This had a ton of potential. I was hoping that DirecTV Now would integrate with the service, putting the shows themselves front and center and getting rid of their cluttered interface (which focuses on channels or networks). I was also hoping that other third-party apps like CBS, The CW, ABC, and Fox would integrate with this app, allowing the free content they offer to be displayed through the app.
However, so far after testing, most of them do NOT integrate with the new TV app without having a traditional, paying cable subscription, even though all of these third-party apps offer all of their premium shows eight days after air for free (with commercials) in the apps themselves...
Hulu and The CW appear to be some of the only services that integrate with it now, which is next to useless since I cancelled my Hulu subscription in favor of DirecTV Now.
So if you don't have a traditional cable subscription (which excludes DirecTV Now) and you also don't have Hulu - this new TV app is next to useless for you.
Sad. What a huge missed opportunity. Neither Apple nor DirecTV can't seem to get it quite right. I want DirecTV Now's content offerings using Apple's interface that puts the shows front and center instead of the networks. I also want integrated access to local channels through third-party apps. Lastly, I wish DirecTV Now what extend its 72 hour rewind featured to be a week and make it available across all networks and all channels.
