As to the CarPlay "enhancements"; I'm clearly missing something.

  • Car Camera: This app will display the vehicle's rear-view camera feed. [The car already does that.]
  • Charge: For electric vehicles, this app will display battery level, charging status, time remaining until the battery is fully charged, and more. [I don't have an EV, but I would assume they would already do that?]
  • Climate: This app will provide access to a vehicle's climate controls within CarPlay, allowing you to adjust the temperature of the A/C or heating system, fan speed, heated seats, heated steering wheel, and more. [The advantage of doing that on the phone rather than with the car's controls escapes me.]
  • Closures: This app will display if any of the vehicle's doors are opened, and it might also display vehicle warning symbols. [Car already does that.]
  • Media: This app will provide access to FM and AM radio station controls within CarPlay, along with other media options like SiriusXM. It is unclear if SiriusXM will offer satellite connectivity, or remain limited to internet streaming. Users will be able to select from a list of music genres, such as Top 40 and Rock. [Car already does that, or did that. I let Sirius lapse after the free trial. And the car's radio controls even work while wearing gloves.]
  • Tire Pressure: This app will display air pressure for each of the vehicle's tires, and provide low pressure, high pressure, and flat tire warnings. [Car already does that.]
  • Trips: This app will provide a variety of driving-related data, including the vehicle's average speed, fuel efficiency or energy efficiency, the total time elapsed and distance traveled on a trip, and more. [The car has two trip meters already with independent MPG calculators. It also has a clock.]
The intent is two fold:

1. So you don’t have to exit CarPlay in order to check those things.

2. To implement them in a manner that is consistent across all vehicles.

Looking forward to Sony, Microsoft, Steam, Tesla, Amazon Kindle, Nintendo, and all other digital companies having to also deal with these onerous rules. Otherwise it’s targeted. So get on with it, EU!
It is targeted at those companies that have been designated as gatekeepers.

Podcast transcripts and SharePlay for HomePod are nice additions. Majority of changes are happening in EU

I'm not understanding. When the 17.4 update will come, I'm going to be able to use other app stores, browsers and NFC payment providers on my iPhone. With POSSIBLE security issues or POSSIBLE malfunctions with this trhird party apps.
But if I don't want anything of that, I can normaly use my phone with app store, safari and Apple Pay, just never use "external applications and services", right?

If that's not the case, please, tell me after the update what's the difference between an Android Phone (Pixel for example) and an iPhone...

P.s. Sorry for my bad english ;)

It’s supposed in the that way. Definitely, you should have an option to choose or not to choose alternative AppStores and payments.

Hopefully there wont be an exodus of app creators and they will keep a presence on both the app store and their own store. Because if they leave the app store i'm not downloading it from a third party place.

Of course.

There are more differences between iOS and Android than choice of App Store, browser or NFC payment provider.

You wouldn’t say „there‘s no difference between Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS“ just because they both allow choice of web browser and software installation from external (non-Microsoft/Apple) sources, would you?

And more useless emoji's. As for RCS support, I get texts from iPhones and Android fine. Apathy rules on that one. What I can't get are attachments, and that's just fine. Attachments are probably scams or viruses anyway. Any message starting with "download this document immediately for your Free" (it varies) is deleted at once.

Re: CarPlay. Indeed, they do not seem to be introducing anything new vs car’s own system, so it looks like they need all of these new CarPlay apps to integrate better with the dashboards and extra screens. Should be fun, considering some car manufacturers still struggle with CarPlay V1.

Correct, you will just have an extra choice, without loosing anything you already have. You can still stick to Apple’s own services, if you prefer. Just think on how it is on a Mac, it should be quite similar.

files.app suffer from bad ergonomics on small screen, for example: iphone 12 mini.
the search bar is always visible, using full screen width, wasting screen space for no good reason.
it would be better to have a "search" entry in the tree dots menu, and only when user click it , then show the search bar. making it toggleable on demand. also, it would be better if every app out there would have the option to export/import/save/load/share documents to files.app. it seems like at apple, they develop these tools but don't actualy use them, so they never see the flaws and little problems. files.app need more functionalities. it is supposed to be a very central piece of software in ios. but instead it is left as it is, rarely updated. it lacks polish to make it more usable.

some intermediary needs to store the messages before forwarding. In the case of Imessage, it is Apple while the cell companies do SMS.
Apple will likely create their own RCS cloud just like Google has Jibe (which everyone else uses). And the two will be interoperable, pushing us into another duopoly.

How about the feature that lets me stay connected to the internet??? Bloody hell Apple. They have known about this problem for many months. And still no fix!

I’d be very surprised if they are as current head units are unlikely to have access to all the CANbus data needed to be able to show the additional vehicle status stuff which seems to be most of the “new” in new CarPlay.
I have a Mercedes W211 and bought an Android head unit during the summer. I was surprised by the amount of canbus information that headunit receives. This concludes:

Doors
Reversing
Reversing camera
Headlights(Night/Day

However, I don’t know whether communication is one way or two way to at least enable features such as FM via CarPlay. At minimum I would like that and the reversing camera App in car play. Not a deal breaker thought as I rarely use FM radio and my headunit switches between CarPlay and reversing camera is 0.5sec.
