I'm getting a new MBP next week. Will this be on it? I though the Xcode on the mac install disks were different from the iOS Xcode stuff I'm I wrong. ???

I never rate negative, but this time it deserve it. Xcode free for non developer is a must.

Agreed, we need to stop patting Apple on the back for something you could get for free from your install CD.

Lion better only be $24 for the upgrade now.

I don't get the hate for the $5 download. If you're interested, it's $5. Less than a combo meal from a fast food restaurant.
I agree but it is yet another step into the quagmire of microtransactions that I despise.

Death by a thousand papercuts.

Hopefully it will still come with the OS X installation media.

Wow, this is getting ridiculous.
I want a compiler on my Unix machine, why do they think I switched from Windows?

I only ever use gcc and FileMerge, can I get them some other way than by installing Xcode?

I think this is the only annoying part, people who use only command line tools of XCode package, like gcc. Why do they have to pay?

You can always compile and install gcc on your own using many other available utilities like macports, but it's still tons of work.

I think it is still free, you just have to sign up as a developer (there is free access for that part).

"You must be an iOS or Mac Developer Program member to download Xcode 4 or you can purchase Xcode 4 from the Mac App Store."

Yup, I'm logged in, non-paid developer. What the hell, Apple?
In any case, I'm certainly not paying until it's far more stable than the GM.

Well, since they're only releasing it today, it was before now, by definition, not release software. Therefore it's not surprising there are bugs. I'm asking you how you can make a judgement on this software yet.

And what's with the $5?

Well, I was just guessing that it hadn't changed since GM 2 which is only a week or 2 old. It's not like I was saying Beta 2 was buggy or something. If they've magically fixed all of the major bugs between the second Gold Master release and now, more power to them :)

I voted negative, it was free indeed and gave the opportunity to more will-be developers to try it out and make software, myself included.

Give me a break.

It's free to registered Developers because they pay $99 to be registered.

You're complaining as a novice you have to pay $4.99?

How does one square that circle?

Cyberduck is also free on their web page, but 19 EU on App Store. Devs pay 99 a year to get it and all aother things. When you buy a Mac or Retail disk you pay for it too.

I don't get the hate for the $5 download. If you're interested, it's $5. Less than a combo meal from a fast food restaurant. If you're serious about it, you're going to become an ADC member anyways to get full access to all that it offers, which is only $99 a year.

And if you ARE an ADC Member, it's free. So...

I agree. First of all, is is JUST $5, not a big deal. I really don't get the self entitlement people have these days to get everything for free. This is the full version for just under $5, no lite version no feature limited - the full version. That is really cheap - and also we don't know the reasons for charging, might have to do with some licensing.

The rest of the tool chain and Xcode 3 are on the OS recovery disk that came with your Mac, and it looks it's still available for download at least for now from developer.apple.com.

XCode was a nice free development package while it lasted. I have no such issues paying $5 for full use of it. Pretty much everything else costs way more than that.

The $4.99 fee is very much in line with Apple's interpretation of Sarbanes-Oxley and how they charge a nominal fee for iPod touch iOS updates, but not iPhones since they are accounted for differently.

Xcode will probably be free with Mac OS X, but major updates will have a nominal fee unless you have a developer account, since it's cost is built into the yearly fee.

I am sure you can get gcc somewhere.

As far as FileMerge goes, just use the old one on Snow Leopard if you have to. Anyway I think it will be distributed with Lion when it's available.

Also $5 is almost like a token... having used XCode4 for about a month, it's well worth 5 dollars.

edit: Seriously .. it's $5 ...... Jesus, I can't believe we are debating about 5 freaking dollars.

It clearly states that it’s still free for members of the Apple Developer Programme. Still, $5 isn’t that much at all if you’re a non-member.

There are compilers for free on your UNIX System.

In fact, LLVM is all free. MacPorts has all the versions of GCC and DragonEgg project with LLVM extends LLVM code optimization as a plugin to GCC.

The Xcode IDE 4 is $4.99 to leverage all and much more.

Xcode != Dev tools.

You still get all Unix Dev tools, etc. for free with your Mac. In fact, you get XCode for free also, except its XCode 3.0.

I don't understand why Apple did this, but you are still going to get all you need.

Got version 3 for free with my free ADC account, that's not an option for version 4?

There are free levels to both iOS and Mac developer programs. I don't see anything in the announcement disqualifying these members (although I haven't read anything other than the OP yet).

Negative. I was hoping for the same but when I tried and logged in I got the following message:

Hi Justin,

You must be an iOS or Mac Developer Program member to download Xcode 4 or you can purchase Xcode 4 from the Mac App Store.

Learn about Apple Developer Programs

Additionally, I think that Apple should combine the Mac and iOS dev programs so that you pay one $99/year fee to develop for both. This would encourage a lot of synergy and cross-platform development between OS X and iOS.
