You can. There are lot's of tablets and smart phones outside Apple's ecosystem, you just don't want to, and thus you're gonna see what they care to sell you.

I know, but I still cling to the idea that a tablet is like any other computer, and Apple's job is to provide what 3rd parties are offering, regardless of the content. I like to think it's more up to me to decide what I want, even if that means I have to put up with some dreck every once in awhile.

It's more a "way I'd like things to be" rather than "something that should be", I'll admit.

Just to add to most sentiment on here, this is pretty ridiculous. Yes it was a dark period in history, but it certainly was not the only one. If you're gonna remove Civil War games then you must remove all WW2 games and any other war game for that matter.

History can't be erased so easily.

This confederate flag was chosen by hate groups as their symbol. It didn't start with Dylann Roof, but his actions helped more people associate the flag with those hate groups, and with his terrorism.

Those who wanted to keep the Confederate flag as merely an historical relic (or a symbol of southern pride) didn't do enough to protect its image from violent and hateful misuse. It was negligence on their part that has allowed this backlash to happen. If they had stood up earlier and defended the flag against use as a symbol of hate, maybe it wouldn't have come to this.

Black people have long said that they see the Confederate flag as a warning to them to stay "in their place", or as an outright threat to their safety. Practically nothing has been done to make black southerners see the flag as a symbol of pride rather than oppression.

Dylann Roof murder spree isn't an isolated incident, and the flag didn't just now become controversial because of him. The morning after his attack that took the lives of 9 people, the Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling which said that Texas has the right to deny groups that want specialty license plates with a Confederate flag symbol.

The US flag doesn't reach the same level of controversy. It's possible that it could someday be coopted by hate groups, and become so toxic that most people want to distance themselves from it. Perhaps your statement, you want to help that happen.

No.

Change the pixels to what, exactly?

Historically accurate symbols. SOME of which, for a few units, MIGHT be something resembling the Dixie Cross - but only for the elements of the Army of the Tennessee and a modified version for elements of the Army of NOVA. It's ALMOST like you're not actually reading the thread...

Those are ALL offensive symbols!

I wonder when they will back pedal from this like every other knee jerk reaction they have been doing lately? I don't think this would have happened under Steve's watch. If this is typical California mentality, I definitely don't want to move there. By them removing it is more offensive than it being within the game. When will this PC BS madness end?! I blame the millennials! Praise Zeus I am not one of them!

I'm black also and I think the gamification of the largest attack against the US government for the purpose of continuing the human rights abuses against black people should certainly be condemned. You can create war games without needing the backdrop of the Confederacy and Civil War. History lessons are provided via books, classes and museums.

So basically you want to censor every movie, game or book if it displays a symbol that is offensive to a group of people?
We have gotten way to sensitive. I will not let a symbol put me down. I'm stronger than that.

Dumb move if they just blindly removes everything.

Bought Civilization Revolution a long time ago. Going to assume it got auto banned just because it probably has a Civil War campaign.

Can Apple also ban games with the American Flag...you know for kinda getting away with genocide of the Native Americans?

If Steam follows Apple and starts banning games too..would actually be pissed.

While we're banning games, can we also ban movies too.

Those are ALL offensive symbols!

So now you're clearly not reading my posts. Ok - thanks for playing.

For others paying attention - the issue is that the Dixie Cross, specifically, has a specific, terrible meaning and it was not an important generic catchall Confederate symbol in the 1860's. It BECAME that symbol, and was used accordingly, after the 1950's desegregation fight. Game developers, wrongly and generally innocently, misused it, misunderstanding the Dixie Cross's true nature. Its use as a generic "Confederate" symbol is thus inappropriate and should (and can easily) be eliminated from electronic media. To the extent ABSOLUTE accuracy is required or used, I would find it acceptable to use the Dixie Cross symbol in a context where it actually appeared, but not as it is typically used - the generic "Confederate" symbol.

MacRumors did a spot check of the App Store and can confirm that Apple has removed dozens of Civil War games depicting the Confederate Flag,

A sampling of the Civil War games removed from the App Store:

Ultimate General: Gettysburg
AAA American Civil War Cannon Shooter
Civil War: Hidden Mysteries
Civil War The Battle Game
Civil War Defense
Civil War Battle Defense
1861 A Civil War Rebellion
Civil War: 1862
Civil War: 1863

Update 12:10 p.m. Pacific Time: In a statement provided to Buzzfeed, Apple has confirmed that it is removing apps that use the Confederate flag in "offensive or mean-spirited ways."

I really have trouble believing that over a dozen Civil War games use the flag in offensive or mean-spirited ways. You'd have to prove it to me.

Furthermore, this is utter hypocrisy on Apple's part. If they are mean spirited today, they were mean spirited two weeks ago! Apple never should have let them on the app store in the first place.

Now you're trying to go back and "clean up" because you're afraid of public opinions? Does this horrible external event suddenly make you look bad? This one reeks, Apple.

So under that same rule basically any Bible/Torah/Quran app should be removed as well.

That is logically correct. Under this current wave of liberal tyranny were watching, crosses and many other symbols have to go.

The US flag should have to go too if there is any honesty to this movement, but then of course you would be proving Rush Limbaugh right.

Leave our history alone, leave freedom of expression alone. The people crying out for removal of these symbols from retailers, apps, etc are on the wrong side of free expression. Remember, you have NO right to not be offended. As dumb as some of the things some people say or the opinions they have, they are free to have those views.

It seems that some here do not understand the difference between 'PC BS' and simply being polite and respectful. As others have noted here again and again, the flag has been misrepresented and misused. In that the flag offends so many and represents a shameful past of slavery, tragic war, and violence against civil rights workers, why not ban it? Red and blue flags could suffice to denote units in a war game.

Apple's store, Apple's rules.

The argument, is that the apps that Apple pulled were not glorifying slavery, racism, etc. They were games that used those symbols to represent the Confederacy.

And that's why I ask if anyone can make a case for these dozen games... Apple has NOT eliminated all references to any flag and has not pulled down all games containing specific flags.

This. As a history student, this bothers me.

Are all WWII and Civil War games going to be removed from the App Store?

Excellent example. I see swastikas in WWII games all the time.

So who exactly is so stupid that they don't understand the difference between an accurate representation of the past and an all out assault on hurting others feelings? Those that fall into that category are the ones that are agreeing with and pulling these apps. I supposed I should add, since I don't have these games, were they really doing something that is directly and actively hateful (like telling the gamer to go make slaves out of your friends) or where they just a representation of our history?

It's....a WAR game.

When has war ever been good or so one sided as propaganda or history books have taught us?

Total bs and contradictory view because, if you didn't know, I'm sure there's a ton of countries that hate the US flag.

Games striving for realism being forced to censor a certain flag just because is bad. They're rated M for a reason. Can we also remove blood, heads getting blown off, and bombs too?

Because every war has represented shame, slavery, tragedy, etc.

This whole thing really makes me want to play CoD WaW again. So many bad things but its so good. One of the best campaigns by far for the series.

"We have removed apps from the App Store that use the Confederate flag in offensive or mean-spirited ways, which is in violation of our guidelines," an Apple spokesperson told BuzzFeed News. "We are not removing apps that display the Confederate flag for educational or historical uses."

If that was truly the case, then Apple really needs to explain how in a game like Ultimate General: Gettysburg for example, that the flag is being used in offensive or mean-spirited ways. The game is nothing more than a Civil War game simulation from what I can tell, which means it's being used for historical purposes and not in offensive or mean-spirited ways.
