Apple Releases watchOS 5.2 With ECG Functionality in Europe and Hong Kong, AirPods 2 Support

Same here. I bought mine in Singapore but live in Sweden. No ECG app. Why???
You will only get the app if the watch was purchased in a country where the app has been approved. Your Watch won’t be able to get the ECG app until Singapore is an approved country.

Same here! Live in Italy and bought my Watch 4 in Singapore. ECG is functioning all over the country but not on my Watch! I am very angry I think Apple should do something because it’s not our fault having bought the Watch in another country...

Does anyone know how the country is validated for operation? I bought mine from Spain which is in the list but I live in Cyprus which is not in the list.

ECG wont work whatsoever... This is so stupid Apple! I am very fed up with such limitations. Europe is one continent, why dont enable it for all members?

If you happen to be traveling to a country that is on the list, you wil be able to activate the ECG while you’re there since you also purchased from a country on the list. It uses GPS to determine your location. Once the ECG feature is activated, it will work anywhere :)

Is that right?
Others are posting that you only have to have purchased your S4 AW in a country on the list. GPS and location has nothing to do with it!!

Thanks for the post, I updated my earlier reply, which was not complete.

After you buy in an approved country, you still have to do the activation of the ECG feature while located in an approved country. After ECG is activated it will work anywhere in the world. But you do need to be in an approved country for the initial signup/activation of the ECG feature.

Okay is that a new feature of iOS 12.2? Because it certainly was not the case for 12.1.4 where ECG worked no matter where you were.

ECG does work wherever you are. But only after you set up ECG. You have to do the initial setup of the ECG feature in an approved country. I don’t know if earlier software versions were different, but as of now:

1. Purchase from an approved country

2. Setup the ECG feature while physically located in an approved country

3. It works anywhere in the world

Okay thanks I won't be "upgrading" to 12.2. As ECG works just fine using 12.1.4 in NZ , including the initial setup......didn't have to be in the US where I bought my S4.

According to earlier posts in this thread, as long as the ECG function has already been setup you can upgrade to 12.2 without losing ECG, even if you upgrade while you’re in an un-approved country. But I can’t vouch for that personally!

Thanks mate......still debating if I will take the risk:)

Thanks for the suggestions. The irony is that I was in Belgium which is on the list this week but didn’t have my Apple Watch with me. I guess I have to try this in 2 months when I will be in Greece.

Have you opened the health app to set up the ECG app?
Anyway if you want to find out where your watch is from, you should look at the model number that starts with MT instead of the A2008 one (click model again to revel it) The last one or two letter of that MT number should indicate where it’s from, think the UK is B? Just google it

Thanks. Yeah I’ve opened Health app on iPhone, restarted my phone and watch too.

Next to model it says 3E347Z/A - I’ve tried googling and can’t find any answers as to where it’s from.

The other issue may be, that my iPhone was purchased from Japan on a trip, so not sure if the iPhone also has to be in a supported country to set up the health app for ECG (both regions on iPhone and Watch are set to UK).

For ECG activation I don't think your location matters at all, only the country where you initially bought the device from matters. Example I live in South America and bought my watch in the USA, the watch was setup and ECG activated for the first time while being physically in South America and it worked for me, so it doesn't use the GPS location to activate, at least in my case with a US watch.

Okay, after a long and fretful experience upgrading my AW S4 to 5.2 and my iPhone 8 to 12.2 the ECG function still works just fine. For me, AW bought in the US, the only criteria to have the ECG function is, like you, country of purchase of the watch. The software updates didn't make any difference.

The 19 countries are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, the U.K plus Switzerland.

The ECG app would only be available to you if physically activated whilst in the UK (or any other region where the ECG app is now available)

In my experience what you have just posted is not true. If you purchased the watch in an approved country (in my case the US) you can activate the function in any country you like. In fact in my case, ECG activated automatically once my AW was paired to my iPhone, which was not purchased in the US or any other country supporting the ECG function. And the physical activation did not take place in a country approved for the use of the AW as a ECG measuring device.

US watch models are not subject to the geo restriction and can be activated anywhere in the world. As of iOS 12.2 non US watches must be activated in a region where ECG support is now available
