Now the 15" has the i7, it really is a pro machine!

While that may be true, I want the resolution to match my Cinema display. I use my laptop plugged into my cinema display to have dual monitors. When I drag a window from one screen to another - I want the resolutions to match so that I do not have to resize as I move them back and forth. Thus - I'll stick with the 17" for now....

finally, a reasonable point. well played.

Hate to sound like a broken record but anyone reading MacRumors would know that the $1999 Macbook Pro is a joke unless you really don't want to mess with doing anything yourself. $200 extra to get a negligible increase in MHz and 180GB hard disk space? For ~$200 you can get a 1TB drive from MacSales for it!

Agreed. The difference is 2.93ghz in Turbo Mode on the 2.4Ghz to 3.06Ghz in Turbo Mode on the 2.53Ghz. NOT WORTH IT.

You cannot compare desktops with an entry level notebook....
You can when they're using effectively identical processors in terms of performance.

My Late 2007 MacBook 2.2 GHz still holds its own. One or two clock speed multipliers aren't going to change the world. It's even worse when nearly everything is Wolfdale or Penryn.

2.93 and 3.06 GHz Mac minis anyone?

Im still running the 1st gen 15" macbook pro...the one with the 1.83 processor =P

With that said, im pretty excited about upgrading. How much better will the performance be between the i5 15" and the i7 15"?

Same here! My old MBP has been a trooper, but it is time for a new one. I have the same question as you, and I'm also wondering if the additional 256mb of graphics memory that the high end 15" comes with versus the middle 15" is worth it.

Since the MacBook Pro 13" has been changed (better battery life), I guess that means there won't be a 13" MBP with i5 or i7 processor for a while.

Your probably right. Apple needs to separate the entry level 13" Pro from the "Real Pro" models.

Lets be honest, most people buying the 13" MBP aren't going to use the power anyway. I'm not saying you won't but a lot would never. It's mostly highschool kids and college students using them for web browsing and word processing.

Exactly. So the killer feature of this upgrade is the 10 hour battery life. I would guess that 90%+ of present 13" MBP owners couldn't tell you which processor they have now.

Right, besides the fact that we more than double the tax people do in the states, our base MBP is still just under $2000.

Oh wait, maybe it's because our average joe is more than twice as rich as the American one and our standard of living is significantly higher here?

However, health care in Canada is cheaper than in the U.S. Clearly socialism at work! :)

But seriously, I need a 13" because of its size but prefer an anti-glare screen...any point in waiting for that to happen? Thx!

Worth upgrading RAM?

Looks like the pricing hasn't changed much if you want Apple to add another 4 gigs of memory. With an education discount that comes to $360. Is it worth it or to purchase offline and install yourself?

Ah but don't forget all the discounts we enjoyed when the pound was trading at well over $2 a couple of years ago. No wait - we got shafted then too!

I think everyone in Europe, Canada, and Australia should stop complaining that Apple products cost more in their countries/continents. We understand. Guess what, everything costs more for you. Everything. Even products made in your countries when exported to America cost more. We pay less for a Bentley than someone in London does. Get over it. There are several reasons things cost more and it isn't limited to the exchange rate. We get it, you're upset/sad/pissed/crying/whatever. I understand, you want it to be more fair and have everyone in the world pay the same price for things relative to exchange rate, but, it isn't going to happen. I'm sorry. Really. But only because I have you jerks whining about it constantly. Every thread that mentions a product release/update is accompanied by at least three people from the above list of places complaining that "Our money is worth x, why can't apple see that?!" At least, on the whole, those posts are filled with tons of ridiculous typos and outrageous grammar, but they still get tiresome. Sorry. (rant off)

More bad news for Adobe

Ya know, I WAS going to upgrade my CS3 to CS5 this month.... But with the new MBP update today, I'm afraid Adobe will have to wait a month or two.

Question about high-res screen on 15"... Would that make standard def movies look pixelated?

Unlikely, because the individual pixels are so small. When you display a DVD image on a 15" screen, it doesn't really matter what resolution the screen has (as long as it isn't lower than the DVD resolution). It gets scaled anyway. There will be more difference to a hi-resolution image, but that's because the hi-res image gets better.

My thoughts exactly. If I'm going to pay one of the highest prices for a notebook on the laptop market (including PCs), I expect it to be completely leading-edge. This thing is called the Macbook Pro but it's taken 6 months to get Nehalem. I expect it'll be at least another 6 months before we can even start contemplating QM, USB 3.0 and 1333Mhz. It's ridiculous, really.

There will be a slew of fanboys flooding to the defence of Apple with 'eeh but look at the extra support you get' and 'it's worth it because it's a Mac'. If you are 15 year old kid who got a crap load of birthday money, fine, splurge it on a MBP. But if you are the PRO in the Macbook Pro name and you're running a business and you have any financial sense at all you will understand why the Pro line is becoming exceedingly frustrating. Think about it logically - would you spend an extra $1000 on an OS and a trackpad? Because that's basically what you're paying for here.

Whew! Thought I was the only sane person in here! Don't get me wrong I'd like to be purchasing a MBP just as much as anyone. I just can't justify such a large price premium. The last mac I bought back in 2008 was a relatively modest price premium and I remember easily justifying it. But $1000 is far too much.

If you think the price is a shocker, you aren't understanding what you get when you buy an Apple product.

Best Service, Best Support, Best looking, and made of high quality materials and more. (iLife, etc)

It's similar to the same reason people would buy a Mercedes/BMW over a Kia.

Don't compare Mercedes with Apple. I have a mercedes with 20 years with minor problems up to date. My macbook pro have broken 3 times in 1.5 years.

So much for taking the MBPs to the next level... what a joke. One of the worst updates ever! How disappointing!

One of the worst posts ever. You just keep regurgitating BS post after post. Best troll in the forest!

cheers

doesn't make sense, the pro line should have been updated together, now you have a gap within the pro models and it's quite disappointing. don't forget the Mac Pro Apple! I guess we can kiss the Air goodbye too.

It's garbage, impractical, and a gimmick for spec hounds that like inferior stuff for more $

Whoa! "...inferior stuff for more $" Sounds like someone is trying to move into Apple's demographic.

Really - is there anyone else in the UK selling Core2Duos in small low-res laptops for around £1000?

Or is this positioning to make a £449 base iPad look like an unbelievable price?
