I have an Apple store right nearby and wanted to see if there is any real difference (outside of instant gratification and the joy of paying sales tax) of buying in the store as opposed to on-line. My chief concern is whether you can have any kind of customization done in store that you see on the Web site.

Any guidance on this would be very appreciated. :)

Yes, B&H Photo in NYC is great for having many options for macs with no sales tax and often free shipping

How in the world are there not quad core processors in the BTO options yet!

iPad-Unimpressed
Macbook Pro Updates-Unimpressed

April hasn't been looking good.

If that 12 Core Mac Pro thats rumored to come out, I'll be very impressed.

13" Updates = "Meh"

Definitely not regretting my MBP 2.26 purchase from back in September, at this point. :D

512 GB SSD option looks tasty, though not at the cost of a second MBP(!)

Maybe I am an idiot, but I have a 2 year old 17" MBP 2.6 Core Duo w/ 4GB of ram.

Am I missing something, or are the processor speeds and spec's basically unchanged over the past 2 years?

I'm actually not trying to be cynical or passive aggressive - I am seriously curious? Are these quad core? Why is the new MBP an improvement? Why would you NOT buy a used 18 month old laptop for 1200 bucks?

You should keep quiet about that A$ currency strength thing, unless you want all the UK's IT people turning up in Sydney wanting a job :D[/QUOTE

LOL they have already landed ... :) am working with quite a number of UK guys at work currently. And we usually pay more that those in the US for most electronics esp Apple products

Hey, look! For a mere $1450, you can add a 512GB SSD hard drive to your 13" MBP...so there is your upgrade. Hmmm...tempting but I think I'll put that money toward something else. Ready for the SSD prices to come down.

please someone make my question go away lol

"Guys can someone answer this question, It probably sounds stupid so sorry if it does. Its just something I dont get.

On my current mbp I can switch to the 9400 from the 9600 to save battery life but reduce graphical performance.

On these new macbook pros today what does the "optimus" switching actually switch too? Is it a 9400? or does it simply underclock the GPU or what? I dont know :S "

There IS an i7 for the 17". Seems you're the one who can't read the specs!

Cheers,

jahman

Looks like you can't read the other posts! I am glad that your sole existence is to correct someone on the internet that's already been corrected and admitted his fault in a civilized manner. I hope you find another purpose in life, now that your life has proven to be an epic fail.

Cheers!

A truer statement could not be said. To buy C2D after the last refresh was nuts as well, but this is even moreso. I understand why Apple can't refresh as regularly as, say, Dell, but this is just outdated. Clearly they've just got a surplus of C2Ds floating about that Intel gave them a good price for, knowing Apple would likely be the only company to buy them and then tout them as the next big thing.

Agreed! Intel knows that Apple can move them. People are going to be buying up those Core2Duo machines like hotcakes because they have at least 1 updated part.

My final choice :

-13" MBP
-2.66 GHz C2D
-8 GB of RAM
-512 GB SSD
-with Apple Protection Plan (of course)

:rolleyes::cool:;):D

Nicely spec'd machine.

13" package

OK, no, really. Mind out of the gutter:

Yuck 1.3" high in the back. I wonder if that counts table-to-top height with the foot, or what?

Sure, a whole 1.3" ... But high res screen , 1GB 330M GT, 128GB SSD, and a massive array of ports, for the same price as the low end 15" MBP.

If it only ran OSX...

The only reason why I've never ever had MBP is because it was never flagship enough for the money. I still own numerous Macintosh desktop rigs but never had a single laptop.
Closest I got was back in 2003 (I think) but went with Vaio-A because it offered WUXGA screen which was a must in my industry.

Even after this update MPB still is behind some PC laptops. Vaio F offers true Quad Core i7, same 330M graphics, Blu-Ray Writer, sans battery life & LED backlit screen for almost a grand less.

i had already ordered the old macbook pro 13" and i called apple store to modify my order, the told me that i had to wait until it arrived home and then send it back again. But then they told me that they were going to send me the new one right away. So i'm lucky for that!!!!!!:D

I have to say the 13" update is extremely disappointing on several fronts, and I'm certainly not unrealistic in my expectations.

  • Still stuck on C2D.
  • Around £100 price increase, despite the fact that the exchange rate on the dollar has got significantly better.
  • 1280x800 just doesn't cut it anymore. I was hoping for a significant resolution bump.
That's all I really wanted, and I would have upgraded. Fortunately I've got a mid-2009 13" MBP right now, so I don't need to update. I'll skip this and wait for the real update.

I'm not sure where you got the exchange rate from, but right now it is the worst since August 2009, and about 10% down since January.

No expresscard for non-15" models.

I think I'll be sticking with my X1600 for a few more years.

Thank you, Uncle Stevieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!

I can finally buy my new MBP. All those Haterz crying for Blu-Ray need to go buy a PS3. :apple: iTunes HD is quite sufficient for a laptop screen.

This is already a GREAT day :D

Things cost more under socialism?

Not that Canadians have socialism (heck, we have 5 mainstream political parties to choose from compared to the US' mere 2 'choices'), but generally things cost less-- (I know, I know, what's the point.)

New point: I hope no one ordering a new MBP today is a student, with another free iPod promotion around the corner.

That's what socialism gets you. Things cost more. Move or quit whining

Optimus automatically switches between the integrated graphics processor - in the new MBP it is the Intel HD Graphics - and the discrete graphics processor - in the new MBP it is the nVidia 330M. The 9400 on your machine is the integrated graphics processor and it is not in the new MBP. Optimus does exactly what you've been doing (low power consumption / high graphics) but on the fly.

price is a bit of a shocker - expensive laptops again.

I guess it's the mac vs. pc debate again.

If you think the price is a shocker, you aren't understanding what you get when you buy an Apple product.

Best Service, Best Support, Best looking, and made of high quality materials and more. (iLife, etc)

It's similar to the same reason people would buy a Mercedes/BMW over a Kia.
