Apple today released tvOS 16.2, the second major update to the tvOS 16 operating system that initially debuted in September. tvOS 16.2 comes more than a month after the release of tvOS 16.1, an update that introduced Siri improvements and iCloud Shared Photo Library.

The tvOS 16.2 update can be downloaded over the air through the Settings app on the ‌‌‌‌Apple TV‌‌‌‌ by going to System > Software Update. ‌‌‌‌Apple TV‌‌‌‌ owners who have automatic software updates turned on will be upgraded to ‌tvOS 16.2 automatically. tvOS 16.2 is compatible with Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD models.

tvOS 16.2 adds support for Apple Music Sing, the new karaoke feature designed to let Apple Music subscribers with an Apple TV sing along to their favorite songs, solo or in duets. Apple Music Sing is compatible with the third-generation Apple TV 4K, which is the newest model.

The update adds Apple TV+ previews, displaying videos of new Apple TV+ shows and films in the Originals tab, plus it tweaks the main TV app interface, moving down the "Watch Now" bar in favor of content previews.

Apple says that tvOS 16.2 provides video recommendations on what to watch next after you finish a show or movie, plus it introduces a new unified sports experience. You can follow your favorite teams in the Apple TV app and automatically have news on those teams show up in Apple News.

Apple provides additional details on tvOS releases in its dedicated tvOS support document, which is updated after each new iteration of tvOS.

So far, few of the more recent songs I’ve added to my library have the “adjustable vocals” feature part of Apple Music Sing. Some, but not all, have the updated Live Lyrics.

Example: Some of Kendrick Lamar’s new album has updated Live Lyrics, but not adjustable vocals. Some songs have adjustable vocals, but not updated Live Lyrics.

Really do not like the new "up next" view as of tvOS 16. I preferred the old way (though I wish it wouldn't do it at all) of showing the next episode in a small window, instead of minimizing the *still playing* episode to show me a giant still of the next one. Baffling regression, and there's no option to turn it off.

Now this update says it comes with up next "recommendations." I don't suppose anyone knows yet if this can be turned off.

It seems like Apple completely forgot that they actually *sell* tv shows and movies. The only thing I watch in the Apple TV app is purchased TV shows and movies, and they keep making the experience worse.

Edit: yeah that giant unremovable banner at the top, another huge one in the middle, ads all over the place.

There is exactly one tiny row (it has been made smaller) of what I actually want to “watch now” and the rest of the entire page is an animated banner ad. What the hell is going on at Apple right now? They’ve turned the deceptive design advertisers loose.

The ethernet speed of the 3rd gen Apple TV 4k(2022) with tvOS 16.2 is limited to 100Mbps. I’m not sure if other peoples experience the same issue. I tested the cable and router with a laptop but all work fine except for the Apple TV. I remember it supported 1Gbps when I got it a month ago.

Yeah I don't care for Apple over emphasizing Apple TV app functionality versus other streaming apps for everything. It evident this app is far from perfect because the iTunes Movies and TV shows apps are still offered. I 'd actually like it to loose features then try to band-aid too much.

Far and away the biggest update is the HomeKit architecture update, but no lets pretend that pseudo karaoke is the headline feature.

It is perfect as far as Apple is concerned. It is doing exactly what they want it to. Not what any sane wants it to do, but they stopped caring about that a long time ago.

Yuck

I hate this too.

Also.. in the UK at least... I have a movie that is on NOW..... I just pressed play and it tried to get me to subscribe to Paramount+ (another service that has the same movie).
However, I don't have paramount+.... I don't need paramount+.... TV knows that I have NOW and its connected to the TV app.
I now have to press and hold... view details... scroll down to how to watch, then find NOW.

Huge bug surely?

If it's a bug it's been around since at least iOS 14, or whatever year they took The Office off Netflix. I bought it when it was on sale. For a brief time, it worked pretty well, but then Peacock launched and now it wants me to view it on Peacock, which I don't subscribe to or even have installed.

Even worse, the two part episodes were sold as one long episode, but they don't exist that way on Peacock. So now if I finish one of the two parters, it completely breaks the up next functionality, because it thinks the next episode is the 30 minute version on Peacock and completely ignores the fact that the *actual* next episode is the one hour version in my library.

Same for Bob's Burgers. Bought the whole series (at the time) and every time I finish an episode, if I just tap watch it opens in Hulu, despite the fact that I own the episode, and the last episode came from my library and not from Hulu.

They're pushing far too much to the growth and engagement angle and forgetting their best customers. Not a good sign.

The new home app architecture should take care of that.
Sure hope so. I narrowed it down that my HomePod mini is the source of all evil when it comes to the hub. I ended up unplugging it and just leaving the Apple TV as the main hub and its been solid for a week. I hate that apple does not let you set the default hub

Wish they would not force me to view adds in the new AppleTV app revision.

Hmm. Doesn’t seem to honor the setting to switch between “up next” and “what to watch” on the top of the TV app? Now it just shows “what to watch” items in the big top image area? Bug.
That setting only applies to the main Home Screen when you highlight the ATV app while it’s in the Top Shelf.

Yes, but it used to also change the behavior inside the TV app as well. In fact, the setting remains in the appropriate place (the TV App settings, not general) but no longer functions in the expected way.

Furthermore, when in the TV App and scrolling through the now mandatory What to Watch ads at the top it has several fantom click stops where it makes the sound but the image doesn’t change.

Clearly the TV app is not finished. These are pretty obvious bugs.

No way... they straight up took out Up Next from the Home page??.. that was one of my favorite features since upgrading my Apple TV... is there no option to put it back?
No it’s still there, there’s always been an option to choose between Up Next and What To Watch.

Settings > Apps > TV.

I don’t ever recall it being a changeable option within the ATV app, for me at least Up Next has always shown a screenshot of the next episode/movie regardless of the setting used.
It’s only ever changed the behaviour of the Home Screen on both my Apple TVs.

ATV is great, best apple product for the money.
i like the 4K screensavers, Apple Music losless and setting ATV as a Homekit control center. HDR and Dolby Atmos run perfect on my first gen 4K ATV - why should i upgrade?
Zwift is great and cheaper compared to any other platttform.
The rest of Apps i dont care
but thats only me

Here same ATV on 16.2 it's fine, pretty much saturating the ethernet at ~940Mb/s both locally (Infuse) and on the Speedtest.net app with my gigabit internet.
