So what's the deal with all the "security" updates lately?! Does Apple release bug fixes at all? Everything is a "security" update. SMH

Good to know about the mask, going to keep the mask on forever 😄
Feedback sent!

I had to manually unlock the watch the first time using the mask though
Did it happen to you as well?
you mean when trying to unlock the phone wearing a mask? no, havn't had to do that, it hasn't been working all the time but I'd say 98% of the time

A security update IS a bug fix, not just one fixing where something doesn't work right (although there may be some of those in there too), but one fixing where someone can take advantage of how something doesn't work right and steal or corrupt data, etc.

Security updates are at least as important as any other updates (non-security bug fix, feature, etc).

The only thing is that there are enough of them that one might wish that there was more (there is some, but perhaps not enough) proactive bug-hunting going on.

You could do like I did and replace the Series 3 with a Series 5. Problem solved.

It isn't always painful even with a Series 3. But the modest storage on there does at least sometimes make it painful, esp. if one is using too much of that with optional content.

And while I don't see it as a really big deal, the complainers have this point: Apple is still selling new Series 3 watches as the low end model, and yet, it's too easy with them to get into a situation where updates are quite tedious.

After forcing the iPhone to restart , it worked, with the mask
No mask: still takes a bunch of second to unlock

I remember reading somewhere you could disable the lock feature, that is new since 14.7.0 but couldn't find how or where

I just updated my S3 from 7.6, and with 1.3GB free space, in about 15 minutes total. It now has 2.6GB free.

No need to go through the un-pair/re-pair/add ApplePay cards again routine.

The early versions of 7.x were indeed painful, but there have been improvements since, at least with the minor point updates like this one, that make it unnecessary.

I did follow the routine to get from 7.5 to 7.6.

That’s interesting, because I don’t have anything but the default apps and yet I can’t update.

(Edited for clarity.)

We have a total of 15 Apple devices in our home, I do the updating because I enjoy it. But in truth, if left alone, every Apple device will auto update on their own…
yeah i normally let them do their thing automatically but manually do the important/critical security ones.

I sleep with my watch on. Your process wouldn’t work for me.
Same. While I used to have my Series 5 (and Series 2 before that) on a Nomad charger in nightstand mode overnight, since Apple brought sleep-tracking, I now always sleep with my watch.

So now need to deal with doing the updates more intentionally. But not a huge deal, not enough for me to be annoyed about. Agree with others, still better to have an update than not.

Got a link for me complaining if they don't update?

The real problem here is they have a currently marketed product that doesn't update correctly. So updates are painful. I'll definitely keep complaining about that. Every time.

What a joke.
It's more that they've got an old product that you can still buy that requires extra steps to install updated firmware.

If you bought it new when it came out, hey at least you got a good life out of it.

If you bought it new/used recently, you kinda knew that there were extra steps involved to install updated firmware.

If you cannot install updated firmware and it's under warranty (which if you bought it recently applies to you), bring it to Apple as there's a problem.

You also have the option of just not installing new firmware and dealing with the potential repercussions.

Your life is your own man, live it as you do, but take ownership of how you live it.

Only changes I've made are adding the maximum number of faces, and a couple credit cards.

Before just going ahead with the rigamarole, I made it a point to check free space before throwing caution to the wind and forging ahead, and surprisingly, it worked.

Previously, with ~3GB free on a clean slate, it would still choke on an update payload of a couple hundred MB.

This one was <100MB, and worked with less than half the free space.

Exactly!! Some people! Either update your wife or get an Apple Watch 6!

bruh! Lmao comical statement.

trust me, every married man here, or engaged man will soon find out never upgrade to a wife that wants new new hotness in things! very few men have THAT kind of credit card, cash or $billions cause like a spider that climbs 13 stories it (she) has no concept of top (Spending when it comes to your dinero)

I'm getting really tired of the frequent Apple Watch updates. Updating my wife's Apple Watch 3 is painful.

Get it together Apple.
Why do you have to get the update? Cmiiw, but I don't think watchOS update would nag you like ios update no? If you don't like updating the watch, just leave it as it is. It will still work, right?

simple …
download & prepare update whilst you sleep then put watch on charge as normal !
(You do find time to charge your watch at the moment, I assume ?).

Problem is, the Series 3 is still being sold and the Series 5 is not. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
For what it's worth though, this update worked without having to factory reset and re-pair my series 3.

Sorry, I am just not buying that there's this much trying to "steal" or "corrupt" data. Not as much as there are actual BUGS where something isn't working correctly. I think Apple is obsessed with "security" and how their privacy stance makes them look to the public. Or I should say, how they think it makes them look. It seems to be all we ever hear about. This did not used to be the case.

Even with my S6 updating the Apple Watch is a really unpleasant experience. It is not possible to initiate the update when the watch is on the charger. You have to unlock it and keep it unlocked while downloading the update, otherwise it might fail. Than it takes ages.

I have activated auto updates on my watch but in all the years I use Apple Watches I have never seen an automatically installed update.
I read somewhere that if you turn off BT that the update process falls back to (much faster WiFi). Tried it on the last significant update, and it did seem to download and install much faster.

This update seems to have fixed a lingering battery issue I've had since I got my new iPhone.
