I have the Betas on my ATV and iPad. Can't use FaceTime with my iPad 7.
My ATV is the previous one where 64 GB was the max.

Is FaceTime on by default, or does it need to be enabled? I personally don't want it on my AppleTV that's used by other family members...will they get alerts for incoming calls I receive? That would be really annoying. I assume it can be switched off?

Here is the press release from Apple. It only works with 4K second gen and later. it says this:

Through the powerful integration of hardware and software, Apple TV 4K becomes an even more versatile living room device with the launch of FaceTime on tvOS 17 today, bringing new ways to connect with family and friends. *1

*1 Applies to Apple TV 4K (2nd and 3rd generations).

And this feature only works with the latest, 3rd gen ATV 4K:

Interactivity with Apple Music Sing and Continuity Camera

allows users to see themselves onscreen and add entertaining filters as they sing along to their favorite tracks. *2

2 Applies to Apple TV 4K (3rd generation); Apple Music subscription required.

Ah. Gutted. My 4K doesn’t support FaceTime. The one feature I was looking forward to.
Is there no way to sync icon layouts between multiple AppleTV’s in the house so the home screens are the same or do I have to manually move all the icons individually?

Facetime on TV is great idea but seems it will be awkward to use in practice.
I would use it not as "traditional" facetime but to share group situations. For example set it up at a family event (Christmas, Thanksgiving, Wedding, whatever) and other people can be somewhat part of the event in a way that's more "public" than a phone FaceTime call.

At least, IMHO, that's how I would construct the ad and optimize the feature...

As long as I can still AirPlay FaceTime from my phone to the my AppleTV 4K 1st gen... I'm fine. I don't really see a benefit to having the app on the AppleTV itself.

I have the FaceTime App on my Apple TV HD, and the most recent 4K one, but not the older gen 4K models. Weird. Also, my remotes are connecting to the Apple TV HD and the newest 4K model but not the others. I tried repairing, won't even work. Things are charged. Very strange.
Is FaceTime working on your Apple TV HD model? They’re saying it’s only for the newer 4K models….

Does the caller also need to have iOS 17 for this to work on the ATV?

And related, if I update the TV but can’t update my phone to iOS 17, will Homekit sill work properly?

So wait let me get this straight, they're releasing iOS 17 for my Apple TV HD released in 2015 and yet my iPhone 8 Plus released in 2017 and my gf iPhone SE released in 2016 does not get an update?
Come on man!😝
I guess you could allege planned obsolescence, hire a lawyer, and maybe force Apple to update your 2017 iPhone. Might be worth a try.

My TV has been updating for over an hour, install seems to be stuck with the progress bar almost full…

EDIT: seems to be a common issue with the tvOS 17.0 installation. Press and hold the back and TV buttons on the remote and the TV will reboot and properly finish installing

Now that the update is out, all of my icons are much smaller on my 40” TV. Does anyone know of a setting where you can switch it back to five icons per line so that I can actually see them.
