I think it was the RIAA, not ATT, that was requiring the xtra $$. ATT doesn't make any $ on iTunes downloads so why would they care. You could never buy ringtones from ATT w/ the iPhone.

That might be a possibility because my iTunes v. 8.0 tells me it can no longer perform that operation on a Protected AAC file.

By this logic we should all [...] eat food only as sustenance.

This might actually be a good thing to help with the "obesity epidemic" afflicting some parts of the world.

FTR, when I went from an iPod to a Zune, I wasn't so irritated as I had dumped iTunes for Red Chair's Anapod product. When I went from a Zune to an iPhone as my primary MP3 player, I lamented this greatly, as I think the Zune software is *much* better.

I *detest* iTunes.

If I felt I had a viable alternative to iTunes (on a Mac), I'd probably switch instantly.

Personal opinion.

And lest there be more of the "lol windoz" (or whatever the fashionable way to refer to the Windows operating system is, these days), I have an iMac, a Macbook, and an iPhone 4 (upgraded from a 3G). w/e.

As I said: personal opinion.

I *detest* iTunes.

Why, specifically? UI reasons or bugs, or what?

I really like it - keeps my music organised nicely and syncs everything to my iPhone. I haven't had any problems with it, except about 5 years ago when I tried to move the library and it was a nightmare...

Much much more annoying than song ringtones is people who feel the need to have their ringtone on TEN so everyone within earshot is annoyed. C'mon really, like you wouldn't hear it if it was on 2 or 3.

Besides that, just because you like a song doesn't mean it makes a good ringtone...I appreciate unique riffs and grooves or melodies that actually work as a ringtone...sadly alot of people (apparently) don't quite have an ear to figure that out. Some doofus in a sports clinic getting physio had his 'gangsta rap' noise-fest blast out his proof of "uniqueness" no fewer than 3 times while I was in there.....oh ya and it was on 10.

Step 1: Choose the song in your library you want to turn in a ringtone, and select get info.

Step 2: Set the start time and stop time to match the section of the song you want to use as your ringtone.

Step 3: Convert selection to AAC.

Step 4. Drag the AAC version to your desktop.

Step 5: Get info, convert extension to .m4r

Step 6: Drag back into iTunes, and BAM! Custom ringtone, made for free.

Can somebody walk a technophobe through this? I got through steps 1 - 4 fine. I can't seem to figure out how to convert it to .m4r and get it back into itunes. When I drag, nothing happens.

I also couldn't figure out how to do it in garage band. (maybe because I have an iphone 4 - which someone said didn't work with garage band rings?)

Anyway, if anyone has a link to use any of these methods that explains it in ridiculous detail, I'd be very grateful.

This may seem like a lot for some, but this method works for me. And yea, I'm working with a PC. Oh audiko.com also works really well for me.

I just drag the file onto the "Library" section of the iTunes sidebar and it automatically goes into the ringtones sub-section. then from there next time I hook up my phone I sync it to the phone.

Yes, people over 15 have ringtones

People over 15 have ringtones? Holy crap.

This nearly 65 year old is always complimented by total strangers on his Dave Brubeck "Take Five" and "Blue Rondo a la Turk" but not so much any of Dylan's more raucous tunes.

And yes, I liked the simplicity of being able to make ringtones from within iTunes. And I can spare 99 cents especially as a part of it goes as royalties. Unlike virtually all of you I don't believe in ripping off artists.

Hah. I can record any sound on either my phone or my computer, edit it in any way I want and then drag & drop it onto my cheap Nokia. For free!

What sucks with the iPhone is that everyone has the same ringtone. Everyone. Because you can only choose from a list of like 10. From that list, 7 sound like cr*p, 2 are annoying and there's only one that's okay. Original!

I just counted 25 included ring tones. Enjoy whatever phone you have and calm down.

And apparently you don't do much assuming either.

is Apple turning itself into a Microsoft ?????

making money at all costs, denying the customers' needs and feedbacks, getting away from an open system ????

This is a very insulting post. You must assume everyone or even the one person who had done this needs to have a full volumed ringtone. Have you heard of Hearing Impaired, Hard of Hearing, or Hearing disability? There are people who can't hear a poor quality, high pitch speakers (Yes, cell phone speakers suck compared to BOSE speakers). Also, if you can't handle the fact someone likes their ringtone, your more than welcome to leave the room or get out of earshot distance.

message tones

why can't we change message tones? the ones that are shipped by default are really bad. at least give us a few more decent ones in the list to choose from / allow us to import our own

Thank you to all who gave suggested about turning songs into ringtones. This process is not helping my self esteem. After many, many hours and trying every suggestion here, I'm still not getting it. Everything goes fine until the last step. Whether I drag it into my library as some suggested or double click it as others suggested, the song never ends up in ringtones. And to make matters worse, both songs that I tried actually disappeared so that now I just have 30 second clips of them. It seems like double clicking it actually made my short clip replace the longer song for some reason. If anyone has any ideas where I'm going wrong, I'd be eternally grateful. Feel free to PM me so that everybody doesn't have to suffer through this with me. Thanks in advance!!

By this logic we should all wear essentially grey uniforms, drive the same boring sedans, live in cookie cutter homes all alike, and eat food only as sustenance.

Ring tones are about style & expression. People have fun with them, use them as points of conversation, and yeah - sometimes to intentionally annoy (usually in a lighthearted manner). You don't understand this?

You can have your style & expression, but keep it for yourself. A ringtone is inherently intrusive into everyone's life near you. I DO have to listen to your phone when it rings nearby.

If you dress like Wham or Lady Gaga, that's up to you. I don't have to look at you.

Turning off the phone in situations where it is disruptive is a best practice. I don't understand people who have their phone go off in meetings. Is that cool? No, it's not. Is a meeting a place to express yourself? Hardly. Do we have to express ourselves every stupid second on this planet? Maybe not.

Then again, these days the real luxury is to be not reachable at all. Which also answers the question about the ringtone. :)

I think the iPhone is an amazing phone, however, I find it extremely stupid that you can't set anything as a ringtone. It's a phone after all, the ringtone is like the background picture of a computer, only much more useful. People would not like it if they couldn't use any background picture you want. Okay so you have 25 different ringtones on the iPhone, but most people still use the same ones. Each time I hear an iPhone ring, it's almost always the same tone, which is pretty boring and annoying, especially if you own an iPhone, you keep thinking that your phone is ringing.

It's not a BIG deal, but why is it so hard to let people just use any ringtone they want? There is obviously no technical limitation, so why not? It's just a matter of decision.

Quick thanks to sbrhwkp3 for posting those instructions. Works great. Easy and free.

but why is it so hard to let people just use any ringtone they want?

One word... licensing

The fact remains that the powers that be do not feel you own your content to use as you please. You bought that song, yes. You want to use it as a ringtone? We want extra $. Because they can.
