Nice to see the 3Gs supported but I'm not sure about running it, unless Apple has made the iOS lean and mean so it supports the older hardware.

It will be nice to see some reports from users.

Also wasn't iOS5 supported when in beta but dropped after? I guess one of the reasons for this is to test how well the new iOS runs on older hardware, if there are too many problems then it's dropped.

Sorry if this has been covered, haven't had time to read all of the last 283 posts LOL

The decision of what device is supported is arbitrary. Remember Apple controls the hardware AND the software.

I am not talking about running OSX on Apple II. But if iOS6 can be run on 3gs, there is no reason it can't be run on iPad 1. Unless, Apple simply made a decision not to support it. It's the same about Lion not supported older mac. Lion doesn't require any more processing power than Snow Leopard, but Apple simply made a decision to stop supporting older machine.

why should the iPad 1 get it over the iPhone 4?

apple must have its reasons for withholding the update from the first iPad,
iv recently played with a ipad1 running 5.1.1 and it was really slow, and had trouble picking up the multi touch gestures

I have an iPad 1 with 5.1.1 running on it and it is pretty fast. I compared it to the the iPad 2 and new iPad, and didn't see that much different in speed. It scrolls smoothly, apps open up quick, and programs run smoothly. All the people that say there original iPad is slow, what are you running in the background that makes it run so slow?

Please don't generalize that every iPad 1 is slow with 5.1.1, because, as you have read in this forum, not everyone is having your slowdown.

It is a shame that it looks like the iPad 1 is not going to get 6.0. But, some of us don't have 500 to 850 to throw away on a new iPad every year. I know I could trade in my iPad 1, and get around 195 from Apple(gift card) or other companies that have trade ins. But I still would have to kick in another 500 to 700 just to stay up to date. I was hoping to use this for a few more years. But with the lack of support coming for the iPad 1, no newer apps or features will be available for a device I expected to be useful for, at least, a couple of more years. I guess I will have an expensive paper weight, just like my Apple 2C.

I seem to recall that the A4 in the original iPad is faster than the A4 in both the 4th gen iPod touch and the iPhone 4. Also that it is way faster than the CPU in the iPhone 3GS. Similarly, I seem to recall that the third gen iPod touch has faster innards than the iPhone 3GS, leading me to wonder exactly how and why support is being dropped for the first gen iPad and the third gen iPod touch and not the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4, and both the 3rd and 4th gen iPod touches. Though to be fair, iOS 5 is not as smooth on A4 devices as iOS 4 was or as iOS 5 is on A5 devices.

iPod touch 3G has exactly the same power as iPhone 3GS. Only iPod touch 2G is more powerful than its iPhone equivalent(iPhone 3G).

I have a bad feeling that iOS6 won't see a public release until a new iPhone or Apple TV set in Fall. The first four iOS releases were within a few weeks of WWDC, then last year had a 4-month lag because of the iPhone 4S!

Fingers crossed...

depending on what features iOS 6 comes with, i don't see the 3GS getting them all, like you said with the 3G, it got some.

we won't know for sure till tomorrow, for all we know the first iPad might get iOS 6.
Yep, I can't wait! I'm staying up to follow the live (text) feed!

It doesn't make sense that the iPad 1 will not support iOS 6 but the weaker iPhone 3GS and 4 will, unless there's some iPad specific changes in iOS 6 which the iPad 1 simply can't handle, but even then you could restrict that functionality like Apple did with iOS 4 on the 3G.

I think this has to do with how Apple accounts for its i devices. When they switched to a two year distribution for the accounting of the items one of the reasons given was for the free updates. The 3GS' hardware was updated less than two years ago, that is not true of the iPad 1.

I knew this day would come. My original iPad 3G serves me really well. But Apple might not support new versions of iOS on it. That doesn't kill it off immediately, but surely the writing is on the wall.

*sigh* I'm totally waiting for an iPad 4 now.

Was already going to move form an iPhone 4 to an iPhone 5 ASAP– though my 4 just can't do Siri so far.

It's not in mainstream, only refurbished status.

Really!? Sigh. That's the refurbished and clearance section. Yes, technically they're selling it but only to clearance them out.

Apple would stop selling them if they weren't planning to support them with the update.

After tomorrow they're gone or supported. I doubt anything else would happen.

They're not mainstream sellable, IMO, it's just stock clearance, and isn't something considered in software updates.

What do you mean "switched to a two year distribution"?
its going to be 4am in the morning for me, so won't be saying awake. but will be checking all the news at 6am!

hopefully the keynote video will be out by then
Ehh, it's 2 AM in the morning for me and I've got a 9 AM start but I'm going to do it anyway. Probably pull an all-nighter because I can't get to sleep before 11 or 12 right now anyway.

I think this was answered earlier, but isn't it because the iphone 4 has 512 mb ram and the iPad (1) has 256mb?

Siri on iPhone 4

LOL Apple supporting stomething because it is techincal feasible... Sorry but Apple's moves is all about making profit.

Unless you want to explain why the Siri is 4S only, why the first iPhone never for MMS, Voice control lock outs ect.

I've tried running Siri on my jailbroken iPhone 4. The phone bogs down tremendously, because apparently Siri is always there, eating up RAM. Even launching Safari occasionally took more than 45 seconds. I uninstalled it - it messed with the iPhone too much.

That said, it's technically possible for Siri to run, but the impact on the UX is terrible. It was unacceptable to me. To the normal public, it would be a broken POS.

It's a marketing / business decision that the original iPad isn't supported. Apples does what Apple wants. It's their prerogative.

Right - and last time I checked I am the customer and I do want I want first off and second express my wishes as they fit my needs.

Congratulations for your job at :apple: sales by the way.

Much better than an android product which is not good for one year. Also plenty of apps will still work on your iPad 1.

It could be, but the iPhone 3GS only has 256MB of RAM and a much slower CPU.

Not much slower, the architecture is the same, Cortex-A8, but slightly lower clocked, at the same time though it has much less pixels to push.

And CPU doesn't matter much at all when it comes to the UI, since it's GPU that handles it in iOS, 3GS and 4 have the same GPU.
