I actually shut off auto-update on my Apple TV before it updated itself to 16.2 -- because this all sounds really ****ty. I'll update eventually if there's some feature I can't live without or something breaks.

Yeah, I hate to say it but I wish I’d opted not to update to 16.2 generally. It isn’t just the ATV that has… issues.

Apple is in a cycle we’ve seen before. They rush ahead with new features while allowing partially implemented or broken ones to lie fallow. It’s extremely frustrating.

Not seeing any improvements and many of my settings have reset… it has logged out additional users, switched the HomePods to only playing Apple TV audio and not the TV’s audio (arc) etc…

The setting only functions properly if you have Apple TV+

Convenient
Eh in what way, it’s always worked fine for me without an ATV+ sub.

But it isn’t. Even if you subscribe to ATV+ the behavior of the TV app is still broken.
It’s not broken and works as intended, you do know it’s only for the Homescreen right?
That Top Shelf function is even labelled Homescreen under the ATV settings menu.

Wow. Let’s go over this AGAIN.

I’m not talking about the Home Screen. I’m talking about the AppleTV APP. The top banner behavior has changed. You used to be able to choose between “up next” and “what to watch.” That is no longer the case.

Furthermore, among other issues, it IS buggy. There are (for example) fantom stops on that new top banner in the ATV app.

I’ve detailed all this already. I’m not sure why we’re doing a reset on a thread that’s so short.

In the APP, not the Home Screen.
You can put all the angry faces and the use of capital letters all you like Lol that function has NEVER worked in the app, was NEVER intended to work in the app, it’s ALWAYS only EVER worked on the main Home Screen.

Before now inside the app it’s only been Up Next bring the first thing you see, What To Watch has never been an option instead of Up Next within the app itself.
Granted there may very well have been such a function during a beta release(I never used the beta so cannot confirm either way) but it’s never been so with the official software realeases.

You obviously don’t have the first clue what you’re taking about.

The app certainly has had a redesign (for the worse). But I don't think you could ever configure the app layout, only what gets rolled up to the home screen.

Perhaps someone still on 16.1 can confirm.

Maybe not. Regardless, the app is a mess. The new top banner is user hostile, the banner scroll has phantom click stops, the text below the thumbnails in “up next” fail to re-render and double up when you scroll them… Clearly the TV app is 1) worse and 2) buggy. Shame on Apple for releasing this garbage.

Well that is truly disappointing to hear.

Agree. I had high hopes for it.

Now, that said, I suppose I can give Apple the benefit of the doubt and suggest that maybe this is groundwork that will be built upon in future updates, but as far as the initial release goes it’s pretty shaky.

Indeed you’ve never been able to.
The toggle was added to the TV app settings in tvOS 13.3 after Apple decided to remove Up Next from the Homescreen’s Top Shelf completely and replaced with the What To Watch Trailers, probably thought we didn’t need Up Next in two places so removed it.
Loads of complaints so they put it back and gave us the choice of what we’d prefer.

The issue is the messed up TV App’s interface both from a usability perspective and from a simple functionality perspective. Not only has it been changed for the worse on that top banner but the app itself is rife with bugs. It isn’t finished and Apple shouldn’t have released it.

The Apple TV apps garbage and always has been, the only time it ever comes in handy is for Up Next letting me know when there’s a new episode available from one of my connected services.

It’s going to be a sad day when the Movies and TV Shows apps get retired.

Yep, and it’s true. I have a lot of devices (70-80 I think?) on HomeKit and 16.2 upgrade didn’t do anything positive for them, and made some things noticeably worse. I’m still in disbelief I can’t specify which Apple TV is the home hub anymore. Just unforgivable.
