I don't like iTunes and I never have.

I think it is the worst thing Apple produces by a long margin. I think it needs a massive rewrite from top to bottom but will never happen.

I can't imagine why they removed this functionality other than they just accidently removed it or something.. Which makes sense, because that seems what kind of carelessness that has been put into iTunes from the beginning.

I have to tolerate iTunes because it is the interface between my computer and my IOS devices that I appreciate so much.. but I hate it. And I hate how apple works on it, how they develop it, how they make changes about it.

It is like a different company works on iTunes that does not belong to Apple.

By the way my main ringtone is MMMBop by Hanson, and I have plenty of IQ points to spare, so I don't mind.

There is an app available on the app store that lets you make ringtones from any song in your library.

Geese so much hate coming from you...what is so horrible about it....it works pretty good and i have no complaints. what more do you want...

Step 1: Choose the song in your library you want to turn in a ringtone, and select get info.

Step 2: Set the start time and stop time to match the section of the song you want to use as your ringtone.

Step 3: Convert selection to AAC.

Step 4. Drag the AAC version to your desktop.

Step 5: Get info, convert extension to .m4r

Step 6: Drag back into iTunes, and BAM! Custom ringtone, made for free.

That's an extra couple of steps. My selected tune in mp3 format can be stored on my phone which is in turn used as a ringtone by my phone when I assign it. My phone is a myTouch 3G. I can do that using the entire tune or use iTunes to select just a particular part of the tune from 1 second to 1 minutes or more. I did it with my RAZR prior to myTouch. Nothing difficult.

for anyones who's interested, i wrote an app that lets you do the same thing on your phone. i know that there's a ton of ways to already do this, but i thought it'd be useful for some to be able to do it on the go right from their phone. it's called FoneTones http://bit.ly/aPd24l for anyone who wants to check it out.

I'll give it a try, you got my 99 cents

I've been using audiko.net for a long time. The best part is that you usually don't even have to add and trim your songs because, more than likely, someone has already uploaded what you want. Worst case scenario is that you upload the song, trim & save it, then it's available for everyone to download as well.

To be honest I'm not sure why the record labels haven't squashed the site like a bug but it's been running for a long time and it works great.

Custom ringtones don't necessarily mean some horrible pop song blaring on someone's phone.
Exactly! Most of mine are from SNES games since they're catchy, loop perfectly and almost everyone stops tries to remember what they're from. It's fun to see people's reactions. My default is the airship theme from Final Fantasy IV (II in US).

I've definitely got shorter than 30 second ring tones that I've done through Garageband.
Hmm, I'll have to try it again. This was with an older version of Garageband.

Do you like WINDOZ?

Are you some sort of elitist, denying the superiority of iTunes over other apps? WAIT! What other apps?

Your kidding right? It amazes me what some adults have on their phones.

Shoot. I never even have sound on. Vibrate alerts me just fine. I have a job where I interact with other humans so some phone going off is completely rude. Isn't it that way for everyone?

Why so many negative votes on this?

I thought it was a useless display of greed by the recoding industry, if anything -- and just fine with the "feature" being gone!

They wanted to charge you the same price to make a 5 second long snippet of a song as they charged to own the whole song! Stupid!

And as people keep saying, custom ringtones were usually made with Garageband or other software anyway - saving the cost of paying twice for content you already had on your computer.

Some people's job is answering the phone.

Do you ever go home? Or not have your phone on your person?
Do you ever sleep?

So lets get this straight from the sophisticated phone snobs:

-Audible phone rings are 'completely rude' at work
-Custom ringtone users should not be over the age of 15
-Using custom ringtones is a sign of lower IQ

Did I miss anything?

I still don't understand why one would need a ringtones in any of those situations. If I'm asleep and some ******* calls me, I'm more than ecstatic that I don't have a phone ringing. Vibrate works fine in almost all cases. Yes, there are exceptions, but me having to hear your "Bird bird bird, bird is the word" ringtones in line at the grocery store serves no purpose.

Since songs are no longer fully blocked you can take any purchased track from iTunes and use it in Garageband to create your ringtone.

Wait, because he doesn't like iTunes (VERY common actually) you attack him over it and start spewing adolescent "Windoz" comments? Grow the hell up!

I (and many others) feel that iTunes is a horrible application. It's slow, bulky, can't manage large databases well, buggy, and the interface is terrible.

Oh, and there are lot's of replacements for it. You just have to open your eyes.

I finally get an iPhone and they drop this?

Haha that's fine, I have been using itunes to creat ringtones using an unofficial method anyway. Just set a song to only play a song for 30 seconds, export that and save it as an m4p and copy it to your phone!!

By this logic we should all wear essentially grey uniforms, drive the same boring sedans, live in cookie cutter homes all alike, and eat food only as sustenance.

Ring tones are about style & expression. People have fun with them, use them as points of conversation, and yeah - sometimes to intentionally annoy (usually in a lighthearted manner). You don't understand this?

I just tried this in iTunes 10 and was able to create a ringtone. Am I missing something?
