I was going to get a 13" MacBook Pro, however after this mornings update I will hold off. No need to get another C2D. If it had i3 then I would purchased. I'll probably wait till the Back to School event. Maybe I will upgrade to the 15" but no 13" with that old processor in there.

processor speed

This probably sounds stupid, but how much difference is there between the high end 13" (2.66 C2D, 4gb ram) and the base 15" (2.4 i5, 4gb ram)
I ask because if I got the 13" instead, i could also upgrade the hard drive to 500gb as opposed to 320 on the 15".

I hate to burst your bubble, but Sony is not putting a 1080p display in a 13" Vaio.

Directly From Sony's website:

13.1" Screen
1600 x 900 Resolution
LED Backlight

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs...0151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644570897

If it was 1080p, it Would be 1080 instead of 900 resolution height.

A 1080p display in a 13" laptop would be practically illegible. The text would be beyond tiny.

Vaio Zs with a full 1080p screen do exist, but they're only found in the ungodly expensive pre-configured models. In other countries, its a 100$ BTO option on all models.

The new graphics on the 13" MacBook look to be three times faster than the old 9400M.

The "GeForce 320M" appears to be based upon the GT315 desktop product line because it has 48 processing cores, rather than the desktop GT320 product which has 72 processing cores.

More interestingly, it is integrated. What this means is that NVIDIA have created a new, previously unheralded, chipset to replace the 9400M (and no, this isn't Ion 2 under a different name) with three times as much graphics capability. The 9400M could do 54 GFLOPS of computation, this new chipset could do over 150 GFLOPS depending on operating clock.

The "GeForce 330M" does appear to be based upon the desktop GT330 or even the GT340. I suspect it has 96 processing cores and can do around 300 GFLOPS of computation.

The Core 2 Duos in the 13" MacBook are a let down compared to getting Core i3s or lower-end Core i5s.

There has been too long of a delay in updating the MacBook line - 10 months is a long time in the Intel PC world.

Yikes.. pretty lame update here. I'm really surprised at Apple. Typically, their updates put them at a competitive level. This should be a macbook update not a Macbook "PRO" update. Can we still call them pro machines? No.

Yes the Dell comparison is inevitable, and I should shutup etc yah yah. But have you guys looked at it? Say a Studio XPS 16? The specs absolutely squash the MBP high end 15".

Couple things that surprise me about this update.
No 720QM... just 720M. Remember that's dual core not quad core.
DDR3 @ 1066mhz instead of the current standard of 1333mhz.
No USB3.. it's out now so stop making excuses for Apple. Asus has it.
16x10 instead of 16x9. Again, no excuses here. 16x9 is better in so many ways.

Feels like this update is perfect.. if we're talking 6 months ago. I would urge you guys not to spend the $1000+ price premium over superior notebooks.. Of course none of the competition has that amazing trackpad or unibody structure (don't say the Envy.. it's terrible). I believe paying a price premium for Apple products is fine, and I'd do it for sure.. just not at $1000+ for lesser hardware.

I've waited a LONG time but I'll pass on this. :/

My thoughts exactly. If I'm going to pay one of the highest prices for a notebook on the laptop market (including PCs), I expect it to be completely leading-edge. This thing is called the Macbook Pro but it's taken 6 months to get Nehalem. I expect it'll be at least another 6 months before we can even start contemplating QM, USB 3.0 and 1333Mhz. It's ridiculous, really.

There will be a slew of fanboys flooding to the defence of Apple with 'eeh but look at the extra support you get' and 'it's worth it because it's a Mac'. If you are 15 year old kid who got a crap load of birthday money, fine, splurge it on a MBP. But if you are the PRO in the Macbook Pro name and you're running a business and you have any financial sense at all you will understand why the Pro line is becoming exceedingly frustrating. Think about it logically - would you spend an extra $1000 on an OS and a trackpad? Because that's basically what you're paying for here.

Well duhhhhh...

The 1080p display in the Vaio Z is a BTO.

Hmm..

I have a macbook rev 1,1 from 2006. I use photoshop a lot.

I've been waiting for the upgrade like everyone else but sadly I was weak and instead of waiting like a good boy I went and bought a new camera, then I bought a new BMW, then I bought an ipad, this week I bought a new projector...

So today the rumors finally came true. I'm underwhelmed with the 13 but it's a big leap from my macbook so I should probably go for it. Just one problem... how do I explain major purchase no 5 to my wife?

nope win 7 is best. sorry
It's a matter of choice. OSX for me is better than win 7 for a number of reasons. If you are happy with windoze, there's no reason to buy a MBP. You will find great (and cheaper) notebooks from other vendors...

I feel a bit dissapointed for two reasons:

1) My 13" MacBook Pro is no longer "new." I love it all the same, but these updates really rub it in.

2) A more justifiable reason: Apple is making it even more blaringly obvious how the 13" is still really just a glorified MacBook. It doesn't have the same graphics, processor family, or even display options(no anti-glare). Yeah, that list isnt that long, but theyre important.

Beyond that complaint, I think the upgrade was great. The new 15" & 17" look phenomenal, and the 13" will be a good laptop for consumers.

13" MPB - higher education discount (including free 3-year warranty) = £858.93

SOLD

@iFaerie, if you're going to college/university in August I suggest you wait until you get there before buying, I'm saving £140 by buying through my uni, £100 more than the standard education discount. Your school will most likely also make you eligible for a large discount.

I believe you can also get the same discounts in-store if you bring your student card or other proof that you attend the school, which might allow you to have it in time for the start of semester. Try getting in touch with your school directly, they'll probably be able to advise you.

The most over priced, under spec Macbooks to date!

Sony Vaio Z 13", HP Envy 15" anyone?

Have Apple published their April fool page by mistake? I was hoping to replace my 4 year Macbook pro but it wont be with one of these - in fact looking at these machines mine perhaps isn't that old after all...

Clearly iPad has taking precedence for the last year and these were just thrown together last week?

Come on Apple we used to be your bread an butter!

What ?

So no 13" update, and the cheapest non-glossy (should be standard) MBP sets you back $1949.
Give me a %$^%$ break...

I really, really wanted to switch to OS-X, but even though I can pay for it, I don't like to give my money away.

I just remembered why Microsoft is the leader in OS's.
It allows affordable computing.

I guess I need to try Ubuntu harder.

It's garbage, impractical, and a gimmick for spec hounds that like inferior stuff for more $

Don't forget, it makes the insecure buyers who bought last month feel better about their purchases as well.

In all honesty, I got way more for my money by purchasing my 2.8 C2D at a deep discount versus buying new for Arrandale. I am not at all regretting my purchase and I don't expect to see anything revolutionary from Apple for a few more refresh cycles.

Does anyone want to revive the "I'm waiting for Sandy Bridge" thread? People were expecting way more from this update because Apple dragged their feet for so long to get them out to the market. Had these come out in January or February people would not have been pissing and moaning as much. Oh well...it's Apple.

The new 13" MacBook Pro has the same processor as my nearly 3-year-old iMac (C2D 2.4GHz)! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Way to turn back the clock, Apple!
