Wish Apple brought Windows Live support to Messages. I know there's third-party plugins available in iChat 6 (such as this) but in Europe, Windows Live is the most used IM service.

I dig some dig up, and found this.

Well, that is one hell of a marketing tool. Here's the candy, I'm taking it back when you'll get used to its sweet taste. But don't worry, you'll get the chance to pay for it. :D

Mines FINALLY sync up with my phone and computer. Now, I can see messages on both. Took all day.

----------

By close, do you mean minimize? or completely exit out of it?

If minimize, then you will receive a pop up notification on your macbook saying accept or decline and a box to reply. So, you can be watching ESPN on your computer and a small pop up comes up and you can respond without losing ESPN and minimizing it.

sorry yea I meant if the messages app is exited out. Do we get some kinda push notification like how facetime does while closed out. Cuz from wat I know even my facetime is not open I will be able to receive facetime call.

I just tried it now (with it exited out completely on the computer) and yes, you still get a notification on the computer.

yeah messages is not working for me on my air anymore. people claim they arent getting messages or gets a whole new convo from me.. like they wont merge

----------

yeah my messages only seem to sync between the phone and laptop whenever they feel like it. and when i send someone a message from my air it starts an entire new convo with them any ideas?

...If I choose the same Caller ID on the iPhone, iPad and MBP (which mean they will all have that address in the "receive message on" setting, any message sent from any one of these devices will show up on all three, and any response will also show up on all three. If I change the Caller ID to an Apple ID-connected address which I DON'T have in the other devices' "receive messages on" setting, any message from that device, and following responses, will only show up on that specific device.

So I can have my iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and MBP seeing all outgoing and income messages, no matter where I send them from, and have all the incoming showing up everywhere. Or I could choose to separate them all from each other....

hafr, any chance you could elaborate on this? I don't find "receive messages on" settings on all 3 devices (MBA, iP4, iPad2). And--so far--I'm not having threads started & responded to on the MBA show up, too, on the iP4. Clearly, from the article, that's what's eventually intended, and you seem to have accomplished it. I'd like to join you in that happy circle. :)

My biggest problem is that I can only link this to my email address and not my phone number. I really want iMessage to be able to show me entire message threads across all devices. Right now my iPhone and iPad don't have full conversations, only what has taken place on those devices. I wish I could link my phone number to the messages app on my computers so that I could pick up right where I left off in a conversation regardless of where.

Update: Apple's servers appear to be overwhelmed at the moment, with the download button for the Messages beta showing an error message. The app is, however, still available via direct download (63.8 MB).

Update 2: The Messages download button is now operating properly.
Another example of where torrent technology would be the solution, but once again Corporate America fails to embrace it since it will make their whole "Torrents are only for pirating" campaign look dumb.

Agreed. Maybe they could rename it to something like "Assisted Downloading" or something, just to leave the word "Torrent" out of it.

In iOS, it's in Settings > Messages > Receive At (sorry about the mix up earlier :p)

On this screen, you can add/remove addresses on which you can be reached. I actually don't know if you could add an address that's not connected to your Apple ID, but I guess not. And in the bottom, you have the Caller ID-setting.

In OS X, it's under Preferences > Accounts > You can be reached for messages at:

Hah - I'll trade you bugs! I never delete my texts from my phone anyway, so having them get erased on my mac is really annoying. I did notice it saved the texts into the iChats folder and I can use quicklook to view them, but they're totally gone from the application until a new text comes in - then it shows the whole thread again, but once I click off the window and back into it - *poof* gone :(

Have you tried scrolling in the window? I noticed a closed thread sometimes shows as empty for me when entering the thread again, until I start scrolling, then everything shows up again...

----------

a bit OOT..

i did some reading, and read the 'mountain lion' is another name for cougar...

Yup. And Panther is another name for Leopard. And for Jaguar. And for Cougar. Depending on where in the world you are, that is.

Apple aren't naming their OS X-versions after different cats - they're just using different cat names.

----------

I haven't tried this but do we get an imessage even if the messages app is close?

I get iMessages that are sent to either of my registered e-mail address when the program is closed (not running at all), but messages sent to my phone number don't appear until the app is started.

I added my phone number in my Apple ID information (through Apple's website), and a few hours later iMessages sent to my phone number started appearing on the computer.

I must be doing something wrong as it simply doesn't work. I have setup my email account and made sure my iOS device also knows about email as well as the phone number but nothing happens. No one receives my iMessages and I dont receive any replies.

Anything else I should be doing?

I seem to have a problem.

I want messages to run in the background of my mac just sitting patiently down in the dock.

If i get a message and read on my iphone then the mac app springs up full screen on my TV. NOT something i want if i have guests over reading all my private messages.

How do i set it to sit in the dock and shut up until its spoken to?

I can't believe people are still sharing Apple IDs. Why in the world would you do this? Home Sharing allows you to share apps, music, etc. among each other without repurchasing. There is no need to share Apple IDs for the iTunes Store.

So many people don't realize this and it's a shame.

Because you can only use Home Sharing with the SAME Apple ID:

However, there is a way around it. Messages let you use a separate Apple ID for iMessage than the one that you use for the iTunes Store. Therefore, I use my Apple ID for my iMessage and iTunes (which the iTunes is shared) and my family each have their own Apple IDs for the purpose of iMessage and Find My Friends.

It is very annoying when I use Messages on my Mac and my iPhone and iPad ring everytime i get a message. On the other hand, i want my messages to be synced over all my devices, so i have to use same ID in every single iDevice.

Has anyone else encountered the below pop up message when trying to activate Messages on their Macs?

I've read the proposed solutions in this thread, but nothing is working. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I may activate Messages using my Apple ID?

I'm not getting messages synced between my iPhone and Mac. I thought that if I link my phone number with my email address, it wouldnt matter if someone texts/i-ms either one of them...both devices would receive the message.

I see that's not the case.
Am I doing something wrong?

I'm having some problems with it syncing up w/ FB chat, also. At one point, anything I sent to FB chat (from phone, site, or app) would show up in all three places. Now, though, if I initiate a conversation on FB, it doesn't show up in the Messages app. Also, the buddy list still looks the same as it did in iChat, but I can't make it come up easily to view who's online or who's not.

Oh, well. Growing pains. It'll be in good shape soon enough.

Personally love this. Instead of having to pick up my iPhone to reply to a text when working at my Mac...I can just type the reply directly from it. Then again that's probably just me being lazy!

Works well for me!

If I make a new message to a user I have already started a conversation with on the iPhone, it will continue the conversation on both devices, but the Mac will not see any previous messages.

It would be nice if iMessages on mac loaded all other conversations through iCloud so that you can see all previous messages and continue where you left off from any device.

That is my only problem. You can even close the app and still receive messages, just like Facetime! Now just wait for notification center on the mac, and you will get a little alert every time you get a message. Right now, you have to open the app to see who is messaging you.

Oh my goodness, I don't go on the internet for a few days and this happens! That is some mighty good news! This is going to be sweet to use with iPads and iPhones!

It seems when you X out of the messages app and re-open, all of the previous texts are closed. I think this is a security thing so people cant see your texts on your computer.

it only shows up again when you have it X'ed out (but still open) and someone sends you a new text. You get a small text box on the top right. when you reply to it, it will open up the messages app and then show the rest of the convo.

I dont think this is a glitch.
