There's no "wasting" numbers. Software versioning is not strictly decimal; there would be no issue with having a 14.11 update, for instance.

I think you were ok as it was initially listed. iPadOS is a separate distinct OS with features that aren’t in iOS, it’s as much of a “marketing name” for iOS as iOS is a “marketing name” for macOS.

Seems that way. Have RC on my iPhone 12 Pro and it doesn’t list an update in settings and the build is the same.
Haven’t experienced this is any of the 14.4 beta‘s - but I know everyone is different. Been running it on my iPhone 11 Pro and 12 Pro.
14.4 hasn't yet been released to the public so no updates will show for anyone on the RC even if the release is a newer build. It'll likely be about an hour.

Ah! My bad. I read the title as “Apple Released”. I rarely see articles with announcements of imminent releases these days and assumed it was an official release. Apologies.
It’s absolutely no different from how things were done previously — most features available for both iPhone and iPad, some (like the Phone app) for iPhone only, and some (like non-accessibility cursor support) for iPad only. The only difference is the marketing name, which is why when iOS and “iPadOS” releases are published, their build numbers are identical and the releases happen at the same time. Sometimes Apple will release an update only for iPhone or iPad, but not both, if a bug is impacting specific device models, but surely you get the idea.
No they haven’t. iPadOS is nothing like watchOS or tvOS where the operating system was formed from iOS and deserved a new name.

What's wrong with the notification? Still on 13.7 on iPhone, but my iPad on 14.02 seems more or less fine so just wondering.
It's fixed. I just tested it with a MagSafe case. After installing the case the lock sound is still normal.

I wonder when will iOS support swipe keyboard input. I mean all other Earth languages, not just English. 3rd party keyboards are slow (and presumably less secure).
In its Black History Month announcement this morning, Apple has confirmed that iOS 14.4 and watchOS 7.3 will be released later today.
watchOS 7.3 expands the ECG app on the Apple Watch Series 4 and newer to Japan, Mayotte, Thailand, and the Philippines, while iOS 14.4 introduces a notification on iPhone 12 models with non-genuine cameras. Both software updates also add support for a new "Unity" watch face based on the Pan-African flag and contain several bug fixes.
