I wish I was surprised, but Apple TV has always been little more than a hobby for Apple. Though, it does sort of boggle the mind that Apple built a “pro” feature primarily for people to watch movies on their phone, all while leaving the TV completely unaddressed.

It’s might be related to the fact that the current Apple TV model was released two years ago. It might be missing some tech required for this to work (ie to let the earbuds know the location of the source device). Or basically lacking the computing power.

My guess is the tech might there (even if it means a new Apple TV model for the readons above). But it’s actually more complex since Apple TV never sits in the middle of the screen, but below/to the side (or even behind the viewer, with a beamer) and with big screen TV the effect simply does not work. There would need to be some sort of a calibrating process to let the buds know what is the relative position of the source of sound (ATV) to the screen (TV/beamer) so the sound can be positioned properly.

Correct, spatial audio isn’t supported on the Apple TV.

While ATV has not gotten the attention other devices get, and does appear to be a bit of a hobby, they may have decided not that many people use AirPods with an ATV. A subset of those who would want spatial audio probabaly already have a sound setup that provides multi channel sound withtheir TV setup.

I think Apple's move to more gaming may yet breath life into the ATV, as it can provide the same gaming expereince as an iPhone/iPAd.

Perhaps I’m in the minority, but I don’t think I’ve ever watched a movie on my iPhone. Maybe an iPad. But I’d really prefer to watch a movie on the TV. Weird, I know. :p

Same hear, although my iPad Pro is what I use while traveling.

Good points; although it is a bit odd that iPhone 7's are supported and the 4K ATV uses the same one. It would seem both would have the power.

That seems more likely, IMHO. Calibrations would require some sort of setup, and even then the user would not always be in the same spatial location as they would with an iPhone or iPad. Even if you airplay the video it stil is likely infront of you or youcan simply lay the device in front of you to get the same effect.

From that perspective, not including it in the ATV makes sense since the user experience could be disorienting and poor.

I believe it’s just s temporary setback, but time will tell. I’m not planning to buy an ATV until a new model comes out anyway 😉

I believe the issue with YouTube 4K def lies with google for both the TV and the iOS devices. Obviously google has not updated the app yet for appleTV so we’ll have to wait.
However, the app on iOS14 has been updated and does play 4K, with an exception. For some reason only certain videos show up with the options, even though they have 4K version when viewed from a desktop browser. Either google is blocking these for the YouTube iOS app or the content creators have a toggle to enable viewing the higher resolutions on mobile devices.
I’m not a content creator so I have no clue. All I know is I have a very small handful of videos I have seen on my iPhone 11 Pro Max in actual 4K. The rest just show up to 1080p.

So I just checked. And filed feedback to Apple.

On iOS. You get 4K playback only if its 4K HDR through the YouTube app. Via the VP9 codec. Normal 4K you are limited to 1080p.

VP9 is definitely on iOS. Just don’t know what’s up with normal 4K or Safari

Safari seems to have no exposed VP9 codec support. So you maxed out there as well.

AppleTV has jack. Still limited to 1080p. Don’t think they would announce it as a flag pole feature to tvOS just to backtrack due to power concerns. The AppleTv doesn’t have any power efficiency concerns. So even if the codec is processed in Software. Who cares.

I am unable to see 4k youtube neither on ipad pro, nor iphone, nor apple tv. Total BS, I rushed to install new ios just for that...

Look for a 4K HDR video and check again
Care to point me to a link? The ones I tried only show 1080p 60 as maximum res. But anyways even if some of the HDR ones do work, it is still a disappointment. 4K was touted as one of the features I was really looking forward to it.

Wanting to take advantage of HomeKit cameras and get rid of my Amazon Cloud Cams, I'm seeing that HomeKit support is not very common. Eufy has 2K cams that are cheap (ordered a set to try) but Doorbell Cams? Forget it. Nothing but odd-ball brands seem to make a HomeKit Doorbell. The ones that do seem to have heavy compromises.

I like the idea of being able to see my cameras on Apple TV in the Control Center, and Doorbell showing on TV when someone rings it.

Anyone happy with what they have and can suggest something that doesn't cost a 2nd mortgage?

Really hoping developers adopt PIP. Apple should have made this mandatory for TvOS14
Anyone know the ACTUAL Instructions for getting pic-in-pic? I watched a MacRumors video where its mentioned but never how to initiate it?

It’s more than THREE years now.
Where the frak is it?

I’m waiting for either google or apple to actually release their new hardware already, and even then google might kill theirs by not supporting Ethernet, and apple might kill theirs by doing something screwy with remote control support.

Still seeing users reporting no YouTube 4K after the tvOS 14 release. I’m going to hold off on purchasing until I see a critical mass of users confirm that it works.

These videos can be played at 1440p on android devices. So I think it’s something at Google’s end.

It’s absolutely ridiculous. After promising 4K YouTube videos finally, it doesn’t work on either of my iPads and on my iPhone it only works with 4K showcase videos. So completely pointless.
