Good option for those that need it and in line with competitors pricing. Wireless charging enabled is a bonus as well. However, it’s hideous, just like any other battery case imo.

Go, Go, $13 military discount!!

Well you put it on and no need to flip switches or anything and probably one of the few cases that have lighting port and Qi charging which other battery cases do not offer that I know of
Bingo! Lightning port instead of micro usb is clutch. What’s interesting is Mophies cases for Galaxy S 8’s and up have usb c ports but the cases for iPhones have micro usb even though they could use lightning instead.

I buy my charging cases off Amazon for under $30. Been using them for years, they work great and are thinner than Apple's case. They now have lightning ports instead of MicroUSB, and some have wireless charging as well. Why spend $129?!

I'm not sure why anybody would want a pregnant case when Apple designs their devices with slimness in mind.
Crazy man, crazy.

Those cases look AWESOME! I had Apple's Smart Battery Case for my iPhone 7...you really need to own one to realize how great it is! Charging with Lightning, view charge for phone and case on screen...

My concern is the lower speaker looks blocked on these new cases. My iPhone 7 case had holes that fired the sound forward. These new cases are nice in that they don't increase the length of the phone like the older ones did...but if the sound is blocked that's gonna be a dealbreaker for me.

As another asked: do we know if the case physically plugs into the phone? The design is so much thinner at the bottom of the phone than last generation, I assume not. Could it be that the case interfaces with the phone via Qi + bluetooth (for data)?

Apparently not. My Xr drains pretty fast if I forget to close Apple News or any other news app by swiping them completely gone.

I think the Reddit App does that too and a social media app our school uses to keep parents informed of school events. If I remember to swipe all my apps closed I get good battery life. If not, I don’t make it through the day sometimes.

Apps don't use battery when not in the foreground, and if you have the News app set to background refresh, closing it completely does not terminate the background refresh.

Mophie must be on crack too since their packs cost the same. There's always the cheap Chinese crap if you can't afford these, but I'd carry a fire extinguisher just in case.
...as apposed to expensive Chinese crap with an Apple logo?

I looked at those. Two objections: 1)micro usb charging to the case, although it is Qi supported. 2) it leaves the bottom of the phone exposed.
Micro usb alone is a deal breaker.

I don’t think you did look at them. It isn’t microUSB for one.

Apple today released new Smart Battery Cases designed for its 2018 iPhone lineup, including the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR.

Available in black or white, each Smart Battery Case is priced at $129 and is designed to add extra battery life to the iPhone. The cases are similar in design to the past battery case option Apple offered for the iPhone 7, with a bump at the back to house a battery pack.

Each case provides a varying amount of battery life depending on device. The iPhone XS Battery Case, when paired with the iPhone XS, offers up to 33 hours of talk time, up to 21 hours of internet use, and up to 25 hours of video playback.

The iPhone XS Max with the XS Max Smart Battery Case offers up to 37 hours of talk time, up to 20 hours of internet use, and up to 25 hours of video playback.

The iPhone XR with the XR Battery Case offers up to 39 hours of talk time, up to 22 hours of internet use, and up to 27 hours of video playback.

Apple has not offered a Smart Battery Case option for the iPhone since the introduction of the iPhone 7, presumably due to the wireless charging feature in the iPhone 8, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. There has also never been a battery case for larger iPhones, with prior cases limited to the iPhone 6/6s and iPhone 7.

Rumors in December, however, suggested that a version compatible with Qi-wireless charging was in the works, and Apple's product listings confirm that the new Smart Battery Cases are indeed compatible with Qi-certified wireless chargers.

As with the previous versions of the Smart Battery Case, the new options provide an intelligent battery status on the iPhone's Lock screen and in Notification Center so you're aware of the remaining charge of the device.

The cases charge wirelessly as mentioned above or via Lightning and Apple says faster charging is available using USB-PD compatible chargers. Lightning accessories, like the EarPods with Lightning Connector, are also compatible.

[doublepost=1547594910][/doublepost]How much has the amount of hours increased with this device vs factory battery life of the XR on a single charge ?

Ordered the XS version for my X. If anyone is apprehensive about doing this, I'll report back on Friday to let you know how it works. Should work just fine if you can live with the camera gap.
Thanks. I’m really curious as to why this wouldn’t fit Is the iPhone X slightly larger than the 10XS or Vice versa

I just wish these things would let the phone go down to 90% first, then use the external battery.

Would help the life of the internal phone battery.

The battery case I use on my 6S is actually no more than a battery pack in a case. It just holds a number of charges and when the battery gets low, you physically press “charge” and it charges the phone. Better for the reason you highlight (it cost £12!)

$129 BWAHAHA they must be smoking crack

Im sorry, Im an Apple fan and owned every iPhone since the 3GS but they've lost touch with reality in recent years.
[doublepost=1547595126][/doublepost]I agree it's complete bs with the prices. A company with $500 Billion dollars in the bank could start offering some discounts to those who made them all that cash once in awhile....

It’s similar to what they had for previous iPhones. Actually it looks a little better. Also, it is “smart” in that the phone draws from the case first. That means that, unlike with other battery cases, it doesn’t use up a battery cycle on the phone if it is connected to the case.

Yea the apple battery cases really do act like an extended battery for the phone. They report their charge level in iOS as well. The charging and discharging is automatically managed instead of having to turn on the charging like on third party cases. The problem with waiting until your internal battery draining before switching on the external battery is that it uses up a charge cycle on the internal battery. If you can keep the internal battery close to full for longer then you can extended its useful service life.

Another smart feature is that the Apple battery cases don't trigger the "I'm plugged into a wall" power profiles in iOS. This means that even though the smart battery case is charging the phone it won't trigger actions like iCloud backup, photo uploads, photo analysis, etc... which drain your battery like crazy.

Aftermarket battery cases like Mophie or other cheap ones just act like a battery bank or a normal wall charger. The phone has no idea its running off a second battery. So it will behave like you are at home plugged into the wall.

You also won't find fully functional lightning ports on third party battery cases. The ones that have lightning ports will only charge. No data or audio pass through. The apple battery cases always behaved like the native lightning port on the phone.

So Apple design philosophy is for thinner and thinner, at some expense of battery size. And improved battery life solution is then a fatter case at additional cost...
For the 5% that need it, and the 95% are fine with the normal life and thinner phone? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ seems okay to me.

Ignorant opinion — iPhones actually got a little thicker in the past couple years, while also increasing battery capacity.

There are definitely many cheaper options and some even have lightning ports but they are only for charging. Third party lightning port cases don't pass through data or audio so no syncing, CarPlay, or lightning headphones.

Weirdly enough, a lot of people don’t realize the size of the battery has increased in the iPhone because their useage has also gone up.
