I'm getting really tired of the frequent Apple Watch updates. Updating my wife's Apple Watch 3 is painful.

Get it together Apple.
For what it's worth. My Apple Watch 3 updated without issues to 7.6 and now to 7.6.1. IIRC it also, to my great surprise, updated to 7.5 without needing to reset.

There is nothing stored on the watch and no extra apps though.

Only changes I've made are adding the maximum number of faces, and a couple credit cards.

Before just going ahead with the rigamarole, I made it a point to check free space before throwing caution to the wind and forging ahead, and surprisingly, it worked.

Previously, with ~3GB free on a clean slate, it would still choke on an update payload of a couple hundred MB.

This one was <100MB, and worked with less than half the free space.
Really? I have only 1 watch face and 1 card, yet it still prompts me to unpair. Oh well. Guess I’ll just get it over with.

Problem is, the Series 3 is still being sold and the Series 5 is not. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
For what it's worth though, this update worked without having to factory reset and re-pair my series 3.
True about the Series 5, I had forgotten. I bought mine and my wife's Series 5 watches "Renewed" on Amazon. I got the stainless steel for about $400 when it would have cost about $800 brand new.

I turned off the “use Apple Watch to unlock while wearing a mask” setting…my watch unlocks instantly and without swiping now.
Good find!

To get there
unselect the
unlock with Watch- your watch
in settings -Face Id &Passcode

No click sound too: it could be a nice bug 😉

BTW Yesterday I had to try few times wearing the mask
because it didn't unlock right away like it did at home

It only works maybe half of the time
Luck you on ‘have of the time’.

I updated my watch last night, kept on charger most of the day. Went out today late afternoon …
9x in a row … some attempts right after another, others a few minutes after a failed attempt while walking standing - EACH failed to unlock my iPhone! Grrrr. Prior to WatchOS 7.6.1 I’d be able to unlock my iPhone consistently until a period of 30-60mins (I’m guessing as I hadn’t timed it).

iPhone 12 mini + iOS 14.7.1
Watch Nike+ S6 + WatchOS 7.6.1

Definitely a bug!

Quotes below from another thread yet fully related on this 7.6.1 update.

Came here to say this. Just updated my watch and now it only unlocks sometimes. No idea why it’s so hit or miss.
your guess is as good as anyone’s … I think a major bug is here.
New update does absolutely nothing for me. Still buggy as hell. That sucks.
:(

HealthKit API still has a bug if you start a workout in a third party fitness app and don’t exercise (Or even move from seated position) will STILL write to Health the length of the workout after you cancel/complete the exercise - even if you did nothing.

they're really buggy and sporadic
Watch unlock to iPhone - yup still here, yet its less consistent than ever before.

Hopefully the delay in unlocking via iPhone is fixed or at least improved…. Guess I’ll find out later today…
Nope … it isn’t fixed nor improved currently … we’ll have to wait for another Update.

Good find!
Could not remember where then I found it
unselected the

Face Id &Passcode
unlock with Watch- your watch

in case others want to try

I also tried to disable Unlock with Watch. Waited 30 mins then re-enabled it. Still no joy/change for the better.

What I find VERY strange is earlier today Watch would state the ‘lock iphone’ when it remained locked.
I’d swipe with mask on the the lock UI would just shake like a failed attempt. Because of this I disabled wipe iPhone after 10 attempts. Can you imagine trying to unlock your phone then 10x while fully mobile boom your phone ends up deleting all data!! 😠

😣
You are right! I checked and mine re-enabled itself too.
I see a 14.7.2 coming soon…hopefully!
I’m sure someone at Apple has a watch and an iPhone to unlock 🤨

UPDATE:
I restarted my iPhone immediately after setting it on OFF
and now it's a pleasure to unlock the watch
If I need to use the mask I will put it back ON

What do you mean "doesn't update correctly"?
The GPS S3 doesn’t have enough storage space for the updates, so users of that model need to reset and restore their watch everytime an update is released (which has been no less than once a month for watchOS 7 and iOS 14). They can’t just download and install the update like the rest of us. That’s what ‘doesn’t update correctly’ means. That’s why he says updates are painful on a S3.

Yeah, let's stop the watchOS updates so we can accommodate you.
It’s not just him. ALL users of the GPS S3 have the same problem with the updates. So yeah, let’s stop updates for the S3 to accommodate ALL users of that model, not just one of them.

I haven't needed to reset to factory state, unpair, repair, etc the last few updates. Granted I may have reduced the number of songs and photos actually stored on the watch.
do you happen to have the LTE series 3? because that one updates just fine. The problem is with the GPS series 3 only.

That’s interesting, because I don’t have anything but the default apps and yet I can’t update.

(Edited for clarity.)
Looks like he has the LTE series 3 and you have the GPS series 3.

I’ve just updated my S3GPS without any reset/restore. In fact, I’ve done all updates without reset/restore since before 7.0. I initiated the update directly on the watch itself which was unlocked, but not connected to the iPhone although it is connected to Wifi. Put the watch on charge, when I returned the watch had updated. At no time was the watch connected to my Iphone, in fact the phone was in my pocket several miles away, whilst I was shopping. Couldn’t be simpler.

Apple today released watchOS 7.6.1, a minor update to the watchOS 7 operating system that was released in September 2020. watchOS 7.6.1 comes two weeks after the release of watchOS 7.6, an update that brought ECG capabilities to new regions.

Apple-watchOS-7.6.1-Feature-fanned.jpg

‌‌The watchOS 7.6.1 update‌‌ can be downloaded for free through the dedicated Apple Watch app on the ‌iPhone‌ by going to General > Software Update.

To install the new software, the Apple Watch needs to have at least 50 percent battery, it needs to be placed on a charger, and it needs to be in range of the ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌iPhone‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌.

According to Apple's release notes, the watchOS 7.6.1 update includes important security updates and it is recommended for all users. An Apple security support document indicates that the update fixes a memory issue that may have been actively exploited in the wild, so Apple Watch users should upgrade as soon as possible. This is the same issue that Apple previously addressed in iOS 14.7.1 and macOS Big Sur 11.5.1.

Hope in this decade the ECG feature will be available in Mexico

Yeah, before watchOS 7.0 installing the updates wasn’t an issue for anyone, but starting with watchOS 7 several AW series 3 users have reported that they were unable to install updates without resetting the watch to free enough space (though some also report that this wasn’t the case anymore with the recently released watchos 7.6 update). You’re lucky if you had no need to do that at least once between september and now.
