Look at the apps on other iOS devices. Are they all the same? No.

What are you talking about? All the video apps I have used on iOS, the play button plays the video, the pause button pauses it.

Also, as far as I know, people do not use IR remotes with their iOS devices, other than airplay of course. Although I might be wrong about that.

When using airplay on iOS to play a video to your ATV, the IR buttons are standard. Just not tvOS.

What I was getting at is not all iOS apps are exactly alike. Devs have some freedom in how they are designed. That means on the ATV 4 you are not going to have all apps exactly alike.

If you have an issue with how a particular app works, contact the dev. I'm positive that will do way more than arguing about it here.

I've done that many times and seen results.

I am not arguing, I am just answering your posts. The issues of the ATV4 are greater than just the IR remote, although I think most of them will be fixed. Hopefully the worst ones will be in this upcoming update.

From what I notice, the number one complaint about it so far is the audio bug. Which is pretty annoying, and I hope this get fixed right way.

The issues with the siri remote are more of a subjective thing. Some people like the new design, but I do not. I had a feeling I wasn't going to like it when it was announced.

The UI of the video apps may fall on the developers, but this is also Apple's problem because if people don't like the apps, why would they buy the product?

I'm still scratching my head why they actually included a charging cable for the remote, but it's not USB-C where you can actually plug it into the ATV. I'd like to just leave the cable plugged in and wrapped behind my ATV and retrieve it when my remote needs charging.

I'm quite happy with their choice since I have a spare cable to power all my Apple devices via the standard usb. I was about to buy a new but I waited to have it for "free" with the new Apple TV.
The remote is not meant to be charged by the Apple TV, the battery lasts so long you don't have to worry about it, every other month you just plug it to a PC/Mac or to the wall and you're done

I feel your pain.

People might think that I am Apple bashing, but I am not. I am an Apple fan, and have been since the 90s, but I will tell people when I think Apple has done something wrong. It seems like lately, it is happening more and more.

I have purchased a few dozen of Apple products over the years, but I have only returned one before. The first intel Mac mini. It was also plagued with problems.

I will probably not return my ATV4, because I think a lot of the problems will be fixed. Well, hopefully.
i agree, i think complaining and complaining about things because they aren't launched the same day as the device is ridiculous. Go enjoy life and in some time the remote app and other small details will be added and more. Im not losing sleep over not having these features. The world isn't going to end. people just like bitching. early adopters tend to deal with all the problems with many many products.

So something will be updated in 9.1 :)

I've been using plex on mine and it's been a great experience.

Two weeks in I've decided to keep it, though not fond of the new remote, in the dark I cannot tell which is the touch pad and which is then back cause the buttons are in the middle, the old remote was a much better design.

I have mixed feeling about the remote. The bluetooth is a great upgrade compared to the infra red of the old one; some times felt like a sniper aiming for the ATV. The buttons and touch pad are hard to distinguish and I often touch the touch pad unintendedly pausing the movie or jump back in the menu. Apple should be able to do better then this.

I find it funny that people complain so much about Apple TV remote. The reason I want to switch to Apple TV from the Fire TV is that the new 4k Fire TV's remote is an absolute disaster. All I care about for the new Apple TV remote is does the motion gaming (wii style) work well with the remote? That's how I'm justifying it to the wife, that my toddler will love the motion games.

You are setting yourself up for years of your wife telling 'told you so' . The ATV has great potential, the remote being the worst part of it. Looks great when you read about it and see it in pictures, though in practice poor design. You have to give it a few weeks of missing buttons, and accidently scrolling through movies to appreciate what is wrong with it .

I'll be honest, i have not even tried gaming on it . Unlike the wii remote, if you are going to have kids use it , be prepared to replace many, the glass is really easy to break, reading MR forums. If it was plastic, sure.

Maybe they make a case for the remote to keep it from breaking? lol...

That is a major upgrade case design etc.

As for the need for cable it's because this is the Beta. I am sure the final will be over the air.

Just gonna play devil's advocate: why not have a major upgrade case design? With MacBooks Airs & Pros, USB-C is way smaller & thinner than USB-A, and we all know Apple's love affair with thin. Plus, with Skylake out, and Apple's buying power, Apple probably could have put USB-C (if not TB3) into new devices already.

For the cable, I get that, but why not make it the same cable as previous AppleTVs?

While it has some similarities between the Wii remote, in my experience it is not the same.

This might change as more games come out, but the games that use motion-style control on the ATV4 feel a little sloppy.

Even when the Wii frost came out the all the games took advantage of the Wii motion controller and with a few exceptions, it felt solid.

As more games come out for the ATV4, I think this will improve, but right now it is definitely not a Wii.

I didn't necessarily say that every problem I listed was Apple's fault. The poster asked me about what problems were on the ATV4, and I responded..... See:

But, for your comment, it is Apple's product. If they have the best TV box in the world, but the UI sucks for all their apps, then it is Apple's problem.

It may not be Apple's fault, but it is their problem. If the apps suck, why get the product? For the wonderful home screen?

The product seems unfinished. I just hope that 9.1 fixes some of the issues, especially the audio bug.

I am not alone in the disappointment in the ATV4 so far. Check out the many other threads and posts about the issues.

Audio is okay. You are alone on disarmament.

Have you played the Beat Sports? That's the one I'm currently interested in that he'd like. I don't want to buy an old wii for him to play these kinds of things when the Apple TV can do a close facsimile.

I haven't played, but I might end up buying to check it out.

Maybe after my kids get done their homework, I might buy it and see how they like it.

I'm aware of that . When I pick it up, I put my thumb on the glass, or what I think is the glass.

I doubt the user journey is to pick it up, fondle the buttons in the middle and work out which is the touch pad.

To be honest I can just use a torch..... Still a bad design though . The old remote as soon as you picked up you knew which end you were holding

I had the same issue in the first couple of days and I'm not saying it couldn't be more obvious or even better. My big problem is forgetting Siri is awesome. I just caught myself launching search and starting to peck out Manhattan.

According to Jason Snell there are no plans for a remote app. Makes sense... there is no use case for a remote app beyond first-time one-time setup, especially if you want users to adopt Siri as the interface.

I have no idea why you would return the Apple TV, now that it supports iTunes USA, Netflix Nordic, HBO Nordic, Al Jazeera (which is arabic for cable-free CNN) and NRK, I unplugged the cable box and never use Smart TV to get HBO anymore. Oh, and it supports Airplay to the stereo beautifully.

I probably won't return it. But, I can understand why some people would. They are not cheap, and the ATV3 does many things that the ATV4 does. In many ways, I like the UI on ATV3 better.

I have the same issue with the remote in the dark. How about taping a little bead or bar on one end of the back? Then you would be able to feel which way is up.

Also turn mine wrong way sometimes xD BUT the good thing is, rough on the trackpad :) and glossy between menu button, siri and volume. And so on xD

It's also hard as f to pick up off a flat surface (tabletop). And every time I do so, I inadvertently cause touch input. I seriously HATE the remote. I feel like Apple put aesthetics *way* ahead of usability here.

This is so true. There has been many times that I have accidentally fast forward or RR the show I was watching just by picking it up.

I am sure someone will reply saying that I am doing it wrong or whatever, so, I am not saying that it is impossible to pick it up without doing this. The design of the remote makes it easy to inadvertently press the touch pad. Especially when picking it up.

When the ATV4 was announced, I had a feeling that I was not going to like the remote. I was very happy to find out that you could still use any IR remote like the ATV3. Only to be disappointed that there is no standard for the IR remote and the play, pause, select buttons do not always play, pause, and select on the video apps.

a tip I just read: press the menu button to undo an accidental scrubbing
