APPLE has NEVER said that they are not going to allow third party headphones to work. READ THE PRESS RELEASE. They said the exact OPPOSITE.

Oh my head hurts.
My comment was poorly worded.

When I said locked in, I meant that there are few alternatives out there.

Here in Japan, I can go to a local electronics store and have literally 100's of headphone and earphone options. Haven't seen one that will work with Apple's interface. That is why I said locked in.

I'd love to pick one of these up to use solely in my car, instead of fumbling with my iPhone... but there would be no way to control it?! Thats a dumb move.

Yes, because when Apple designs an iPod, they design it to be used in your car. Nope.

The part they don't like is that you are locked into Apples earphones which leave a lot to be desired for a few power users on MacRumors.

Corrected.

That's true. So, as long as I never want an up-to-date iPod Shuffle with the most storage, I'm good.

Or you could just pick up a Nano, which is infinitely more functional, and has twice as much space...

Ok, go buy one and wait until you need new headphones. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to shell out $30 for new headphones.

Oh, so when your headphones break on other iPods, you're entitled to a free replacement? Seriously, you're STILL going to need to pay $30 when your headphones break, regardless if they have controls on them or not. Just this time you have to choose from one of the dozen or so headphones that ALREADY have Apple compatible remotes on them.

Smaller??? Really???

Do we really need an even smaller iPod that holds more songs? It's become the annual mantra of Apple!

Sometimes I think they are becoming a kind of parody of themselves, you know what I mean?

It's the mantra of every consumer electronics company. If it wasn't, we'd still be toting around brick sized 1st gen iPods with 5 gigs of storage.

Phail

Also to everyone complaining about "Baawww no 3rd party headphones" maybe you should look on the store and you'll see that companies have already released headphones with the inline remote attached.

So my high end headphones i have must be replaced with specific 3rd party offerings..........

Looks great! And for once this is something we didn't see coming!

The white earphones that come with iPods are fine anyway.

If you're an audiophile should you even be considering a Shuffle???

If you're an Audiophile you wont be uisng ANY Apple products (unless they have valves!) .... and certainly not their headphones! depends on your definition of the word 'Audiophile' though ... what exactly is an Audiophile because I listen to music regurlary (with expensive home systems) ... but I'd still use a Shuffle (well, not now!).

As I said in an earlier post, just because I want to use a cheap player, it doesnt mean I have to settle for using por headphones ... and (as such) if this is a cheap player, then its not really cheap compared to what else is out there!

Yep. I hope Apple's design goal for this wasn't to make something so small there was no room for controls. It seems like a dangerous focus to me. but what do i know. I thought the new Mac mini with no keyboard and mice included was a stupid idea but it seemed to work out for them.

Have you noticed how smooth things seem to go for Apple? I often think Steve Jobs has sold his soul to the devil to make Apple work.

They could be nice, if the recorder has quality and i could use these headphones in addition with my ipod touch...

Or you guys think that wont work?

Because god knows that everyone uses high end headphones with a device that is probably worth less than the high end headphones themselves.

Harden the **** up and get over it.

Wake up and smell the coffee you complainers. It's an ipod SHUFFLE - it's not the top of the line beast meant for connecting and controlling and customizing etc.

If you don't like the shuffle and want other earbuds/headphones, do one or more of the following:

1: Buy the old one. It's still just as good as it was yesterday.
2: Buy a nano (it's actually really small, and even has a screen)
3: Buy something from another manufacturer og an other ipod
4: Just shut up and accept the realities.

Apple has ADDED another item to their list of ipods. If you don't want it, it doesn't affect you AT ALL. I know they will be discontinuing the old shuffle in the future, but now you know, and you can buy one during the next weeks/months if you prefer that one. It's not like the mac pro where the old one was ripped away without warning.

Seriously, don't you just love Apple apologists?

WAKE UP! The last product that Apple made that was truly innovative was the iPhone in 2006. We have had 2 years of nothing but incremental upgrades and change in materials (iMac design revision). Teach these hype-riding idiots a lesson by selling your Apple stock - his Jobsness should've been deposed once his health started affecting his design.

Seriously, I first saw this on Engadget and my first reaction was "Is this a joke?" It looked like something the Onion would do.

1) No 3rd party headphones
2) No repeat functionality of any kind, not even a manual repeat where you would just click "back" at the end of the song.
3) That computer voice is going to crap on the mood of the song.
4) It takes too long to get anywhere.

If Apple wanted to introduce VoiceOver as a gimmicky feature it should have been an OPTIONAL entity, not forced upon the user in combination with forcing the user to stick with their earbuds.

If you don't at least doubt Apple in the slightest after this, then you're truly crazy.

It's my assumption that Apple Feels like this is an improvement to headphone design. The Nano is compatible with it, the Touch, the iPhone, and now the Shuffle. They are clearly attempting to push the headphone market into this direction (Which they have the power to do, considering their market-share.)

So just because you can't pick up 3rd party compatible headphones on the corner store today, doesn't mean you won't be able to in a month. In the meantime, Apple is offering you free, very decent quality headphones that are compatible and premium In-Ear that are compatible as well.

So should Apple wait around for headset manufacturers to catch up, or should they continue to innovate and be the market leaders that they have been? I think we all know the answer to that.

Don't worry, the Zune is compatible with ALL of those headphones. That doesn't make it better.

Way to be dismissive.

What about those of us with young children have been saving their allowance for months to get an iPod but the Apple earbuds are too large and uncomfortable for their 8 year olds? Now they have to get an adapter in order to use earbuds that fit or save for a few more months to get a nano that they do not need the capacity of.

I know it is not an essential purchase, but an 8 year old daughter saving $50 for this purchase was an accomplishment. Now she has to wait even longer, turning this into a possible negative lesson for her.

"a negative lesson for her"? What, that things change? That when it takes you a year (or however) long to save up a miniscule $50 that you aren't always going to get what you want? Wow, yeah a real negative lesson there. Its called LIFE, get her used to it. There are always refurb older iPods out there, or just go to Best Buy or some place similar that sells olders ones, not that hard. Maybe you haven't taught her how to shop around yet, hmm...The people that have the cash on hand when something new comes out that they want are the ones that "win".

Nice, I like it. But what concerns me is how Apple have increased the price on this thing. The previous 1GB was £31, now this one is £59. Sure, you get 4GB, but I still think Apple should offer a lower end model. This seems to be the case with the laptops and desktops too. They are getting more expensive. During 2008, Apple products were becoming more affordable, but it now seems like Apple are deliberately trying to making the pricing more like 1998. And they know they can get away with it, because when Steve announces a small price drop this September on this new Shuffle, the audience is going to go wooooo, as if it's the best thing since sliced bread.

But yes, this new Shuffle, especially in black, is stunning.

3rd Party Adapter

So now this gums up those of us who want to use our existing headphones. Hopefully 3rd parties will fill in the gap with an adapter,… however… The only place to put this would be really close to the shuffle itself. Creating a fairly long lead wire with input jack on on end and controls on the end that's roughly the same length of the new line for the shuffle won't work, because when you plug in your headphone jack in the top of it, the cord now is way too long. Putting it really close to the shuffle without much of a lead at all is also bad because now it's nowhere near as convenient. I guess you could have the same length as the current one then roll up your excess cord on your headphones (it would look tacky with some sort of twisty tie)...

Really don't know what to do on this one.

"Smaller and Better" is a great focus for consumer products, no doubt about it. It's what made apple great in many ways. But I think a line gets crossed where you get in the realm of pretentious and silly.

And you truly have no life and nothing to do but rant about this product. Simple solution: DON'T BUY IT IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT. WOW, amazing isn't it? Get over yourself. Get a girlfriend or something. It'll give you something to do. But maybe not literally considering your attitude toward things...

We obviously differ in opinions on this.

IMHO, Apple earphones are terrible. But then again, I am in Japan and spoiled with the much better alternatives available here. :)

Compatible Headphones?!

If you go to the Apple Store and choose iPod Accessories and then you limit it to headphones compatible with the Shuffle, you get this: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/ho...hones?n=ipodshuffle3&mco=MTU4NDM&s=topSellers

Only TWO headphones on that page have remotes, is there some way to control the iPod without the remote? Because they all specifically say that they are compatible with the iPod Shuffle 3rd Generation

The headset is NOT proprietary
Stop regurgiating useless info.

Yes there are products that work with it, as it use the same 4 pin headphones that work with iPod touch.

See, same headphone that works with iPod touch:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB770

Quick example. There are many many threads. iPod touch headphone
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/606567/

The shuffle is a new product, so old headset product pages are unlikely to be updated at this time.

So again, 4 pin connectors headphones are on the market for YEARS now.
