I still use an app that hasn't updated in six years. Aside the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen it still does exactly what I want and I haven't found anything better. Old apps are not always bad apps.
I do the same, with two apps actually.

No idea how to tell if Apple have removed it, and if that means I'll never be able to download it again.
Just search for the app's name in the App Store.

The only reason i prefer ios over android is for the apps quality. But these days, most of the apps is a mess in the store except games and reputed ones. Even if you look in the top charts, most of the apps are still with ugly old icons and UI and has never been updated with the latest guidelines.

I hope they do take this seriously and do something about it.

Maybe that's the whole idea. Appshopper doesn't want to get on Apple's radar by issuing an update for their app and alerting them that such an app exists. I know that's the case with toucharcade.
?? Is that part of the process? I figured Apple has a way to automate and notify of any app that's not up to their standards. I figured that's all independent of whether an update was recently done. In fact, I thought an update would make things better, showing Apple that they are heading towards compliancy (although whether or not they make it there would be another thing entirely).

I think more importantly they should be reinventing the interface and design of the App Store.

I agree but it's a good thing to get rid of the old apps that don't work right on newer versions of iOS. It benefits Apple to do this by keeping the quality on par. This also may be a preemptive task to a new or improved design forthcoming.

It'd be nice if there was some kind of forward-compatibility built into these apps.

Forward compatibility works just fine with some apps. I have 2 apps last updated in 2010 that still run on my iOS 10.1 iPhone 7. I suppose it depends on how careful/paranoid/lucky the developer was in coding and using various iOS APIs.

Good. Now all they need is a search engine, which actually finds things.
Can't they just licence amazon's search engine? It is by far superior. :)

Please tell me you were being sarcastic when you said that Amazon's search engine is superior.

I can't recall the last time I searched for ANYTHING on Amazon, and only got a listing of items that met my search criteria.

More importantly, they really should improve their search. It sucks so much that if I'm looking for a specific app, I'll search in google and let the browser open the app store.

WTF Apple. You are keen to remove good and usable ports from the new Macbook Pro,yet you only managed to remove less than 50k apps? If you only put half the effort you did into removing ports from Macbook Pro, we would see half a million apps being removed, not 50k. Most of my searches for new apps bring junk from 2012-2013 or older. Unless somewhere on the way there, I hear half a million or million outdated apps gets removed, 10-50k a month is a drop in a sea and nothing to be excited about.

All it requires is opening the project in the latest version of Xcode, making sure it's set to compile to 64-bit, archiving, and uploading to the App Store. All of 5 minutes of work.
It is not that easy for everyone. Not all apps are made in Xcode and not all apps were built in the newest supported SDK. Perhaps you should do some research. Crazy, I know.

I still think this is a bad move on Apple, as you'll have a perfectly functioning app removed just because u just chose not to update it to iOS 10...

Apple may be doing good, but this is forcing developers to stay current.. Pitty they can't have the same power end users do and flick a 'switch' to say "I'm choose not to update to iOS10" but seems its more like "if u wanna be on the App Store, u will"

Soooo easy! I'm sure you were able to do it all in a click of the mouse with your app! Right click "64-bit". Right click "Send to App Store". So easy a MacRumors commenter can do it!
Old dependencies and deprecated methods in iOS libraries are an issue but still shouldn't be a huge problem to fix if you really care about your app. And I don't know what you're doing if your app won't run properly when compiled in 64-bit mode.

I think more importantly they should be reinventing the interface and design of the App Store.
And also make it faster. For whatever reason, it takes forever to load the store page, though the app downloads are fast enough.

This is also very bad news for iPhone 2G owners. Thankfully there are non-Apple methods of getting apps for iPhone 2G, and these will now become an absolute necessity.

I said it was superior. I am being sarcastic as for licensing.
I apologize if I hurt your feelings.

You sure? Recently tried to find "Apple TV 4" on Amazon, and did not get one hit for the product itself.

Strange, unless ... Amazon rigs its search results for certain competing products NOT to show up ;)

Apple TV is not being sold on amazon.

Indeed.
I own a couple of games that gave a warning running in iOS 10 (something like "...needs to be updated..")
These games work fine, but are surely "outdated".

If I erase my device, does that app install again after an iCloud restore?
I would bet no. You need to restore from your local iTunes library.
One reason I never rely on iCloud only.

iOS 10.1 sends a warning if the app is not compiled with 64bit support.
Eventually those app will be removed, but is not going to happen soon.

good move...
there are a ton of apps that have not been updated for 3-5 years! Its still on the store and buyers will be very upset to pay for it and then discover it just doesn't work.

Normally I would agree, but seeing how they tend to mess stuff up a lot with other apps I'm glad whenever they leave things unchanged...

Wow, back in 2011 (when I got my current Mac) I wouldn't have dreamt of saying something like that about Apple...

Hmm, you could just ask for your money back...
Or improve iOS' abysmal backwards compatibility.
And derank old apps in results, which by the way quite often might not make that much of a difference, because sometimes a niche is only filled by a single, old app.
No more says Apple!

If your needs aren't covered by the few additional apps the average users downloads you're clearly asking for too much. (also, why the hell are there still not a lot more badges in the App Store for technologies an App support whilst we're talking about pushing modern technology? There's one for Wallet (99% airline apps... zzzzZZzZzzz), Apple Pay and Game Center and that's it...)

What I want to know is why the UK Lloyds banking app still has an outdated resolution... They own money. Surely they could have updated it now. Really annoys me for some reason.
