Wow, this thing was 19 pages when i got into work and 23 pages when i got to the end... I know some of these comments are old, but i would like to chime in anyways. Besides, most people just read the last page
We're paying $500 for 256mb+ of vram?
256MB of ram makes a difference if you use bootcamp for games. It also should make some difference when doing G-Card intensive tasks. Really the bonus is double the cache. 6mb instead of 3mb. I would think that bandwidth is a big upgrade. I do wish it included some sort of up-res of the monitor for $500, but i think this is the sweet spot of the new MBP
so when will the next update be?
Rumor is June-ish. That is next on intel's roadmap. This would mean that this update is more to hold us over until then. It should do that no-prob.
The trackpad looks the same as our current MacBookPro.
Is this upgradable by software perhaps?
No there is an extra controller inside. you can find dissected MBA pictures.
Case design would have been nice.
Wow, 100mhz more and 256mb of V-RAM I'd never use!
This might not be the machine for you. Since, you bought recently then this makes more sense. Since you are attempting to pee on other peoples fires, i shall pee on yours. You machine is not as fast as these. That 100mhz is the difference between 4mb and 6mb, as well as some other cool features on penryrn 45nm = less power/more battery, 6mb of cache, C6 and EDAT tech. If you dont know what C6 or EDAT are, google it. SSE4 is sweet too.
The 2.4 looks like the sweet deal here. Interesting.
i would beg to differ.
No mag latch
No higher res screens
...
No price drop
No new GFX card (not that one was really available)
I'm with you part way. I would have loved to see a 9500 in these babies, even at 256mb 128-256 didnt make a huge difference on barefeats.com's test, i doubt 256 more would make a tremendous difference over 256, but we will need to wait and see.
also, I would love to get 1080p full screen on a MBP 15" I dont want the size of a 17".
Price drop would have been my solution on these babies, since there were minor enhancements. Though it is hard to raise the price once you lower it.
in deference of course to my current powerbook G4 1.25 GHz - a machine that has lasted me almost 4.5 years and still not only gets productive work done, but goes on stage with me every gig without a hiccup. A great, reliable computer. Just not exactly fast anymore!.
I have a PB G4 1.67 Hi-res and We just got my wife a MB in Jan. I think i can wait 6 more months, but that will remain to be seen. The refurbs are smoking deals and always have a good resale. I think one thing people forget about Mac's prices is that you get amazing resale. I sold my wifes 1.33 for $500 and my buddy sold his 1.67 hi-res the same week for $750 (I knew i shouldn't have allowed buy it now). Anyways. If i get 500-750 for my powerbook, then my upgrade was effectively 1250. Who in their right mind wouldn't make that kind of an upgrade? Good job apple!
No surprises, that much is true. Very standard update.
kind of cause I just snagged this on refurb shop (only thing missing is trackpad thingy!(obviously not what I was waiting for))
You do inspire me sir.
I am surprised that this is such a big deal to people. It is cool, no moving parts, but is it as big of a deal as people make it? I would imagine
Exactly. In a laptop, 200 GB is plenty when you can easily buy an external drive and store all your space occupying videos which you watch only once in a while. And I would definitely buy a 200GB 7200 rpm than a 250GB 5400 rpm (and much worse the 4200 rpm one). HDD is the bottleneck today in today's computer components.
Your statements are self-refuting. I personally rarely use an optical drive on my portables and would love the option to put in another 200GB 7200RPM drive instead. I would then RAID them (reliability isn't an issue with backups). I know that there is a company that makes a kit to do this and I will seriously consider this kit when i sell my PB. If HDD is the bottleneck, why would you not want 2 drives/more space? Also, I do not want to carry around an external when i am shooting photos, it is enough to carry a 15" computer. It is awkward to have a cable and a drive dangling when i am out of the house or when i want to move around the house. Maybe I'm spoiled for living in the OC and most people dont go outside to watch the ocean.
I agree... I would sacrifice an tenth of an inch on the case or a complete redesigen for more hardware options. I will be waiting forever for my dual HD, and Dual 2.8GHz processor MacBook Pro.
And I am sure that many users would love to spec DOWN the low end to dual 2.1 or 2.2GHz chips to shave off $250-$300.
I agree.... Apple is failing with the design of the MacBook Pro. I would have loved to see the MB keyboard in this model only if they redesigned the entire case and added more ports etc. The magnetic latch should have been in this revision, but I am glad that we at least got MT.
You're an innovative thinker and I think Apple should hire you. With your ideas they will sell more computers. I know that some of your ideas would blur the line between pro and consumer, but that is what pro-sumer is all about and Canon and Nikon have already smudged all over that.
The magnetic latch has moving parts... a little magnetic piece of metal flips down and holds the lid closed... its flimsy at best, yet has never once failed in my 4+ yr old 12" Powerbook....
they failed a lot in the past, there was a tsb on a lot of powerbooks because of this. look it up.
How big a difference will one see between the 2.5 and 2.6 processor?
Would it be better to go for the 2.6 and 4 Gigs of Ram and be done with it or will I be ok with the 2.5 and 4 gigs.
Is it better to just to buy the RAM and install it yourself or have Apple do it? Does it affect your warranty or anything like that if you use approved RAM.
If that is the case where is the bets place to get it, what brand?
I think 2.5 is not much difference because you get the 6mb of cache.
Buy your ram from macsales.com or crucial.com whoever is cheaper. Both are great rams.
Doesn't affect warranty and it is easy. For a guide, check out ifixit.com
Pretty pumped over here.

I am still not pumped that it is soo hard to change out the hard drive. My wife's MB HD is easy as ram to install.
The biggest difference besides Proc, has to be Graphics.
Also, your FSB is off, but at least you made the comparison comparably off.
I would have posted Max Specs on RAM, since that is where you will see a tremendous gain. Also, HDD SATA v. PATA should make a difference
Finished this post 1.5hrs after starting it... some people have to work. Sorry if this has been answered
