Ok-- as much as I'd like to wait for a 13" with i3, I'm going to school in August and need to get this update.
which begs the question, does anyone know how soon are they available in store? :)
thank you!

If you're studying in August, you don't need to buy in April...

price is a bit of a shocker - expensive laptops again.

I guess it's the mac vs. pc debate again.

Actually it's cheaper the 512GB SSD is $1300 and the 8GB DDR3 Memory is $400 that's about the same price Crucial charges for it's 8GB Kit. The Only 512GB SSD is Toshiba - Super Talent and it's $1817.99 on Amazon. Also the Crucial 8GB Memory Kit is on Amazon also. The prices are way better than last year prices. I seen people get a viruses still with a 64-bit Windows 7. Apple may cost more but for a piece of mind its worth it. To me Microsoft represents chaos and uncertainty and Apple represents peace and tranquility. :D

Is there a difference between the i7 and i5 beyond the 0,13GHz?

The differences are:

i7 Benchmark by Intel
3.06 GHz, 2.93 GHz, and 2.66 GHz core speed
8 processing threads with Intel® HT technology
8 MB of Intel® Smart Cache
3 Channels of DDR3 1066 MHz memory

i5 Benchmark by Intel
2.66 GHz and up to 3.20 GHz with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology
4 processing threads
8 MB of Intel® Smart Cache
2 channels of DDR3 1333 MHz memory

We are in different times, the Giga Hertz are not the main feature you should look at. Now there are other factors more important that improves the chip performance and consumption.

... you cant even see 1080p on a 15" screen. there is no difference to the human eye.

If your 15" screen is 3 metres away - true.

When you're 40cm from the screen while at the laptop, the apparent size is bigger than a 50" screen on the wall. That's definitely in the "notice the 1080p difference" range.

Look at http://www.hdtvsolutions.com/HDTV_Viewing_Distance.htm for a thorough discussion of apparent size and viewing distance. The basic rule is that your viewing distance should be 1.3 to 2 times the screen diagonal for 1080p.

Yikes.. pretty lame update here. I'm really surprised at Apple. Typically, their updates put them at a competitive level. This should be a macbook update not a Macbook "PRO" update. Can we still call them pro machines? No.

Yes the Dell comparison is inevitable, and I should shutup etc yah yah. But have you guys looked at it? Say a Studio XPS 16? The specs absolutely squash the MBP high end 15".

Couple things that surprise me about this update.
No 720QM... just 720M. Remember that's dual core not quad core.
DDR3 @ 1066mhz instead of the current standard of 1333mhz.
No USB3.. it's out now so stop making excuses for Apple. Asus has it.
16x10 instead of 16x9. Again, no excuses here. 16x9 is better in so many ways.

Feels like this update is perfect.. if we're talking 6 months ago. I would urge you guys not to spend the $1000+ price premium over superior notebooks.. Of course none of the competition has that amazing trackpad or unibody structure (don't say the Envy.. it's terrible). I believe paying a price premium for Apple products is fine, and I'd do it for sure.. just not at $1000+ for lesser hardware.

I've waited a LONG time but I'll pass on this. :/

Thanks. Now move along.

I'd like to bring up a minor point. If they're still selling Core 2 Duo today, expect our already ancient Core 2 Duo hardware to be supported for some time longer.

Don't forget, it makes the insecure buyers who bought last month feel better about their purchases as well.

Apple is more interested in an increase in battery life than a dramatic increase in performance by offering a Clarksfield. I do remember mentioning faster dual cores and longer battery life as Apple's obsession. What am I supposed to do with the extra 5 hours of life that I don't need? It doesn't make my computer faster.

Agreed! Apple wants you to use that extra 5 hours of battery life waiting for a video to encode, or a movie to export, or filters to apply in Photoshop.

That is of course, if people still pay $2300+ for a machine that does actual work.

All in all, it makes it easier to for people to buy used, and get a machine that's not much slower than the current models.

If you honestly expected either of those features I'd say you need a serious reality check.

"WTF Apple didn't include a cure for cancer? NO BUY."

Talk about a over exaggeration...

Very true. The fanboys are always pulling out the old "no cure for cancer" garbage. But I suppose they're nothing if not dismally, blandly, and pathetically consistent.

It is so so sad.

I would have been an first-time Mac buyer, I have waited since November for a Macbook Pro 13" Update and now this ****** crap.

I am very disappointed, I have waited too long and I need a new laptop. Apple forces me now to buy a PC because I can't wait for another update circle. What a f****** crappy company. Lost a new customer right now!

Feel your pain, bro. But I couldnt go back to windows. The digital radiography software in my surgery means that i'm confronted with w7 every day and i'm ready to go back to dark-room development just to avoid using it.

For anyone who has already bought the new mbp. Can you tell me what your delivery date is? I'm flying out on wendesday and I would like to have it with me. But if delivery dates are on the 21 or later I have to wait till I get home to order :/

No QUAD CORE i7?????

Wow, that's really a let down. I was hoping to get the same performance as the iMac Quad Core i7, nothing. It's still a dual core i7...

How come that a 3d / motion graphic artist cannot have a powerful mobile device from apple?

I never said I did. I just said that I was not unrealistic of me to expect a 1080p display on a 15" MBP when Sony is putting a 1080p display in their 13" Vaio Z.

I hate to burst your bubble, but Sony is not putting a 1080p display in a 13" Vaio.

Directly From Sony's website:

13.1" Screen
1600 x 900 Resolution
LED Backlight

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs...0151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644570897

If it was 1080p, it Would be 1080 instead of 900 resolution height.

A 1080p display in a 13" laptop would be practically illegible. The text would be beyond tiny.

inertial scrolling?

Does anyone think there will be a software update for the previous unibody MBP's for inertial scrolling? I dig that feature on the magic mouse!!

It's funny to read all of the bitching and complaining about the updates, then as people start receiving their new MBP's, we will have a ton of threads about how amazing and great they are.

People always expect Apple to put out these ground breaking, revolutionary products with every update. The reality is, most updates are just updates. Increase in processor, memory, storage. That's the case with all of their products, computer, iphone, and soon ipad.

People get upset because their expectations are set too high.

That's it. I was going to pick up a refurbish when the new ones came out...buuuut. I can't do it. I'll pick up a new one next month.

Thanks man, so if your not doing anything that requires huge graphical processing like games for example.. does it automaticaly switch to the intel intergrated one?

I am not sure exactly how the technology has been intregrated into the Mac system... It works on the principles you've described...when you need graphical processing power, it's available, but when you don't, you conserve battery power. The 'downside' is that the system has probably been programmed to function based on a list of programs rather than real-time graphic needs (someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I've read.) Basically, the application you're running is either listed as a low or high-demand app... open an app that is high-demand and the 330M is activated, even if you're not doing anything that actually requires that power within it (like if you opened a game but just let it sit there at the menu). Maybe Apple has made improvements on this and that's the reason they're blatently stealing credit from nVidia (Apple's been paranoid about it's "patents" lately, dang!)

3.06 GHz, 2.93 GHz, and 2.66 GHz core speed
8 processing threads with Intel® HT technology

The Core i7-6xxM models are 2 core, 4 thread processors.

Don't forget, it makes the insecure buyers who bought last month feel better about their purchases as well.
It makes me feel even better with my Late 2007 MacBook.

Unless Apple decides to stop supporting the GMA X3100 to just run OS X.

Agreed! Apple wants you to use that extra 5 hours of battery life waiting for a video to encode, or a movie to export, or filters to apply in Photoshop.
5-6 hours of mobile battery life on a notebook is enough for me. I understand the penalties incurred for using the CPU and GPU while on the battery. It's also a MacBook Pro. You don't need to patronize your users. Please, tell me how much faster the Core 2 Duo 2.4 and 2.66 GHz processors are compared to the ones last week. :D

All in all, it makes it easier to for people to buy used, and get a machine that's not much slower than the current models.
Apple appears to be reinforcing the purchase of older or refurbished models given the ho hum updates.
