It is quite difficult, unless you are comfortable working around electronic devices, are careful with small parts, have some patience, and can follow directions. You will also void your warranty if you do it.

A brief powerbook report

Here is a brief Powerbook 15" 1.5Ghz w/ 128vram and dual 256 ddr ram sticks.

Hot or not? Hot while plugged in w/ AC cable and sorting 5000 songs in iTunes otherwise cool to warm.

Quiet or not. Silent except when reading / loading / writing from superdrive. But drive noise is appropriate.

Wobble or not? Solid as a rock. No wobble.

Pixel dead or not?

The bad news: One pixel anomalie. A red pixel in the lower left side of the display. Apple says "too bad, it is an acceptable defect, and no returns possible".

The good news: I massaged the pixel and it returned to functioning normally.

Bottom line: I love this PB and it is way more mobile than my old Dual 1ghz MDD w/ 17.4" Formac display!! But beware of Apple's lowsy stance on Pixel Anomalies / BTO returns.

Thanks GrokGod, I appreciate that they would do this an dwould expect them to but, you know, this is my 14th Mac of some sort since 1988 (SE30, 170, 1400C, 660AV, 9650 server, original ibook, white G3 ibook, Bondi iMac, Cobalt iMac, iMac AV, 2xG4 towers, 20" iMac) and the only one that I've been genuinely disappointed with. The whole customer service thing, whilst polite, is so begrudging. I even had to weedle out of them an admission that there had been a price drop on these refurbs so I would be due price protection.

I've cut my losses and am returning for a full refund. Going back to my G3 ibook and to think hard before I purchase again from Apple

I completely understand and feel what your saying.
I have owned many Macs also and the Rev A powerbook was a complete
dissapointment to me,

It hurt me deeply, when the Powerbook that I bought was SO poor in all the ways that people have been speaking of!
And APPLE's reply was to shrug me off.

I found it completely defeating, since computers are such a huge part of my work and life!

I felt betrayed.... BUT~

As time passed I began to realize a few things that helped my heart settle.
Apple creates innovative design that is often subject to problems, big problems! Are there Problems in the Pc world, jesus YES!

Does this make APPLE degrading customer sevice ok, NO!
But there are smarter ways to make changes than to hurt oneself.

If you managed to get a powerbook that had NONE of the typical problems associated with the poor production that was evident in the LCD's, Cases, Lids,Latches and trackpads.

You are one fortunate man, and when the God's smile on you, smile back.
Because there are only two computer companys in the world and Windows will never see my business!

What we need here is a way to unite and make APPLE hear us!
That is the challenge!!

Brothers unite!~

Whoooaa! You got a pixel to turn over,! WOW you da man!!

I don't live in Indianapolis?

Uhm... just checked my tracking from FedEX... which I gotta say, if this thing gets here when they say it will, FedEX is awesome! I would have gotten it shipped to my house from ShangHai within 2 days and a few hours and I didn't even pay the extra money for shipping. But I'm checking my status and is says 12:27 am Arrived at Sort Facility Indianapolis IN. Then it says 1:38 am Released for delivery Indianapolis IN. Should it say that considering I live just outside of Oklahoma City? It didn't say released for delivery when it left Alaska or Shanghai. I thought it was only supposed to say that when the drivers were in route to your house or something? What gives? Did anyone else see this same thing?

Hey aswitcher,

Anyways, i know you have a PowerBook on order (not an iBook), and its BTO, but maybe you could see it sooner than they are predicting if i was even being told up to 3 week wait for non-BTO.

Mmm. Ok. Apple, Nextbyte and Maccentric all said 3 weeks + for BTO... I'll see.

European BTO deliveries: tracking is fubar

Hi,

just a quick note to confirm that the order tracking page for the european stores is fubar. Got an apple sales rep. that confirmed that the bto shipment will leave shangai this afternoon, and that current estimated deliveries date should be disregarded.

Mine still says on or before 26/4 :D

It is weird. Mine says that has shipped but if you take a look at
<http://www.apecode.com/appletrack/>
you can see if it is like that or not.
Kuehne-Nagel is the company who takes care of the apple orders before arrive to europe, where TNT delivers it to every country.
In my case it says:

26 apr 04
departed from product source
Apple Shanghai
*
26 apr 04
boxes scanned
Kuehne & Nagel Shanghai
*
26 apr 04
Data received from supplier
Apple Shanghai
*
But I guess it has not really shipped yet... what do you think?
It can be that they want to full a plane with european machines before...

I'm so glad that I ordered my PB from a local store at not the Apple website. That way I can't check where my PB is at the moment, I don't have to be pi$$ed off that it spent more than 30min at the same spot or anything like that. I can just enjoy the time until it's here.... ;)

(I ordered my ipod through the online store an spent 2 weeks checking the shipping status every hour...)

Well, that's what I also thought... the only problem now is that I keep calling the local store to see whether they have arrived already :)

I already got the edu discount so I guess that won't work... Anyway, since they are not particularly friendly in the shop I don't mind harrassing them :p

Shipped!

Well, I just received an email notice from Apple that my PowerBook has shipped! I was shocked when I saw it... Couldn't believe it had already shipped.

Apparently it's leaving from TAOYUAN CITY, Taiwan. Am I mistaken, or is this not Shanghai? Hehe...

Looking forward to receiving it... No idea how long it will take, but nevertheless, it's exciting!

As a "Switcher" is there any *MUST HAVE* software I should be loading onto this beauty? I'd appreciate any suggestions!

Thanks,
Frank

Depending on how much Thinking and Planning you do - OmniGraffle is amazing. Also, invest the time and money in building a proper contacts database using Filmaker. You'll never do it once you've started loading stuff into Apple Mail or Entourage because we all 'make do', but a proper DB which is easily web enabled and can manage all your correspondence, invoices, accounts etc is just invaluable. Enjoy.

It's here!!!

I don't believe it...I wasn't expecting it until tomorrow, and guess what! IT'S HERE!! It came at 9.50am; total time from order? Less than 7 days!!

Unwrapping....unwrapping.....oooooh

*edit*
it's flawless....no dead/stuck pixels, no wobble or whatever. LUCKY!!

Release for delivery means it is going to the next "hub".

Out for delivery means it is actually in your city is on the actual fedex truck

Last time I went to an Apple Store I decided to wear my pro-Bush t-shirt to see if I could stir up any problems. I went with my girlfriend (UC Santa Cruz student) to buy her a 12" PB. We waited 20 minutes for help, and the guy helping us kept staring at my shirt. Then after the sale was done, he made some comment about it. Anyway, it was funny.

The time before that I had a really nice guy helping me, but he was so flaming I thought he'd melt my merchandise.

I think I spend at lease 24 hours of my life refreshing this tracking page since april 19th...
Must... Forget... Url....

:]

So far from the info gathered there seems to be quite a bit of HEAT going on with the new Powerbooks, and a ratio of Pixels stuck among new buyers, not too much of a wobble though, fewer wobbles than projected.

I thought that it might be as pervasive as stuck pixels.

Anyone else care to add to the roster of examiners?

It would be interesting to see an actual chart of gathered information on problems or production issues with the Rev B's.

Maybe it would be a good site project and could be used to let APPLE know how we feel about these issues.

Perhaps it could be a constructive method of effecting some change in customer support.

I had that FedEx window open for 6 days (I had additional items being shipped). Man, I was so happy to get rid of that thing....

Any MacWarehouse/CDW BTOs arrived yet?

dgoss said:
Ouch. I'm starting to hate that $250 in tax I saved going through MacWarehouse for my 17" BTO PB. Seeing them arrive hurts - I just called them hoping that it would be a few days behind - I was hoping for the end of the week - and my order shows May 13 now! When I ordered it was May 2, I think.

I'm trying to get my rep on the phone to get the big picture, but I think it will stay murky until it gets here...

Ouch -

d.

I was also told mid May for my BTO 15" 1.5GHz by CDW, idiots just shipped me a chip by itself! Any chance they are wrong - Anyone?
