Now that the tabs aren't on top, there isn't the convenient handle on the sides of the tabs that allow you to drag and drop a tab from one window to another...

Right, because it's so much more convenient to have to click on the tiny corner of the tab as opposed to just grabbing any part of it.

sigh Apple. I really liked the tabs on top -- you could pop in single Safari windows into another one to set open 2 tabs.

Why do people seem to think this functionality is gone? it still works just like before. Just drag a tab from one safari window and drop it into a single window, and presto: two tabs in one window.

I wish there was an option to have the bookmark bar replace the title bar. It would save as much room as ToT and honestly I wouldn't miss the title bar at all.

Until you want to move the window and start clicking bookmarks...

I miss tabs on top.

Can someone tell me exactly what this "no tabs on top" business means? As far as I can tell, my tabs are still on the top. I open a neb tab and it appears right under my favorites bar. Where else would they go?

they mean the title bar, i think this was the case in the beta

The what?

Yes

great! I really missed that in the beta.

I wonder if they have fixed the bug I (and hopefully others) submitted with the wordpress WYSIWYG editor where if you tried to change text color it instead changed the text to some font I dont think I've ever heard of…

it looks like Apple is trying to provide PC experience with this one:
- installation hanged and required a hard reset
- it took forever to start it after re-installing it the second time
- safari crashed (force quit only with a bug message to Apple)
- restart safari, very slow
- a nifty feature of taps on top disappeared
- custom icons disappear after Safari restart, WTF?
You replaced an old version of Safari with a new one, overwriting any icon changes. What were you expecting? Just go back and reapply your custom icons. You should have already know this.

And it's also nothing new that QuickTime and Safari updates require a restart, because they both modify Quartz, WebKit and some other stuff that effects the underlying kernel.

I hope someone figures out a way to restore tabs to the titlebar.

Instead of a fixed title bar, it was replaced with moving, dynamic tabs. They were "tabs on top" because they were on top of everything else: the address bar, bookmarks bar, etc.

It's just like Google Chrome.

1Password has already been updated to work with Safari 4!

Just open 1Password, check for updates, and it should pop right up for you. After installing the update and restarting safari, the 1P button was back. If you have issues, there's a forum post about it in the 1Password forums.

I also am not a huge fan of this version though. I miss the tabs on top and I have no idea what that new loading indicator is all about. What was the point of adding anything up there if it's not going to show you the page loading status?

Awwww. I liked tabs on top too.. So much wasted space without it. Took a little while to get used to but it seemed a lot more polished to me.

Hopefully onyx, or one of the other terminal shortcut apps will quicky add a switch so we can choose between the two easily.

Adding my vote to tabs on top. It at least seemed innovative, even if Chrome did it first. Apple can't seem to get browsers right.

Great so far...

So far no crashes and its really fast. Pages load almost in an instant. Also ive noticed that its not taking up so much memory as before. I have two windows open with 7 tabs on one and 5 on the other. Safari is currently only using 185mb. Before id only have a window open with just a few tabs and the memory usage would skyrocket. I'll keep an eye on it and see how long it lasts...

me too!

i want my tabs on the top again! I have grown to love it. Give us the option!

me too, i don't like the tabs on the bottom. they are also upside-down. if microsoft would do this people would complain that such a silly idea could only come from m$. apple, why did you flip the tabs upside down? that is not the right visual metaphor...

Obviously, such a silly idea as upside-down tabs could only come from Apple.

safari 4 feels slower (than safari 4 beta) and there's not even an option for tabs in title bar :( WHY?!?!?!

Feels snappier. Like that.

I never used the tabs on top, but I think the new "rounded" tabs are butt ugly. I can't believe no one else has mentioned this?

I actually prefer the tabs where they are now. So far I'm impressed with the speed of Safari 4. I clicked around to various sites and pages seem to load instantly. Now if they could bring this to the iPhone.... :)

FYI Chrome didn't do it first, Opera did it way before.

Apples implemtation was horrible from a user point of view. They couldve adapted it but decided to switch back.

Opera had tabs on top but not integrated into the title bar as far as I remember.

I think I want to download Safari 4 just to find out if I like Tabs on the bottom! :p

Missing functionality from the beta 4.0

My safari setup is 5 windows on screen
window one top left Tech websites and blogs about 25+ tabs open
Window 2 middle left News and politics sites and blogs 25+ tabs open
window 3 bottom left Online bank website.
Window 4 Top right Boinc project websites and other misc websites around 20 open at any one time.
Window 5 Alaska volcano eruption of MT Redoubt webcams other volcano webcams(Hawaii)
In the beta 4.0 you could croup the tabs in the list and then switch around the list using the >> symbol at the end of the tab list. all the tabs would switch to a group around the tab you selected. this way I could move from one set of blogs on one topic to a set showing news sites to then move the set showing to just those blogs. the tech window 1 would have tabs grouped as favorites followed by blogs followed by review sites I could move the tabs shown to have one group showing at a time making it easy to switch back and forth in the group now the >> symbol only changes the last tab showing. So now if I want to group tabs together I need to double or more the number of open windows. this sucks big time. The >> symbol behavior has reverted to safari 3.0.
