after previously being told on or before the 26th (ordered 2pm gmt on the 19th) i have just been told that it hasnt even been sent to manufacture yet! this is because apparently they are getting 2,500 faxes a day to confirm details if you are shipping to a different address from your billing address! so it was meant to ship yesterday but its still in a queue to be built. how annoyed can one man be! 3-5 days now of waiting for it to be put together- then shipping- i have so much work to do, but instead i will have to stay at work until 1.30am to do it, instead of taking it all home on a 15"er.

i hope by that time they have no wobblers and no dead pixelers left!

Did you ask for your 'Book to be sent to a different address in the UK? I didn't, I have to pick mine up from an Apple reseller in the UK. As long as its here by Friday I don't really care. I can't be waiting much longer than that though!

In a way, I'm glad I can't access the shipping details of my 'Book because anytime when it turns up will be a suprise!! :D

I'm also hoping there is no dead pixels or wobbliness with my machine!

hi,

i just got my new 12in ibook today (with 512mb ram and AE) :D . im actually typing on it now. so far, so good - didn't take me too long to set everything up (less than half an hour). Battery has been running nearly 2 and a half hours so far, with AE turned on the whole time, and i have 56% battery left. I have it set to reduced performance when running on battery at this point just to see what its like - it is a bit slower sometimes than when i had it on highest while charging the battery but not drastically slower. something a little weird - about this mac shows my processor as 1.07GHz, not 1GHz.

edit: i remember reading that someone was after white apple stickers, and that they were told that there was no way to get hold of them seeing apple had stopped making them - well i got two white apple stickers with my new ibook.

Thanks guys - X_Entity & aswitcher!

Unfortunatly I already found this site before I read your posts and have ordered the black X cloth.

Oh well, at least I got one! Just waiting for my BTO, maxed out 15" to arrive now, which I ordered on 19/4.

Hopefully it will turn up soon ;)

Damn websense filter at work keeps me from visiting the US shop, I will be making a visit there later though.

James,

Who's the courier for delivery in Winnipeg? I received shipping confirmation from Apple that my APP was shipping, but under courier it says "SAME DAY RIGHT AWAY"... A search on Google brought me to Monk.ca, who seem to have a partnership with Loomis.

Wondering if it's the same for you.

Thanks,
Frank

How hard is it to upgrade a HD in the 12" iBook? It would be killer if I can put a 5400rpm 80GB HD in there.

It is quite difficult, unless you are comfortable working around electronic devices, are careful with small parts, have some patience, and can follow directions. You will also void your warranty if you do it.

Hey,

They are at:

www.sameday.ca

It takes them a while to enter the shipping number apple gave you into their database for tracking.

My computer was sent fedex, and my bag same day. I have talked with same day and they seem pretty cool... apparently apple uses them a lot in Canada.

oh, btw, my PB is now 50 kilometers from my house, with a delivery date of today!!!

On another note, has anyone owned RadTech's PowerSleevz?

I'm deciding between either sticking with my existing laptop backpack (which isn't cool) and getting this to shield the PB while it's within my case, going for the ACME gold/red Slim one, or some other sleeve, so that I can throw it into any bag I get in the future.

It's funny how you want the best to match up to the PB...I didn't feel that way with my IBM T40...it didn't feel this exciting waiting for Mr. Blackie - or maybe it's just the hype that it's a Mac. ;-) "Join the cult and stop being a wannabe", my friend commented.

Perhaps it's true :D

Please, stop complaining about my complaining about the wobble. Geeze....

Bad Words..........it

Stop complaining about this g........m wobble, i have a new PB 1.5 ghz 15 inch and it wobbles only sometimes, but it really is NOT a BIG DEAL, would you not rather have a little wobble that will go Away over time instead of Dead Pixels, DOA or worse. I would, so buckle up, stop complaining, this thread is not for complaints it is for people who want to talk about powerbooks, the new ones, and so far none of the problems are close to being as bad as the first run aluminum powerbooks and in fact this powerbook series is probably the best one ever in terms of quality control, want to know why they were not shipped earlier by apple, it was probably because apple was scared about those same quality control issues that were troubling the first aluminum powerbook. So Please. Stop complaining about the Wobble, It is not a big deal. If it is return the powerbook and get another one that wobbles, it will go away.

hmmmm......

i just received my new 1.5 GHz 15"er, although i'm not typing on it right now, as it's doing the full charge-up thingy.

i seem to have all the bad luck. i have 2 dead pixels, although they aren't obnoxious. i also seem to have a little of the case "wobble," as someone put it. AND, i seem to have a slight discoloration on the RETURN key.

but i'm trying not to sweat the small stuff. i really don't want to return it, now that it's here and i've re-partitioned/re-installed. am i just being a chump?

btw, am i the ONLY one out there who didn't upgrade to 128 MB VRAM??? must be a lot of gamers on this board. i don't game, nor do i do 3D/CAD, so i didn't even consider it at first. when i later found out that it was only $50 extra, i felt a little stupid, but i still don't think i'll ever miss it.

Grrrr! My, much anticipated, 'new' machine arrived 16th but stayed in its box until last night when I finally decided not to return it in favour of the new machine. Opened box, charge, switch on - SHIFT KEY DOESN'T WORK (does on this machine though!). Dear Apple - well it'll cost you 10% for the opened box if you want to return the machine - what am psychic?! Furious is what I am. I've a good mind to reject the blasted thing and buy a dirt cheap ibook 12" instead. Grrr Grr and double Grrr!

Apple will happily replace the keyboard on it, just call them and they will mail it, is that really worth getting angry about, others have stuck pixels and wobbles, those are maybe worth it.

Just get a new keyboard

It would be great to hear from all these new buyers about heat and noise issues to see if there is a constant across the board.

I get soem guys that say it almost never gets very hot, that its cooler than a REv A and other say its just as hot!

SOme say that the fan barely ever comes on, and of course there is the Wobble.!

Is it possible to get all the new users to chime in on this.
We can graph it all and see what is happening. Percent wise.

Hot or not?
Quiet or not.
Wobble or not
Pixel dead or not?

Like most other posters, I too am writing this on my brand spanking new 12" PowerBook w/ Superdrive (my first ever portable). Considering I have never owned a portable, I don't exactly know what to think. But here are my thoughts.

Firstly, for a portable, this 1.33Ghz PB is fast, compared to my tower G4 867 with 1.5GB ram. Right now I have the stock 256MB, but have a 512MB SODIMM on back order. It should access the HD much less frequently with the added memory. Right now I cant run Final Cut Pro HD because it requires 384MB RAM.

Pros:
The 4x Superdrive is so much faster at burning than my 2x Superdrive since the 4X media only burns 1x on my G4 tower. The superdrive btw is a Matsh(i)ta DVD-R 4x, whereas on my tower, it was a Pioneer AO3.

General surfing and typing, the PB is completely silent, which surprised me. The PB also doesnt get hot as some suggested, I think the term very warm is a better description. For general use, it is just warm.

Cons:
Currently I got one stuck dead pixel on the upper left corner of the LCD screen. Only noticeable during fullscreen DVD playback. Current laptop LCD screens don't come close to the viewability of Apple's Cinema Displays. The PowerBook LCD has a narrower viewing angle, so it gets washed out even when viewing it slightly off-center.

When burning DVD's, the optical drive is pretty noisy. Halfway through the burn, the heat fan kicked in, and my PowerBook started sounding like a jet taking off. :)

My last observation is that the first time I picked up the 12" PB, it was heavier than I thought it would be. I guess that's a good thing, because Apple really packed alot of electronics into the case.

Airport Extreme has been extremely useful. I didn't realize how fast it was until I transfered some files from my G4 tower. Apple really made it simple being able to share files between my tower and laptop. I'm already surfing wirelessly which has completely changed my lifestyle. :)

h_harker -- I DO know how you probably feel, 'cause the same thing happened w/my order too. (see my post above, on page 43..) I was pretty steamed until just this morning when an Apple order status phone rep updated me and said my order has just shipped (= only about 12 hours later than original estimated ship date). So there is hope that the channel is moving. How to *feel* about it is a separate thing, however -- so here's what I did:
1) Got steamed
2) Called Apple order status a couple times (w/varying results)
3) Reviewed shipping experiences of other customers on this thread
4) Posted my annoyance on this thread
5) Got acknowledgement on this thread (THANKS mattster 16! :) )
6) Realized I'd done everything I probably could do, which made it possible for me to suddenly remember all the *other* things I also need to attend to just as urgently as getting ahold of my new P'book...!

Good luck, & I hope this helps ...

Red Pixel in the middle of my PB 1.5 display!!

 :( Red Pixel in the middle of my PB 1.5 display!! Apple is giving me the run-a-round. They say that the defect is acceptable. Give me a break! A red dot in the middle of my screen. Talk about poor customer support.

Hot or not?
Quiet or not.
Wobble or not
Pixel dead or not?

Far cooler than my old 12" ibook

Not as quiet as the ibook. I can hear a small fan that seems to stay on most of the time.

No wobble

And no pixels dead

All in all I got lucky and have seen no problems what so ever. I plan on reloading osx when I have a chance. the thing is beautiful!

Hot or not?
Hot, but only around the back bottom/top of the machine. What gets
really hot is the hinge of the LCD, right above the keyboard F keys. I
wonder if this is due to the power going through there.

Quiet or not.
Quiet, but if I listen for the fan, I can hear it. I never noticed before, but
that might be due to the other computers in my office. It is on right now
and my system is at 63.5C

Wobble or not
Slight wobble. Though apparently, I should not think about it, because I
should be happy with whatever Apple gives me, no matter how much this
piece of hardware costs. I love my PB :)

Pixel dead or not?
I have not seen any dead/stuck pixels yet. So far I have been very lucky
with my LCD's. I have had 3 15" LCD's (1 ThinkPad, 2 PowerBooks) 3 17"
LCD's (only my latest LCD has 1 dead pixel, but I don't notice it unless I
look for it), and 1 19" LCD.

Kimo and others, please tell me how one tests for dead pixels. Obviously big white lacunae will be easy to see, but dead pixels...please educate me.
