Yes, I understand the marketing reasons. The point being made about iPad 1 is on the technical aspect.

Me and others expect Apple to support the hardware if technical feasible. This seems to be the case based on the support of the 3GS.

LOL Apple supporting stomething because it is techincal feasible... Sorry but Apple's moves is all about making profit.

Unless you want to explain why the Siri is 4S only, why the first iPhone never for MMS, Voice control lock outs ect.

Apple does a lot of force obsolete to make people upgrade.

The sensor on the orginal iPad can handle the multiple touch commands like 4-5 finger to bring in for the home screen but they do not allow it. That is a software block. There is ZERO hardware reason to block that.

The original iPad got the 4-5 finger multitasking gestures in 5.0.1

The keynote is 90 minutes long. A good 30 minutes total or so is fluff, self back-patting, and demos.

That leaves 60 minutes for real announcements. I think 30 minutes for iOS, 15 minutes for Mountain Lion, and 15 minutes for something else (hardware refresh, AppleTV developer API, or something like that).

With iOS they will do the whole "tentpole" thing where they'll talk about 3-5 major areas and then say "over 200 new features we didn't talk about are in iOS 6".... 50% of which will just be new API calls for devs.

Mountain Lion will most likely be a complete rehash of what we already know with maybe a thing or two thrown in, as well as pricing and release date.

Let's keep expectations low people. Apple probably isn't going to blow anyone away (at least from people here on the forums daily).

I've learned my lesson year after year after year with over-predicting Apple events.

The iPad 1 is two years old and is no longer being supported by Apple. That is ridiculous. I refuse to buy new hardware every two years to receive new software features!

That is 100% lame if iOS 6 is supported for iPhone 4 but not the original iPad.

5+ years old Macs can still run the latest OS. I guess they're treating the iPad just like cell phones and every 2 years is pretty much the max lifespan for such devices.

And half the bloody RAM!!!

I'm more surprised at the 3GS being supported when the iPad 1st gen is not.

I really though all the "A" CPU devices were a cert, it's strange when you consider the 3GS and iPad 1 have identical RAM but the iPad carries a better CPU. The iPhone 4 with 512mb of RAM and an 800MHz A4 is a no brainer.

The iPad may have a better CPU, but it is needed for 5 times as many pixels. They both have the same GPU, so that doesn't help the iPad.

It makes perfect sense that the iPod touch 4th Gen will get ios 6 since it is the only iPod device that is still in production. The ipad 1 has been replaced by newer devices

I'd guess iOS 6 is coming to the 3GS because they are still selling it with a 2 year contract.

Agreed. Keep expectations realistic and you'll enjoy the keynote and perhaps be surprised.

Although, I really hope Tim Cook has worked on his presentation skills. He really needs to speed things up as it can be somewhat tedious listening to him talk (he has a slower Houston accent and he tends to pause to think).

I'm really hoping we see Mountain Lion Gold Master to developers tomorrow!!

How does it not make sense? Apple still sell the 3GS. They do not sell the iPad 1 anymore.

My statement is not based on what they sell...it is based on the hardware specs of the devices...Yes Apple still sells the 3GS but I would never ever buy one. I would still consider an original iPad.

Anyone using the first iPad on iOS 5.0 knows how much the machine slows down with only a few apps open. I'm glad that there is no iOS 6.0 so that my iPad won't suck more and the developers will care about supporting iOS 5.0 for as long as the next 1-2 years.

You must be kidding if you think the iPad 1 is as powerful as the iPhone 4. The same components are driving a lot of pixels on a much larger screen and the iPad has only 256MB RAM.

Lets hope there is no support for iPad 1.

It doesn't make sense that the iPad 1 will not support iOS 6 but the weaker iPhone 3GS and 4 will, unless there's some iPad specific changes in iOS 6 which the iPad 1 simply can't handle, but even then you could restrict that functionality like Apple did with iOS 4 on the 3G.

why should the iPad 1 get it over the iPhone 4?

apple must have its reasons for withholding the update from the first iPad,
iv recently played with a ipad1 running 5.1.1 and it was really slow, and had trouble picking up the multi touch gestures

The iPad 1 has a faster CPU, though it has half the RAM. There's no reason why the 3GS would support it but not the iPad 1, unless as I said, there's some specific iPad improvement(s) in iOS 6 which are too much for the iPad 1 to handle, but they should be able restrict said functionality like with iOS 4 on the 3G.

depending on what features iOS 6 comes with, i don't see the 3GS getting them all, like you said with the 3G, it got some.

we won't know for sure till tomorrow, for all we know the first iPad might get iOS 6.

I don't quite understand why the iPad 1 will not be supported. It is just as powerful as the iPhone 4.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_obsolescence

"Instilling in the buyer the desire to own something a little newer, a little better, a little sooner than is necessary."

It's not necessary for you to run iOS 6. You could continue to keep using your first generation iPad on iOS 5 and be happy with that. But by dropping support for it you start to feel disappointed and "left behind". So you'll likely end up buying a New iPad to replace it in the end, getting Apple another sale.

/me awaits downvotes by fanbois for saying something that, regardless of being true, casts Apple in a negative light.
