I love Apple but I wish they didn't suck so bad when it comes to input devices.

Trackpads are an ugly compromise on a laptop, using one with a desktop computer is a ridiculous idea.

The first Apple input device i've actually wanted... this looks really nice –*i've wanted a trackpad on my desktop for a very very long time! I love this idea... just need to give it a try

The thing I hate most about my Macbook Pro is using the trackpad (nothing against it in particular just that I hate trackpads in general compared to using a real mouse). I connect a mouse whenever possible (not usually possible when using it as a portable recording studio). I can't imagine wanting to use a trackpad on a desktop when I have perfectly usable mouse nearby. I was hoping this was part of a new AppleTV update as a better control mechanism (and possibly for powering iOS apps on it) than that crappy little remote it comes with. I guess not.

The trackpad was the best thing about the MB when I had mine, even if it was only for a short time. To me Apple has done a piss poor job creating a good mouse in the pass decade +. However the multi-touch trackpad was the first input device from Apple that I used that I actually really liked. Not too many products out there that can get me to give up my MX Revolution. I will test this out at an Apple store and see if it replaces my mouse.

li-ion w/ detachable usb cable?

why dont they make this with a detachable usb cable?

this way it can recharge directly from the usb port of the pc while in use, and the cable removed when not needed anymore. or you just keep it stuck in if you dont mind the cable.

AA batteries are so 20th century...

That would be perfect –*are there any keyboards/mice that do that already?

To everybody that will buy the magic trackpad, what do you hope to gain out of it? What will you use it for? What new ways of doing things may come about from this new product?

I work with my MBP all day long. Since I got a iMac 27", I didn't like the Magic Mouse only cause for the flat shape of the mouse. I like using a track pad, and this would suit me better than a mouse. Some people are different. I would consider buying a Magic Trackpad but I would go test it out at the Apple Store first before buying.

Just getting used to how great the magic mouse is - but this looks just brilliant!

Have been using air mouse on the iphone and this looks to be the next step.

The days of the mouse are numbered - how 20th century is a plastic pointer?

I'm not feeling the magic. I'll keep my mouse, thanks..

aside from scrolling web pages, I find the new trackpads to be inconvenient

Yeah, lets take the greatest source of frustration on a Laptop...and dedicate it to a desktop. It's like a Studio that doesnt have any good movie ideas...so they let their creative department sell a film about a talking, special forces unit of Guinna Pigs. LAME

no way would throw money at this product. they should have at least added to a wireless keyboard to replace where the numeric key used to be

If you can't see it being useful then you've never used the glass trackpad and all the multitouch gestures on the Unibody Macbooks.

I have one, but I still dont see it being very useful for me. YMMV

I fail to see how this could be better then a mouse. In fact, I prefer using the mouse over the touchpad on the MBP.

ill give it a twirl but i'd rather throw the moola at a tablet

Wireless is a no-go for me

As long as this is wireless only (especially Bluetooth which has proven notoriously unreliable for me so far) Apple will never sell one of these to me. You know, my Apple aluminum keyboard has USB ports on it for a reason. I figured that reason was to be able to plug in additional input devices such as, say, a Magic Trackpad. The more Apple goes with "cool and hip" the more I look for alternatives in the reliable category. *sigh*

cool, but no wacom replacement

I've not actually owned a mouse for about ten years now. Ever since using a wacom at work I use that instead as it speeds up your work flow massively.

This pad does look great, but I've been using a wacom bamboo that works as a graphics tablet (obviously!) and a touch pad for the last year. So unless they release a version with pressure sensitivity and a pen for graphic work I'll have to resist. No room for two tablets on my desk!

I also really HATE the fact that they only released a wireless version. Considering this will probably get the most use ON a desk, what is the need for wireless? Yeah sure it looks neater, but it's just an added hassle you don't need for it to suddenly run out on you and then you can't use the computer.

Surely they could have added a mini-usb connection on the rear that you could just plug in as another option rather than the waste of using batteries.

Shame. Still, does look ridiculously sexy. So I might have to go into the store to stroke one... or wait to get one in at work :)

Would love to know though, does anyone else on here want a wired version?... or am I one of the minority few who finds wireless just an extra hassle?

I love wireless. Wired is too cluttered and Apple is always going for minimalist look. Less is more to them. They somehow made the iPhone 4 the thinnest smartphone but sold more units than the competition. Less is more. :)

just wanted to add as well, i find track pads a bit annoying on laptops, but that's mainly down to the inaccuracies cased by the scale of them.

Trust me on this one, give a large track pad a try and you'll be surprised how much quicker you can do things and it does brake down the barriers of feeling disconnected from the machine as you do with a mouse (anyone who's used an iPad will get what I mean here)... hope that makes sense, can't really explain it very well! But try it and you'll see what I mean ;)

do you not find you unexpectedly run out of batteries at the most inconvenient times though? And the effort of recharging them just seems an unnecessary pain in the reartunnel to me. I do agree with you on looks though, specially for a mouse that moves around, but the track pad would be pretty much stationery like a keyboard.

Must just be me then ;)

I can't remember the last time I had to change my wireless keyboard's batteries. Or my Magic Mouse. I do agree with you on the trackpad being stationary. But wireless gives you more freedom to move it wherever you want to. And since Apple is really good at power management, I probably won't have to change the batteries more than once every few months. Also, there will be warnings that pop up on the screen when the batteries are low or about to die. It's not suddenly out of battery without you knowing at all.

Try doing Photoshop work with a freaking trackpad. Yeah, the mouse's days are numbered alright. Swipe gestures are nice on Apple's trackpads, but otherwise, the things are a PITA, IMO. You can pry my 5-button high resolution ergonomic optical mouse (with gel wrist rest mouse pad for ergonomic comfort) from my cold dead hands. No trackpad can replace it. It would be better to have a little trackpad on a new keyboard for gestures and leave the mouse for the real tracking work.

Trackpad use

After using a Magic Trackpad for a few hours, I can say that it is much more comfortable than the trackpad on the laptop, because of the difference in size.

It feels very accurate and natural. Some gestures seem more accurate (like rotate and pinch) than the trackpads on the Macbook.

Drivers are out. For Mac, only 10.6.4 support - nothing for 10.5.8. But Win XP has driver support. C'mon Apple, you'll support someone else's 10 year old OS, but not your own previous version.

WELL , YOU JUST LOST MY BUSINESS!

Nice! I was worried that it was only tap which I HATE and never use, but it does click with the bottom front feet so this might be nice :) I think I would actually rather use this than a mouse for casual things, but for serious video editing and work like photoshopping I'd still prefer a mouse!

I'm excited to try it out at the Apple store :)
