Since you're new here, you may not know thie kind of restart after applying some updates is not unusual. :) Always need patience when you apply any updates that require a reboot. :)

It's installing system files via a special boot process. That's the reason it hangs there for so long and then reboots. There is a folder created in your system folder called "Install On Reboot" or something of that nature after running these updates.

My repair permissions is going crazy with changes. Can't believe how many.

Second pass none. Restart Required  :( No Thanks. I'll wait 'til I have a break I can afford to reboot in. I wish Safari had a memory for all the windows and tabs that are open so you could restart it from where you left it last. Is that in Leopard's Safari anyone know?

well that is a helluv a great idea dude. Good thinking. I dount Steve is listening though.

Installed the update without a hitch, restarted twice though. Must've patched something at the system core.

Install went smooth here.

Only "wierdness" is it reverted the wallpaper on my secondary monitor to the one previous.

Long Restart

Last Sunday I updated to 10.4 (from 10.3.9), nothing interesting...
Then when I updated that to 10.4.9 (using the combo) it restarted twice, (the first time I gort the Apple screen for a long time, then it went black and restarted.
This securaty update simply took a long time to restart.

...........weird......

iMac G4 (Flat Panel)
768 Mb RAM
1.25 Ghz

...........weird......

What you're describing is normal. It's related to the update process. When it's appearing to "hang" at the grey screen, it's actually continuing activities related to the upgrade. I'm not sure why, but there was one update in between 10.4.0 and 10.4.9 that initiated a double restart (like the one you describe). None of that is anything to be concerned about.

Double restart, it took a little while but it wasn't that bad. Don't notice a change at all.

My C2D iMac asked to restat. I walked away & it had a screen asking me to hold down the power switch saying it needed to restart again. So I did, then it hung for a while & did its own restart then made it thru to the end. I was ready to get out my hardware test discs but was patient instead.

Now all is back to normal.

Just installed here, no problems.
However, I restarted my MBP before I ran the update - uptime had been 16 days, so I wanted to install on a freshly restarted system.
The installation and restart did take a bit - especially at the gray loading screen, but this is kind of expected out of the majority of security updates I've done from Apple.
Updates are always welcome.

You mean like FireFox has had since 2.0? And before that via an extension? Yes, that is a great feature and I certainly do wish that Safari had it. Or at least the ability to have multiple home pages like in FF.

1 for 2

I managed to update my iMac 20 C2D and a Macbook 1.83 with this new update. Everything seems fine with the iMac but the Macbook.... ouch. Everything changed.

Here's a list of some changes that occured:
- Dock Reset itself with iMovie icon missing from Dock?!
- iTunes load up as if I never touched it before with the Agreement opening page!?
- On the Finder window, the left panel where you have the icons for Applications, Documents, Music, Movies etc.... the default bottom four (Docs, Movies, Music, Pictures) on the left had a generic blue folder instead of the default icons Mac OS has.
- Safari's bookmarks are gone.
- Basically the whole system reset happened after the 2 bootups during installation.
- Music in the Music folder suddenly disappeared.

and probably much more.... :(

Has anyone experienced this after the software update?? I guess I have to reinstall the OS again for the 2nd time in 3 months. Blah.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Kind of interesting that this update is for 10.4.9 only. I'm still running 10.4.8, so, apparently, no security update needed for me.

Makes me wonder if they rushed 10.4.9 out the door a little too soon.

I can recommend this general system maintenance/troubleshooting util--can be useful (followed by a restart) for miscellaneous occasional OS X problems:

YASU
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21674

(I haven't tried this update yet, but if I do and see problems, YASU is where I will turn first. It forces your machine to do a bunch of tasks that normally get done automatically but rarely. It also repairs permissions and can dump caches.)

Have you checked that you're using the correct user directory? It sounds like you're not using the one you should be.

I was on the right user for each of the updates on their respected machine so I'm not sure how I could be using a wrong user directory.

The problems that you posted suggest that a new home directory was made for you. (Or the old one was deleted somehow...OR you no longer have permission to read it.)

Yes, but you're missing the security updates from .9
Plus these now.
