wifes 1.33 for $500 and my buddy sold his 1.67 hi-res the same week for $750 (I knew i shouldn't have allowed buy it now). Anyways. If i get 500-750 for my powerbook, then my upgrade was effectively 1250. Who in their right mind wouldn't make that kind of an upgrade? Good job apple!

A very boring update...
No surprises, that much is true. Very standard update.

kind of cause I just snagged this on refurb shop (only thing missing is trackpad thingy!(obviously not what I was waiting for))
You do inspire me sir.

No magnetic latch?
I am surprised that this is such a big deal to people. It is cool, no moving parts, but is it as big of a deal as people make it? I would imagine

Exactly. In a laptop, 200 GB is plenty when you can easily buy an external drive and store all your space occupying videos which you watch only once in a while. And I would definitely buy a 200GB 7200 rpm than a 250GB 5400 rpm (and much worse the 4200 rpm one). HDD is the bottleneck today in today's computer components.
Your statements are self-refuting. I personally rarely use an optical drive on my portables and would love the option to put in another 200GB 7200RPM drive instead. I would then RAID them (reliability isn't an issue with backups). I know that there is a company that makes a kit to do this and I will seriously consider this kit when i sell my PB. If HDD is the bottleneck, why would you not want 2 drives/more space? Also, I do not want to carry around an external when i am shooting photos, it is enough to carry a 15" computer. It is awkward to have a cable and a drive dangling when i am out of the house or when i want to move around the house. Maybe I'm spoiled for living in the OC and most people dont go outside to watch the ocean.

I agree... I would sacrifice an tenth of an inch on the case or a complete redesigen for more hardware options. I will be waiting forever for my dual HD, and Dual 2.8GHz processor MacBook Pro.

And I am sure that many users would love to spec DOWN the low end to dual 2.1 or 2.2GHz chips to shave off $250-$300.

I agree.... Apple is failing with the design of the MacBook Pro. I would have loved to see the MB keyboard in this model only if they redesigned the entire case and added more ports etc. The magnetic latch should have been in this revision, but I am glad that we at least got MT.
You're an innovative thinker and I think Apple should hire you. With your ideas they will sell more computers. I know that some of your ideas would blur the line between pro and consumer, but that is what pro-sumer is all about and Canon and Nikon have already smudged all over that.

The magnetic latch has moving parts... a little magnetic piece of metal flips down and holds the lid closed... its flimsy at best, yet has never once failed in my 4+ yr old 12" Powerbook....
they failed a lot in the past, there was a tsb on a lot of powerbooks because of this. look it up.

How big a difference will one see between the 2.5 and 2.6 processor?

Would it be better to go for the 2.6 and 4 Gigs of Ram and be done with it or will I be ok with the 2.5 and 4 gigs.

Is it better to just to buy the RAM and install it yourself or have Apple do it? Does it affect your warranty or anything like that if you use approved RAM.

If that is the case where is the bets place to get it, what brand?
I think 2.5 is not much difference because you get the 6mb of cache.
Buy your ram from macsales.com or crucial.com whoever is cheaper. Both are great rams.
Doesn't affect warranty and it is easy. For a guide, check out ifixit.com

Pretty pumped over here.

Now:-------------------------Soon:
PowerBook--------------------MacBook Pro
G4 1.67GHz 512KB L2 Cache---C2D 2.5GHz 6MB L2 Cache
167MHz FSB------------------800MHz FSB
10.5--------------------------10.5
1.5GB-------------------------2GB
100GB @ 7200RPM-------------200GB @ 7200 RPM
15 inch 1440x960--------------15 inch @ 1440x900
ATI 9700 128MB---------------NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 512MB
POS Power Connector---------Magsafe Power Connector

I am still not pumped that it is soo hard to change out the hard drive. My wife's MB HD is easy as ram to install.
The biggest difference besides Proc, has to be Graphics.
Also, your FSB is off, but at least you made the comparison comparably off.
I would have posted Max Specs on RAM, since that is where you will see a tremendous gain. Also, HDD SATA v. PATA should make a difference

Finished this post 1.5hrs after starting it... some people have to work. Sorry if this has been answered

I'm a little disappointed to see that there is no redesign of either the MBP or MB. Personally I think the white MB needs to be taken out in back a put down. A magnetic latch on the MBP would have been nice. As well as maybe a darker gray outer cover or maybe even a black aluminum case with a black backlit keyboard. Maybe just something totally new in design since the performance upgrades are, in my opinion, marginal. Penryn, LED, video card, larger HD are all nice, but your only going to see marginal performance improvements. Maybe when some benchmarks come out I will be proven wrong. But from what I understand, Penryn is just a minor upgrade from the current dual core processors. The best upgrade to me was the 6mb cache. Thats a real upgrade to me. The multi-touch trackpad is a nice addition also. Not a big enough one to make me a new MBP. I'll stick with my MBA for my multi-touch needs. The worst change in the MB and MBP are the rearranging of the function keys. But I guess thats just a minor gripe. And as for everyone complaining about no Blu-Ray, keep in mind that Apple is trying to sell media wirelessly. HD DVD may be dead but a new war is brewing. I guess for all those waiting on these upgrades are happy. I'll just wait for the next totally redesigned MBP before I upgrade.

Help for you-

1) Since much of my professional writing work involves editors/publications that prefer Windows-based .txt, .doc or .rtf files, I believe I need to purchase Office 2008 for Mac, correct?

2) Our family video camera is a JVC Everio HDD that records in MPEG-2 format.

3) I am a wireless internet neophyte, having never used a G3 card.

4) Will I encounter any issues moving data

5) Is there any easy way to transfer my iTunes library off our home PC and onto my new MBP

Welcome to your new MBP. Don't let people in here scare you. More than a couple inferiority complexes exist here. So, I'll hit a couple of you questions, hopefully make it easier for you.

1. I use Office for all my documents. there will be people in here to suggest other software. I find it pretty easy to share with people in the PC world, since almost all of them are on Office. I would just go basic.

2. I've heard of the issues with MPEG-2, and I think there are some converters and work-arounds. I'm sure with a search or two of that will produce the needed action. I wouldn't use this as a reason to spend the extra $$ on the upscale version of Office.

3. Not familiar with the G3 card. Sorry. My Mac works fine wherever there is a signal. The built-in wireless car picks up every available signal.

4. Transferring data is simple. Did it on my girlfriends computer the other night. She finally switched (HAHA!!) All you need is a cat5 cable. Here's the link.

5. There might be simpler ways to move music, but I used Senuti. It will upload all the music on your ipod to your new mac. Then, transfrer your music on your HD to your iTunes library. Then hook up your iPod and reformat it to work with your new MBP. You music will be transfered.

The biggest thing, give yourself some time to do all of this. Its not going to be a 30 minute assignment. Good luck and welcome.

Just ordered my MBP 15inch.

It says "ships in 2-4 days" but when does it actually get to the house?

I didn't read through this thread but:

Looks like the MBP did get a case redesign!!!!! Well, not quite...
however.................

The superdrive is in a different location (the slot). It is higher, more near the top of the palm rest. I assume it's 'cause it looks centered now with the lid closed. Check out the pictures on the www.apple.com/macbookpro site.

From what I see, that's the 17" model in which the slot has been on the higher side (more towards the palm rest surface). The 15" model has a more "centered" slot. So that remains the same.
Check:http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/design.html

(which, let's be honest, is more expensive than most other brands of laptops)

NOT really. I will agree that every other PC maker in the world has much more options than Apple, and their portable lineups included 6 or 7 or more machines with varying screen sizes. Apple just has 4 main machines with only 3 screen sizes that are all aimed at the middle of the demographic/market.

If we compare the mid ranged machines from most companies with Apple's there isn't that much of a price difference. I have come to about a $50-$100 difference many times.

p.s. that's without the ever changing PC rebates as well.

I'm happy with the MBP update & I'll be buying one today :)

I'm even happier that I no longer have to trawl through these threads all day long. Finally, I have my life back !!!
Goodbye Macrumors!

~

And now, the end is here,
And so I face, the final curtain.
My friend, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that's full
I traveled each and ev'ry highway
And more, much more than this, I did it ... my ... way
;)

I would have guessed that the new MacBook Pro is much faster than that.

Only 3.3x as fast? Sheesh!

Imagine if the speed limit were only 181 MPH (as opposed to the current 55), and only 99 MPH (30) on the city streets.

Imagine if your 2 hour train ride to work only took 35 minutes ... how sad.

Or flying from LA to Sydney was only 3.3x as fast (3.5-4 hours) ... what would you do with that wasted 8 hours you had left over.

Are these types of comments for real???

also to the argument that we NEED a case redesign every frickin year or so....i bring the same argument. if all these macs were completely redesigned each year there would be so much wasted materials, far more than bundled remotes.

we as consumers need to stop looking at our products as what SHOULD be or COULD be done, but more we should look at what is NEEDED.

im not trying to be this super-environmental opinion but i know that it helps explain some of these decisions a bit.

do remember that Al Gore is on the board over there at apple.

Looking forward to eventually buying my C3Q MBP. 2010 or so.... In the meantime, this is a nice update. :)
