anyone else finding that all their messages are deleted as soon as they minimise and reopen the app?

Also I am having all sorts of double messages and contacts. As a tech savvy person I can't imagine an average member of the public working all this out.

Apple are going to have to sort out this clusterf**k in this next update or they are in danger of doing the opposite of what people expect of their products.

Even with my archive folder being my .Trash, when I re-open the app, the history is still there. Which begs the question, where is Apple keeping the history?

No losing message issue, but my friend and I both had the double/triple message issues on both the computer & the iPhones.

We just sorted it out by finding out which email for each of us works on both the computer & the iPhone, then deleted the other threads of chat, and we're sticking to the one that works.

I see this as a problem for most people that get frustrated easily though. Having multiple emails for a contact, as well as an iPhone number. Took us about 20 minutes to figure out the problem. Now it's working perfectly

I'm starting to wonder how many people here actually owns a iPhone and iPad. Works the same way in terms of using your phone number or AppleID as the callerID.

Just tried closing, deleting the logs, disconnecting from the web and reopening the app. Messages still there, no new log created. So locally, would be my guess ;)

So, no matter what you attempt to do, the history remains. This is not good.

Haha, what the hell! If you look at my previous post, you'll see that I tried it quite thoroughly without my messages to my phone number showing up. I just tried it again, and now it works. Now all my messages from my phone to my phone number appears on the computer, regardless of Caller ID on the phone...

Yeah, I'm having the disappearing messages as well...I got messages on my iPhone, iPad, and computer...but as soon as I close (not quit, just close the window) and re-open it, the messages are gone and is replaced with "New Message".

No one else is having this problem?

Why WOULDN'T they disappear? If you "X" out of the window (but the app is still running), they should disappear IMO. If you minimize the window, they should still be there. This seems logical to me.

Am I wrong in thinking this?

Huh? That doesn't seem to make sense at all. Say I'm messaging "Ted" back and forth - we stop chatting and I close the window and do other things...but say we had talked about getting dinner that night, I go back to the app and the entire message chain is now gone. That's weird...on the iPhone and iPad it keeps all the messages until I either delete the entire thread or delete them one by one...why would the desktop version work differently - or is this not normal and I'm having a weird issue?

I can't delete a conversation no matter how hard I try. Clearing logs, deleting thread... As soon as I restart the app, there they are.

I love this, been using it all day!

Mines still there, even after I close the app.

Hah - I'll trade you bugs! I never delete my texts from my phone anyway, so having them get erased on my mac is really annoying. I did notice it saved the texts into the iChats folder and I can use quicklook to view them, but they're totally gone from the application until a new text comes in - then it shows the whole thread again, but once I click off the window and back into it - *poof* gone :(

Messages keeps quitting

Hmm...

After using Messages for an hour and everything working fine, it randomly quit. Whenever I try to open it, it loads the ichat menu and then closes giving me the same "quit unexpectedly" error. I can't delete Messages from my applications and when I reinstalled it, that didn't change anything. Restarting hasn't help either. Occasionally I see the messages I sent earlier for maybe two seconds and then it closes.

Anyone have any ideas on how to correct this?

Hmm, I've got some odd behaviour with Messages.

Sent a test message to my wife's iPhone (selecting her phone number, not e-mail address). She received it - but it appeared to be from herself  She replied, and when I received the reply, it appeared to be from me

I checked the Message Settings on her iPhone and found that it had my e-mail address set up (which is also my Apple ID) so I added hers, deleted mine, and re-tested. Now it was working correctly.

Now she's received an e-mail at her e-mail address asking me (i.e. the greeting in the e-mail is to me) asking to verify that her e-mail address is the new e-mail address for my Apple ID :confused:

If I click on the Verify link, will that change my Apple ID to her e-mail address from mine? I don't want to do this.

We only have one Apple ID, so does this mean that she will need her own Apple ID in order to use Messages on my Mac?

I can't believe people are still sharing Apple IDs. Why in the world would you do this? Home Sharing allows you to share apps, music, etc. among each other without repurchasing. There is no need to share Apple IDs for the iTunes Store.

So many people don't realize this and it's a shame.

I see what you're saying. I don't know, now that I think about it.

On a desktop app, I expect everything to disappear when I close a window, but since it's supposed to be an emulation of the iOS app, it shouldn't disappear unless explicitly deleted within the app itself.

Interesting. I wonder how it's supposed to be.

Well I got it downloaded but it seems to use your apple ID instead of your phone number.

I share my apple ID with my family and sure as hell don't want them all getting my messages.

ANy way around this??

Same as I posted before. Why in the world are you still sharing an Apple ID? You can use Home Sharing to share purchases with others in your family. They can have their own Apple ID.

People still don't seem to understand that Home Sharing allows you to share purchases with your family (apps, music, movies, books, etc.), so sharing an Apple ID is no longer necessary.

Yep same issue.

Also, I'm glad we can help iron out all these issues now. Apple seem to be learning!

a bit OOT..

i did some reading, and read the 'mountain lion' is another name for cougar...

I'm able to use the new Messages with MSN, I think it's because I already had Cocoon plugin installed for iChat.

Buggy as hell, but it is Beta. I still wish Messages had some way of picking not only the registered Apple ID, but the device. I am getting messages sent to all three devices and whenever I reply to someones message...it gets replied to them 3 times from my other iOS devices. And this isn't even about carrying on a message between devices. It's just duplicates.

Uninstalling now. Do not want. Nope.

Mines FINALLY sync up with my phone and computer. Now, I can see messages on both. Took all day.

I haven't tried this but do we get an imessage even if the messages app is close?
By close, do you mean minimize? or completely exit out of it?

If minimize, then you will receive a pop up notification on your macbook saying accept or decline and a box to reply. So, you can be watching ESPN on your computer and a small pop up comes up and you can respond without losing ESPN and minimizing it.
