See his comments about free speech in the context of a private company's actions. "Free speech" has nothing to do with this situation. That is what my comment was about.

You can. There are lot's of tablets and smart phones outside Apple's ecosystem, you just don't want to, and thus you're gonna see what they care to sell you.
Your "fix" is to not have games about the Civil War, and here is where I kindly show you the door.
History can't be erased so easily.
This confederate flag was chosen by hate groups as their symbol. It didn't start with Dylann Roof, but his actions helped more people associate the flag with those hate groups, and with his terrorism.
Those who wanted to keep the Confederate flag as merely an historical relic (or a symbol of southern pride) didn't do enough to protect its image from violent and hateful misuse. It was negligence on their part that has allowed this backlash to happen. If they had stood up earlier and defended the flag against use as a symbol of hate, maybe it wouldn't have come to this.
Black people have long said that they see the Confederate flag as a warning to them to stay "in their place", or as an outright threat to their safety. Practically nothing has been done to make black southerners see the flag as a symbol of pride rather than oppression.
Dylann Roof murder spree isn't an isolated incident, and the flag didn't just now become controversial because of him. The morning after his attack that took the lives of 9 people, the Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling which said that Texas has the right to deny groups that want specialty license plates with a Confederate flag symbol.
The US flag doesn't reach the same level of controversy. It's possible that it could someday be coopted by hate groups, and become so toxic that most people want to distance themselves from it. Perhaps your statement, you want to help that happen.
Apple: "Let's pretend that the Civil War never happened and that the Confederate flag never existed."
Where did I say that? My solution is the REMARKABLY easy one to change a few pixels. BOOM problem solved. Where's that door?
Change the pixels to what, exactly?
Historically accurate symbols. SOME of which, for a few units, MIGHT be something resembling the Dixie Cross - but only for the elements of the Army of the Tennessee and a modified version for elements of the Army of NOVA. It's ALMOST like you're not actually reading the thread...
I'm black also and I think the gamification of the largest attack against the US government for the purpose of continuing the human rights abuses against black people should certainly be condemned. You can create war games without needing the backdrop of the Confederacy and Civil War. History lessons are provided via books, classes and museums.
Those are ALL offensive symbols!
Not really
MacRumors did a spot check of the App Store and can confirm that Apple has removed dozens of Civil War games depicting the Confederate Flag,
A sampling of the Civil War games removed from the App Store:
Ultimate General: Gettysburg
AAA American Civil War Cannon Shooter
Civil War: Hidden Mysteries
Civil War The Battle Game
Civil War Defense
Civil War Battle Defense
1861 A Civil War Rebellion
Civil War: 1862
Civil War: 1863
Update 12:10 p.m. Pacific Time: In a statement provided to Buzzfeed, Apple has confirmed that it is removing apps that use the Confederate flag in "offensive or mean-spirited ways."
Maybe I'm not reading you right, but since when has a GTA game ever tried to be anything but a GTA game?
So under that same rule basically any Bible/Torah/Quran app should be removed as well.
The argument, is that the apps that Apple pulled were not glorifying slavery, racism, etc. They were games that used those symbols to represent the Confederacy.
This. As a history student, this bothers me.
Are all WWII and Civil War games going to be removed from the App Store?
...or where they just a representation of our history?
It seems that some here do not understand the difference between 'PC BS' and simply being polite and respectful. As others have noted here again and again, the flag has been misrepresented and misused. In that the flag offends so many and represents a shameful past of slavery, tragic war, and violence against civil rights workers, why not ban it? Red and blue flags could suffice to denote units in a war game.
Apple's store, Apple's rules.
