Well I thought I'd give it a shot on my Series 2 first, after about an hour it updated with no issues. I'll give it another day or two before I update my Series 4. I'm on iOS 12.1. I was reluctant at first but reading that many have updated already I thought why not give it a try.

I updated my Series 4 from 5.1 to 5.1.1 with no issues, if that puts your mind at ease some.

As an aside, I continue to be blown away by the speed difference between the Series 2 and the Series 4. As a former Series 2 owner, I remember the days of waiting 45 minutes to an hour for a watch update to install. I installed the 5.1.1 update on the Series 4 in 15 minutes (including the time it took to download the update and transfer it to the watch).

5.1 to 5.1.1 is not relevant to the original issue

Why doesn’t Apple make any of the new watch faces available to older models?!? Perhaps the very slightly larger screen of the Series 4 makes some impossible to “fit”, but the solid color watch face...?! C’mon.

That and adding music to the watch. I also made the jump from the S2 and have been so happy with this upgrade.

What a time to be alive... where a software update to your watch can render it unusable.

Better than the time when you bought an electronic device and you would never get any firmware updates to fix issues with your devices and the only solution was to buy a newer revision of the same product with fixes, but more bugs as well.

Thanks for your vote of confidence. I may just go ahead and update it tonight. Also, I agree with your observations, even from Series 2 it's been a significant upgrade. Between install time, the screen size, the changes to dimensions of the case, the haptic feedback on the crown, literally everything. Sure the Series 2 works but man I'm loving Series 4!

Edit: I've now updated Series 4 and once it started to install it was FAST! No issues with the install on 2 watches.

Do you mean this color face?

Ok I missed the last update, thank goodness, and I just updated my S4 ss to 5.1.1 with no problems. From start to finish took exactly 16 minutes. I am impressed.

While I'm grateful that Mojave and iOS 12 have been relatively stable and much unlike their direct predecessors, it's really alarming to see how many serious issues with bricking have occurred with various updates to watchOS 5, pretty much since beta. I mean, I guess if you survive an update, then there's no issue, but the fact that the risk is even this great is still very worrisome.

Apple clearly needs to slow their update cadence or at lease decrease how drastic the annual updates are. Their teams clearly aren't equipped to release such releases so frequently without a hitch.

Last week 5.1 bricked my watch. I updated the replacement watch tonight, and while it completed the update, I do not have the new “color” faces as an option. Anyone else have this issue ?. I’m on latest updates on both devices

Let's hope the improved fall detection works. I had a severe fall last week without any detection at all. I guess it didn't work in cases where one falls due to lost consciousness as that prevents any of the usual body movements to lessen or deter the fall. Just hope the new one does.

As a beard wearer I support the fact that the male villain is portrayed with a beard.

If a watch is out of warranty, will it be replaced as a bricked-by-update device?

i am still on 5.0.1 , wait for more people with 5.0.1 to 5.1.1 write here that is safe :D

After all the reports of successful and speedy updates, I decided last night to give it a go. It only took 1 hour and 17 minutes to update my Series 4. o_O

At least I made it through safely to the other side.

@klymr lol really 1h and 17 min...if mine goes so long i will freak out...

I was pretty nervous, especially after having experienced one of these software updates (3.1.1) bricking my Series 2 watch. I should say, the download portion of the update is what took forever. At times it said there was 2 days remaining, and it even paused a couple of times because the download was going so slow. Once it was downloaded, it prepared, verified, and installed in roughly 10 minutes.
