While the Vision Pro does not launch until February 2, Apple today released visionOS 1.0.1 for the headset, according to developer Nicolás Álvarez. It's unclear what's new in the software update, as Apple has yet to start publicly sharing visionOS release notes, but the version number suggests that it's likely a minor update with bug fixes.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said that Apple would start shipping Vision Pro review units to selected media personnel following a January 23 meeting, so visionOS 1.0.1 should be available on those headsets as an immediate update out of the box. It could also be a day-one update for the public if initial Vision Pro units ship with visionOS 1.0 installed.

visionOS 1.0.1 is the first-ever software update for the Vision Pro, and it has a build number of 21N311, according to Álvarez. Apple will likely unveil a larger visionOS 2.0 update with new features at WWDC in June.

(Thanks, Aaron!)

I agree with you on this, it's annoying af. It's not just Tim, the anniversary of the Macintosh reminded us that Apple has always been greedy, seeing as they were selling a desktop computer for $2500 ($7000 adjusted to 2024) in 1984. I bought it because I know I can return it within 14 days if I'm not 100% blown away by it. Also, I can keep it for six months to a year and sell it at what will probably be an acceptable loss. I see it more as renting or leasing, just like the cost of owning a vehicle between the time you buy and sell it.

Damn dude, if you have that big a tax refund, fix your withholding. You're giving Uncle Sam a free $3500+ loan over the course of a year!

Imagine getting a brand new headset, you put it on, and then...

...you have to sit through a "downloading update" and "preparing update" screen, followed by 15 minutes of pitch black nothing broken up only by a spinning circle and the words "installing."

Truly the magical high-tech future has arrived. :p

My question is will you be able to drive a car while wearing this? It seems like it wouldn’t really be the same as being distracted by holding a phone and looking down at it while driving. If it works ok while driving I think a lot more people will be interested in it. Will you have to cheat the settings somehow to be able to do this?

It wouldn't be entirely inconceivable if the R1 chip can continue to do passthrough while the slow update applies (so you see the spinning circle but you also see your room), and it only stops working during a brief reboot. I don't know if it does that; it just seems theoretically possible.

That seems like a really bad idea. Don't do safety-critical things (like driving) while wearing a device that would leave you temporarily blind if it fails (like VR glasses with passthrough video).

If the Vision Pro doesn’t ship with 1.0.1 after the initial setup I’m going to update right away and then play around.

Of course, user could put it on, see they need an update, start update, slip it off or perhaps just up, do things on the Mac or iPad or iPhone or go to the restroom or grab a bite of food, etc, then come back to it, slip it back on and resume... exactly as we can do when our Mac or iPad or iPhone needs updates. I do this just about every time vs.- say- sitting there staring at the black screen on my Mac or iPad while any update downloads and applies.

Well you could tear it off your head quickly if it fails. I’m just curious if people will try doing it and if law enforcement will consider these types of devices as the same as cellphones when being ticketed for distracted driving.
