It seems when you X out of the messages app and re-open, all of the previous texts are closed. I think this is a security thing so people cant see your texts on your computer.

it only shows up again when you have it X'ed out (but still open) and someone sends you a new text. You get a small text box on the top right. when you reply to it, it will open up the messages app and then show the rest of the convo.

I dont think this is a glitch.

That doesn't make any sense - if it were a privacy thing then why wouldn't Mail etc. work in the same fashion. I'm pretty sure this is a bug on my machine. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it (rebooting each time) but the messages still go away :( I guess I'll just have to wait for the next 1.1 release and see if that fixes anything...wish there was a way to report bugs from inside the app to Apple...

Do Messages sync with the iPhone/iPad when the Mac is turned off or if another user is logged in?

E.g. You start a conversation on your Mac, move to your iPhone (but at the same time another user logs in to their account on the Mac), and then later you move back to the Mac. The Mac would have the iPhone conversation when it is logged out?

Well crud. This was working flawlessly for me yesterday, and today it is completely broken.

Not receiving messages, can't open the 'Preference' pane, and it says I have no accounts set up.

Bummer.

I haven't read through this thread, so forgive me if I'm ignorant for asking, but:

I have iMessages (on my phone) set up to receive iMessages at two locations: my email address and my phone number. iMessages on Mac only allows me to configure iMessage with an e-mail address, not my phone number.

If somebody iMessages me from their phone to my phone number, will it appear on my Mac iMessages, where it's only configured to receive messages at my email? If not, then this is fairly pointless because 99% of my iMessage conversations are through my phone number, not my email.

Well, I just tried it out, and as I feared would be the case, when an iMessage is sent to my phone number, it only appears on my phone and not on the Mac iMessage app.

For those of you with Jailbroken phones, check out DeskSMS. It allows you to send and receive SMS/iMessages from Gmail, Google Chat, Chrome or a compatible IM client. I just thought I'd mention this for those who aren't running Lion or want to have SMS conversations from their computers.

I've been watching this thread, hoping for an answer... well, I finally found it. There had to be a way for Apple to sync up your phone number and email account.

I went to the Accounts tab in the Mac Messages app and clicked on the Account Details button, followed by the "View Account" button. This took me to https://appleid.apple.com/

After logging in with my @me.com account, I went to the Phone Numbers section. Low and behold, my mobile number was missing. As soon as I entered it there, the sync between my Mac and iPhone 4S started working!

Hopefully this helps others -- it did the trick for me!

Nice one!

Because you can only use Home Sharing with the SAME Apple ID:

However, there is a way around it. Messages let you use a separate Apple ID for iMessage than the one that you use for the iTunes Store. Therefore, I use my Apple ID for my iMessage and iTunes (which the iTunes is shared) and my family each have their own Apple IDs for the purpose of iMessage and Find My Friends.

No. No. No. You are not understanding how Home Sharing works. You must use one Apple ID for Home Sharing but you still use entirely different Apple IDs for iTunes. Home Sharing and iTunes can have two entirely different Apple IDs entered. They are handled separately.

The one Apple ID used in Home Sharing for all devices is only used as a sort of "Master Account" to link all the other Apple IDs together. All devices can still use their own entirely different Apple IDs. So many people simply do not understand this.

I keep getting the message my account is blocked from registering, anyone else have the same problem?

Saw this posted a couple times earlier but have seen no fixes. I am unable to delete messages as well.

can't seem to get the msgs i send from my mac to appear on my iphone as well. And yes, the appleid does show my proper phone numbers and th eiphone does have the mentioned email enabled as an imsg ad

weird indeed :s

Gets annoying when I'm on the Mac app but my phone is still continuously going off as well, keep having to put it on silent and turn off vibrate just to stop me hurling it at a wall

Also i sent a photo to someone from the Mac app which they received, but now every time i close the app it tells me its "waiting for receiver to accept" the file and i have to cancel the transfer.....odd!

other than that, loving life!

The more I fool around with Messages, the more I wish that the buddy list was pinned directly to the chat window with an option to detach it. So many of Apple's apps are tied directly together, it seems messy now to have a buddy list and then the chat window.

Other than that, I think I like it. There are some bugs here and there, and I wish there was a really easy way to combine all conversations with anyone (keep my iMessages and Facebook chats with friends) all combined into one conversation, and then I just get frustrated when I need to send a message to someone who doesn't have iOS 5, and I have to pull out my phone to message them...

Other than that, I hope things get ironed out before the final release in late summer. Really nice addition to the lineup!

Any idea how updates to the beta software will get rolled out? I'm on Version 6.1 (11D1069), but there's no "check for updates" feature.

Okay this might sound stupid but how on earth do I sync my iMessage to my iPhone because I put it under a gmail account is it because of that reason?

PS: sorry if I missed it and it was addressed earlier.

Does anyone know how to delete a privious chat history? There are some protocoll files in /Documents/iChat but everytime I delete them, they show up again after I start up Messages. Does someone has any idea what I could do to clear the chat protocolls?

100% agree. The weird buddy list window thing just looks clunky. I expected everything to integrate nicely.

Try this.

There's essentially two different iMesssage accounts if you have an iPhone - one that uses your phone number, and one that uses an email address. You won't receive any iMessages on your Mac or iPad from people who send it using your phone number.

The whole iMessage thing is a bit of a mess really, and I think Apple needs to combine the phone number and email address as one entity, so you receive an iMessage at all destinations regardless.
