I'm saying this again and again and people don't seem to read or understand.

There are no limitations for wannabe developers. Apple just updated XCode 3.2 to 3.2.6 yesterday to support for iOS 4.3.

XCode 3.2.6 is enough to develop for every single Apple platform out there.

What bewilders me about this setup is that why Apple cannot connect the dots. I have a developer account which is my Apple ID. I have an iTunes account, same Apple ID.

One would think... they would set up systems to communicate and recognize that I am a developer and make the Xcode list as free in the app store. If anything, would be nice to have a "Developer" tab appear and offer those items. (Kind of like how Starbucks wifi alters the iTunes Store in iOS.

While on the topic of Apple IDs, it is really ridiculous that the ID cannot be changed to match your actual in-use email address (if available). Especially when my address is changed to a MobileMe address.

It is for me.

I mean, thanx to Apple posting it in the Mac App Store, Xcode attracts new potential developers that will find this limitation pretty disgusting.

What legitimate developer would find this disgusting?

I thought about this as well, and I'm pretty sure they'll do something like that, if they want to switch all downloads to AppStore.

+1 I agree with that. I am stuck with a Googlemail ID, even though I have a MobileMe address. It cannot, apparently, be changed!

A fine political statement. Apple are indeed placing a simple barrier to control what goes on the platform. And all control is bad.

Or perhaps control is sometimes good. The law determines what we can and cannot do. Passports and borders control who can move where. Is this bad?

When platforms have no controls, there are advantages. But there are also disadvantages. The growth of iOS as a platform has occurred in part because it's a regulated place. Not a free-for all lawless state.

C.

Your not seriously comparing control of iOS platform to passport control are you ( talk about Hyperbole ) ?! Lets compare Apples to Apples not oranges.

That will never happen. Just because Apple decide to charge $5 for the new version of its developer software, how does that equate in any way to selling parts of their integrated OS apps on the App Store? Stop panicking.

That was a bit of an exaggeration. What I meant was, FaceTime, Xcode, and I'm pretty sure more thing will come up, maybe not with Lion, but other things.

I am saying that a free for all platform is great for some things. And bad for others.

A controlled curated platform is more attractive for commerce, just as a policed city is a better place for trade.

Bought it because I thought it would be nice and easy to get updates of it through the App Store, But I get this everytime i try to download it(and always just after around 230MB downloaded or so):

Anyone else? Never seen this before, installed a few other stuff from the App Store before.

And my connection is very stable, never had any issues downloading Xcode normally.

And how do you know Apple won't make the last version free for Lion users?

Apple never gave away free XCode upgrades before either. So this is not something new. You always had to buy the new OS to use the new XCode, so it did cost.

I see the more I try to reason, the more you try to deny, so it's just a futile game between us. Maybe my reasoning is flawed, but I'll stick to my point, for now, that as a student, in an area where $5 can make a difference, Xcode 4 is temporarily out of reach. I still think Microsoft makes a better choice with its free Express Editions and Professional Editions for students.

After further investigation I found out that the process that is doing the downloading is called "storeagent" and after using "opensnoop" to see which files it touches as the download is starting, I deleted those files and folders:

/Users/joel/Library/Cookies/com.apple.appstore.plist
/Users/joel/Library/Application Support/AppStore/
/Users/joel/Library/Caches/com.apple.storeagent/
/Users/joel/Library/Caches/storeagent/ (kinda weird this one exists)

Anyway it seems to work now! I'm upto 1.1GB now (passed the 230MB)

Kind of a crappy bug for normal users tho.

Any reason to download through MAS instead of through ADC? Does MAS just download a DMG (like the lion preview)?

There are amazing people who succeed regardless of the highest barriers. And there are people who can find excuses in the smallest setback.

Anyone who finds their lifetime choices are impeded by the value of a hamburger is not going to make much of themselves.

In some countries, $5 worth way more than a hamburger. I know, stupid exchange rate.

As I've said, I'll probably find other ways to get closer to Xcode 4. Including badgering mom into getting a prepaid debit card.

But all in all, wouldn't it encourage people to learn to code if Apple provided the tools for free? That's my whole point here -- while I can get Xcode 4 with a bit of determination, others may be easily turned away (to Visual Studio instead -- I'm really abusing the product in this tired argument, aren't I?), which is quite unfortunate in my opinion.

Not ready

This release was rushed. After I downloaded/ran the installer, I noticed that they spelled "developer" incorrectly -- obviously not a huge problem, but an indication that this release may not have been given the QA it deserved. Also, the first install attempt failed, and it told me to look at /var/log/install.log, which indicated that a source file was not available to be copied to its destination. This may have been a race condition, since the install ran correctly the second time I tried it.

So far, the IDE itself looks like an improvement. I was hoping to get a "view full screen" option for source editing, which unfortunately wasn't delivered. Also, I don't like what they seem to have done with the new documentation. When I searched for information on "OpenCL", all I got were links to web pages. The previous documentation packages had all of this information available locally, which is very convenient for me (since I bring my laptop on the train every day).

So all in all, I'd say it's a mixed bag and, although there are some really great new features, it was released a bit too early.

As I said earlier, guitarists have to pay for strings. Painters have to pay for brushes. Does this deter people from becoming artists and musicians?

I really don't think it does. I think making a sacrifice is just part of becoming an artist.

The token charge for Xcode is not about making a profit. It's to stop idiots seeing the word "free" and clicking on a 4GB download.

anyone know if i can safely delete the "install xcode" package thats in my applications folder? just concerned it might affect the appstores ability to check for updates in the future if I do. Its 4gb off wasted space.

Probably; but then again, guitarists and painters can buy their tools off a store somewhere, while Xcode is unlikely to be available in a box I can grab at a store for $5. It is a barrier, small as it is.

Meh. Right now I'm facing a much bigger issue -- even if I got $5, an undersea fiber cable was torn to pieces yesterday and the entire nation now lives on an 8 KB/s net connection. I'll stick to my local copy of Xcode 3 =(

So the thing in the App folder isn't xcode (like it would be for every other app you get off the app store)?

Wow. Xcode 4 is the buggiest piece of GM Apple software I've ever used. And when my code does something strange, I'm not an experienced enough developer to know if something is my fault or the fault of the IDE :) (Developer forums seem to concur on how buggy it is, crashing doing simple things like copying and pasting, etc. Some people went as far to suggest Apple should start over!).

Since they're releasing it, maybe they know something I don't - who knows maybe some rogue preference somewhere that only some people have lying around makes it unstable. I guess I'll have to try using it on a clean install of Mac OS X to make sure that's not the case.

I don't know what hardware you're running it on, but I've definitely felt like recently Apple is aggressively trying to thin the hurd by squeezing the list of compatible hardware with their software. It's getting somewhat Windows like in that I'm starting to see there are apps that won't run on Intel Macs pre 2009, so there may be hiccups in even more recent software only designed to run effectively on the most recent crop of Macs. Somehow I find it highly unlikely that Apple would develop their own in-house software on a buggy IDE for too long.
