So... new PowerBooks next Tuesday? ;)

Seriously, looks great. I agree the 12" iBook should be $999.

We won't see PowerBook G5s until MWSF '05. September is too soon, I think. Anyone that needs a laptop should buy NOW!

EDIT: spelling

UK prices much chaepar! iBook 12" now £799 instead of £850 and PowerBook 12"£150 cheaper. 17" PB now £2000 instead of £2500+!
Yes that's awesome. I was wondering if they would be applying the same exchange rate policy as with the new eMacs... They are!!! Boy that's massive!

German store is down again. Think they fix the problem. I am very interested in the prices.

We will see.

Cheers

OK ... so ... when do we get the NEW new powerbooks. :D

Heh Heh. Someone was BOUND to do it. Might as well be me. :p

I just took delivery of a Powerbook 17" on Saturday 10 April, now it's been updated and it's a $1000 less!!!!

/me happy?

Now the gloss _IS_ gone.

In the USA there is some sort of 10 day price protection/replacement. Apple Australia might have the same deal!

It's really too bad the Superdrives aren't available in the 12" iBooks. I've already got a 15" Powerbook, but the thought of a 12" iBook with Superdrive for < $1500 would be VERY tempting.

I guess this means no Powerbook G5 today? :(

Nope, but Apple never said there would be... all the rumor people did! Apple has said that they would "like" to have a G5 PB by the end of 2004, and that they thought there was still a long life of the G4 in the PB (that was said in Nov 2003). So basically, I wouldn't expect a G5 PB until MW Paris in September or October, or more likely at MWSF in Jan 2005.... this is keeping more line with what Apple has always said.

Now, onto the new line:

Nicely done. Not only has the price dropped by several hundred dollars (in Canada), but almost every component was upgraded (and I am totally digging the 128 MB 9700 card). I will be buying today, and will enjoy my PB for the next two years (my average upgrade cycle).

the new homepage looks absolutely freakin' fantatic... every image there is of a new product announced in the last 7 days... this a mac zealots dream and what they live for. haha

Ok - firstly, well done to Apple! These upgrades are pretty cool for getting the best out of the G4 and I'm soooo tempted to buy the top end 15" PB, but now that we can all breathe a little more easily as the rumors have been substantiated - What's the next rumor to entertain us and get anxious about? lol

Thing is, what does everyone reckon: Is it worth hanging on for G5 PB in July (@ something like 1.8GHz for £2300), or is the 1.5GHz G4 with 128Mb graphics going to be a sound investment @ £1800 (Plus spend the £500 difference on extras like iSight, LaCie ExHD etc)?

The norwegian store was up for a couple of minutes with the new specs but no price drop. It's down again ... I hope when it comes back up, we'll see som price drops as well. I would really like to see kr 9.999,00 iBook 12".

15 vs 17

The 17 is now only $300 more than the high-end 15...very compelling. I use my current 867/15 a lot at night on the couch and am afraid the 17 may be too big and or hot? I'm buying one or the other today and would love to hear comments from 17 owners as to their experience using it as an actual laptop...TIA

Guess all we can do now is wait for the desktops to be upgrded and then we can start talking about the next revisions. The way the updates are going i wouldn't mind seeing things done next week, although if they keep updating products they aren't going to have any big things to annoumce at WWDC.

I think holding out for a G5 PB in the next two months is a pipedream... it ain't going to happen. Buy now and enjoy, or wait another 6 months or so (though I think it will be at MWSF Jan 2005).

Cheers!

I'm really glad I bought my Powerbook when they were released in the fall.
It's a great machine and I've been so productive with it.

I think these updates are pretty good.. not bad for the last G4 powerbook.
Not much of an upgrade from my 1.25ghz 15", but they seem solid.

If you are in the market for buying a powerbook, buy one now.
Don't wait. You're going to love it and they next time you
upgrade it will be a Rev. B G5 Powerbook which probably won't
come out until a few years from now.

I use Soundtrack, Final Cut Pro, & photoshop all the time and they all
run great on the G4 Powerbook.

I was always looking at the updated 12", but now that it's lacking the backlit keyboard (yes, the damn thing means so much to me) I may have to ask nicely for a 15" SuperDrive

What a great year Steve ! This is a really BAD update. I'm really disapointed. Not even a bigger/better harddrive.
I'm not gonna spend my money for this. I'll wait for the powerbook G5.

the new models are up on the UK store - combo - £1399, superdrive £1749.

which were £1599 and £1999 before - so thats a pretty decent price drop to be honest, with a better specced PB to boot.

i knew i should have waited.....

Iain, happy with my PB bought in January.

PS on a side note to you guys saying its not a great update - do people really update their PBs that regularly anyway? having just bought mine in Jan, i'd hope to get a few years use out of it before upgrading. admittedly i'm no power user, but even so....

pretty solid update - this is as much as we could have expected without new ship introduction, i'd say.

shrewed apple... SuperDrive option for 14" iBook only. makes sense, because otherwise, they would have had to merge 12" iBook and PBs together. nice cheaper option to get a SuperDrive than going all the way to PB... though i'm not sure if anyone would bother upgrading 1.2 GHz iBook with SD - it's just $100 less than SD 12" PB and specs are practically the same. all you get is more bulk of having a 14" screen...
