I see my remote firmware version as 0x0060. I wonder what it will be after the update or if it already updated.

Mine still doesn’t like to manage the volume on my Sonos Playbar. It works 50% of the time after 10 clicks to 1 blink of acknowledgment.
Yep.. same for me on a Vizio soundbar. I have to click like crazy to get it to work.

So I plugged in my Siri remote when I noticed it was low on battery and charged it for 15 minutes. After I unplugged my remote, it was non-functional on my Apple TV 4K. Fortunately the Remote app on my iPhone work just fine so I restarted my Apple TV, yet my remote was still non-functional. So I reset my Remote and it worked again. Found out it had been updated to firmware version 0x0061. Although I hear that's not the real version.

Haha, firmware update for a rather standard remote, how far have we come....

Could be worse though, firmware for a drinking bottle, or a toothbrush.
It's not a rather standard remote though. The top wheel is actually a fully capable multitouch trackpad. This makes the remote also a great control for macOS when using apps like BetterTouchTool that let you configure it.

This may be unrelated but I believe that the remote uses radio to communicate with the ATV and IR to communicate with the Sonos so you have to precisely aim it.

I find it doesn't work at all unless I go into my settings on my ATV and then set my output to the Sonos using AirPlay, then it works. I have to do that each time though.

In the end I just created a shortcut that on my phone that turns on the ATV and opens Netflix (or Spotify), then opens the Sonos app on my phone, then opens the ATV interface on top. That way the ATV interface is ready on the phone but I can just switch to the Sonos app in background and it's ready too.

It’s too bad they couldn’t update the looks with firmware.

Hideous remote. Ugliest ever.

Mine says 0x0061. Not sure what is was.
That looks suspiciously like a Microsoft crash code!
One of the things I currently love about Apple is that I can just leave my devices alone and they update themselves. I’m not concerned about having the latest firmware update because by when I used to look, everything was already updated. I know it will be the same with my Apple TV Remote.
I disabled that on all of my Apple devices. Too many stories of bricked iPhones and iPads.
It’s like a horror movie in here when I have to update the firmware on my Hue lights.
Not looking forward to the day I have to update my washer, dryer, garage door opener, irrigation system, alarm system, smoke alarms, 12 security cameras, and air conditioner. And my pool pump, fridge, and oven are all very old, so one of those is due for an upgrade next, I’m sure.

Reads first sentence: No wonder this **** sucks, somehow I’m way behind and still on 0x0060.

Reads second sentence: Just think how worse other remotes are.

The article states that the FW version listed in ATV settings is not the same as the one Apple released. SMH that you apparently didn’t read that.

“The new firmware has an internal version number of 9M6772, while the prior firmware version was 9M6336. Note that this is not the firmware version that you see in the Apple TV Remote settings.”

9M6336 doesn’t look anything like 0x0060, so finding the FW listing in the ATV settings doesn’t help one know whether the newest FW has been installed.

Plus, finding which FW is installed is one thing, discovering how to install an update is something totally different.
The firmware version in Remote settings changes to 0x0061, after updating. SMH that you didn’t know what you were talking about, but, presented your feelings as fact.
Finding 0x0061 listed in the ATV settings, does let one know the firmware has been updated.
Listening to others is one thing…thinking for yourself…is another.

Not surprising since all these controls are software based, so of course those types of light switches and light bulbs have firmware that can be updated.

That said, this is why I don’t go for fancy lights and switches. I want simple products to just work with no fuss and no need to think about them.

and overnight it went from 0x0060 to 0x0061, so guess that correlates with the article's numbers but what does it all mean🤔

Ok, so another user gave me the solution:

you have to teach the Apple TV what the IR commands are for your particular sound bar. It's a very unintuitive process, but it does work:

- open settings
- Go to Remotes and Devices, then under the heading Home Cinema Control you will find Volume Control
- Open this setting and press "Learn New Device"
- now use the remote that came with your sound bar to "teach" the Apple TV the IR commands.

Save the settings and then try again. Your Siri Remote should know now how to control the Sound bar.
