When the Dukes of Hazard gets banned, THEN it's gone too far....

i think Hulu dropped those episodes because of that if i am not mistaken

Very knee-jerk unintelligent response from Apple to just take a nuke bomb to Confederate Flag usage rather than use a scalpel and remove the tripe but leave items of a true historical and educational genre in tact -- including tactical games.

Rather than take a leadership position here it uncharacteristically moves with the lemmings. What I find particularly disturbing about these moves by Apple, Amazon, etc., is that they are kowtowing to attempts to cleanse history, not just support the discontinuation of a controversial officially state sanctioned symbol to a museum. It's quite the cliche but this whole banning solely because it offends certain people or groups is very Orwellian and its chilling to see so many people cheering it on. Open and free minds should be for more free speech not less. Yes, some speech is offensive but that's part of the concept of free speech.

Clearly it's Apple's prerogative to ban anything it chooses. But banning history sets a terrible precedent. Plenty of other ugly history on sale on Amazon. The Confederate Flag was singled out because of the angry mob. What will the mob select to remove next to clean up their narrative?

As a "Jewish New Yorker" do you have the same feelings if the issue were people choosing to stop selling the Nazi swastika flag?

I'm not a Jewish New Yorker, but a Virginian one. I don't believe history should be banned. Period. Of course I'm offended, sickened, and scared when I see people with swatstika tattoos or paraphernalia. But the concept of free speech isn't "speech I agree with," it's the freedom to speak one's mind, no matter what kind of filth comes out of it, or is displayed, as long as it doesn't put another in direct physical harm or damage another's property. It's encapsulated in Evelyn Beatrice Hall famous quote "I disapprove of what you say but I'll defend to death your right to say it."

Like others have said, it's one thing to fly the flag over state or government buildings, quite another to depict it in media. It amounts to willfully forgetting and white-washing history, and in many cases, that can be just as bad if not worse than what such symbols had stood for.

Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

Pretty much says it all...

I'm okay with Democrats; I'm okay with Republicans. Most of the people that are moderate are thinking logically. The more extreme you get on either side the more problems tend to arise in their thought process. Tim Cook is proving to be far more extreme leftist than I thought he was.

First of all, on iOS, you don't have the right to create your own app store.

Second, are you implying war games are "hateful crap"?

I didn't say your own iOS store. You also have a right to create your own app ecosystem, or God forbid go Android.

And nope - I love war games. I probably even love some Civil War games, but that doesn't mean I disagree with a refusal to sell something that offers a symbol of hatred in an incorrect historical light and therefore has no redeeming qualities (back to my assumption that this is not simply a blanket ban, but has been done based on inaccurate over use of the Dixie Cross specifically). All of these games could easily modify their content to represent the correct historically accurate symbols, a small subsection of which would include the Dixie Cross. No problems there.

This is akin to what Disney did when they released their old Mickey Mouse cartoons on DVC. They had Leonard Maltin come on in the beginning to tell people, "Now back in the day, they showed cartoons smoking and..." What a load of crap.

Excellent post that sums up my thoughts very nicely.

So is it ok or not for a private, non governmental entity to exercise its own freedom of speech and refuse to sell something it feels is offensive, hurtful and backwards looking?

and then we have games like GTA......my god this co. is getting out of hand with not trying to be offensive.

I'm offended by everyone who is offended by everything.

No, but its very hypocritical of them to go with the winds of change when they haven't even addressed Apps like the official Washington Redskins App. They don't want to risk losing $$$ by ticking off the NFL, but they can pick on lesser App owners. It's cowardly PC posturing.

I think it's ridiculous as well. Unfortunately I think it may be a cover all bases move to avoid conflicts with a potential influx of apps with a racist tone. It's easier to have a blanket policy for now than have app reviewers make decisions about historical vs racist apps. Hopefully this is temporary. I'm not defending their decision at all, I'm just trying to figure out why they made the decision.

Sadly he is telling the truth. The Germans have very strict laws about it. I disagree with it though. Historical revisionism is absolutely ridiculous.

Actually, historical revisionism is the historically best thing possible, so long as revisions are correct info.

As for this issue, I'm not pro-Confederate/Flag. But I find this to be an utterly ridiculous Apple response.

But we're talking about Apple and what Apple did. Nothing is resolved by mentioning "Android".

The "historically accurate symbols" are just as hateful, aren't they? I've been hearing this all day and it doesn't make any sense. The battle flag is immediately recognizable and has long been the standard used in games to identify the Confederacy.

This is utterly ridiculous - the implication is that Apple should allow a Civil War game if and only if exact Confederate flags used in the battles in the game content are accurate. Which would, in some cases, be the battle flag.

I must reiterate that ANY symbol of the Confederacy is "hateful" and a symbol of slavery, because it is generally accepted today that the raison d'être of the Confederacy was preserving the institution of slavery.

No one said Apple should go out and ban all hurtful, offensive things. What people have said is that Apple is laudable for having banned one particular hurtful, offensive thing. Maybe they would be even more laudable for banning more hurtful, offensive things, I don't know. We'll see if/when they do it. It's their choice, and your choice to stop giving them money in protest. I'm sure your protest will register strongly while Tim Cook is doing his third lap in his giant gold coin swimming-pool-vault.

This is the same argument as the people who say it's no big deal because people just meant it as a symbol of "Southern Pride." It doesn't matter what was meant when the reality is that it only exists as a recognizable symbol today because of hatred, racism and evil. Once you understand why it became the symbol it did, and why it has limited historical accuracy as a generic symbol, there is a duty to correct the misuse. When you obstinately refuse to do so because you just didn't "mean" any harm originally, you compound the problem.
