Is there a way to install safari 14 alongside safari 13 to try it out?

Before you do the update, copy /Applications/Safari to your downloads folder. After you do the update you will have the old v13 of Safari and the new v14 of Safari at the same time.

4k Youtube videos work great on my 2014 MBP! (Ok I did have to go to develop/experimental features/VP9 SW decode on battery, then quit and restart Safari, but it works). To all that stuff I said about google filtering it out - Nevermind!

Do you mean 4K is working in Safari 14 on a Mac OS version below Big Sur?

I took the update. Never dreamt they would trash a main feature like Top Sites. That's why I use Safari. The new Start Page is stupid. I can't insert into the frequently visited. They had included a blank 404 Error page there! Why would I want reading list duplicated on the Start Page when a simple click gets it? Can i undo the update, does anyone know?

Good grief, I feel sorry for you guys that updated. I've used Top sites since I got my MacBook Pro. I open up my Mac and there it is. It just feels like home. Maybe the people responsible for removing it will bring it back on the next update.

Is anyone noticing that this upgrade to Safari14 is completely breaking Microsoft Edge browser? The app launches, but nothing works - all addons insta-crash, do not reload on retry, the settings page (edge://settings) says "some problem occurred". Nothing works. :(

The other thing that seems to not work (at least on YouTube) is the Wipr ad blocker. Videos just don't load (that area is a void of black rectangle), until I reload the page without content blockers. Anyone hitting this issue?

I am going to reinstall both and retry.

Edit: Edge is ok after a delete/reinstall of the app.
Wipr is now blocking ads in Youtube but I still get the "Skip Ad->" button.

I figured out the cause of the problem. For me, I have the ABP extension installed. I had to disable the ABP Control Panel and leave the ABP on. Ads are still blocked, but you no longer have the button to control the settings in Safari. It's strange that a button on Safari can trigger the GPU.
Thanks a lot! Same here, it was the Ghostery Extension.. had to disable the control panel. Very strange.

Installed Safari 14 on my 2010 Mac Pro running Mojave 10.14.6, and now Safari quits immediately upon launch. Restarted and same thing happens.

Did you ever get Safari14 working?

I finally got mine going after Safari immediately quitting at startup and running Mohave.

Let me know if you need a tip.

on the iMac Pro, Safari is showing up to 8K options in youTube.

I didn't use Top Sites but isn't Frequently Visited on the start page the same as Top Sites when expanded?
No, Frequently Visited is a completely different animal. You have no direct control of what goes in or when. With Top Sites, you had total control of was available with a couple of clicks, then the site of interest was then available with one click until you decided otherwise(deleted the link).

The Frequently Visited feature is controlled by the software itself (I think SIRI is involved in some manner). I frequently check an 'underground dot com' radar page, often a couple times a day, yet this page NEVER appears in Frequently Visited. Since using Safari 14, I have visited my credit card website once to make an account payment, that damn webpage showed up immediately in this Frequently Visited section of Start Page. Hmmm, that's rather odd behavior.

No sir, Top Sites and Frequently Visited are NOT interchangeable in functional operation at the user experience level. Whether or not Frequently Visited will be the new Top Sites remains to be determined, however, that is not the case right now.

If you're using Safari as part of any workflow, but especially a Google suite based one, you might want to turn this back off. It's under Preferences > Tabs > "Show website icons in tabs".

When on, the tabs bar looks like this and won't change regardless of the width of the Safari windowView attachment 954219:

Is there a way to have the the website icons and the tabs? I liked it like it was in Safari 13.

Thanks for the information!! Appreciate you taking the time to explain it so well.

Any ideas with Catalina how to speed up performance back to Safari 13 speeds? 14 is really choppy with scroll performance, especially if a YouTube video is open.

I have a Mac Pro 2019, with 12cores 96GB of RAM and the Vega II 32GB video card. Safari has managed to slow down the entire system. Brutal! Perhaps I should re-install the OS and roll back to 13 for now
