How very sad...

Incredible... Apple has completely lost the fundamental reasons why I fell in love with it. Look at Apple these days, makes me feel like it is some bastard genetically deformed copy of a once highly unique company.

Makes me think of the South Park Episode with the Trapperkeeper, where Cartman turns into this giant freak of nature fused with... ugh just watch Akira and you'll know what I mean ;)

I'm upset that they are removing more and more options and replacing them with restrictions! I too used to download trailers, simply because I store them on an external HDD for use during lectures and personally I enjoy looking at Trailers compare them with the shots shown in them that just never makes it into the final cut (like MIB 3)

For filmmakers and film lovers trailers are very important and are valued highly. Why do you think there are trailer awards out there?

Anyway, damn you Apple for ruining the company I once used to know (Sing the last part as Gotye or be real hard core and sing it like Gotye but by Buk Lau :p )

For anyone who gets the last bit of my sentence with Buk Lau... I love you :D

Here's some reasons:

- To watch them more than once without having to download/stream/cache* them again. Many people still have slow internet speeds and might like to prefer not to have to wait to load a trailer again when they can have a local copy that plays immediately.

- To keep in case you want to watch later and be certain you will be able to.

- Because you like having a local copy of a trailer you particularly like.

- To be economical with any bandwidth/download allowance limits you may be subject to.

- To watch via a different device, for various reasons. For example, as I said in my first post in this thread, I like to put a bunch of trailers on a flash drive or hard drive and watch them on my big-screen TV (apparently this is considered old fashioned or something now..!).

- Maybe they collect them, as a hobby.

*depends on your definition of these terms. Either way, saves having to transfer the data from them to you multiple times.

Apple TV has trailers and you can stream them in 1080p no hassle with USB drives..

It is not hard to tell why Apple pulled it, it's a minority of people who download trailers anymore. You would waste physical hard space on a movie trailer? When you can just stream it on YouTube in 1080 (though it is compressed the quality is still great).

Clearly Apple figured very few people are downloading these trailers and even fewer in 1080, why bother offering it as an option? Personally, I don't see why they would bother pulling them, but then again this isn't really a huge loss.

Perhaps it's time Apple phased out Quicktime? My experience of streaming Quicktime video has never been good, while Netflix, Youtube and iPlayer all deliver reliable 720p streaming over a comparable connection.

QuickTime (framework) is core to both iOS and Mac OS X. They can't phase it out - it would need a replacement.

Poor decision from Apple

I cannot fathom why Apple did this. There is a huge difference between 720p and 1080p. For simple example, go to YouTube and watch a video with both, changing the resolution while the video is playing... BIG difference!
I always referred people to Apple's trailer site versus many others (such as Yahoo! movies.. phooey!) because of HD-ness. Now I'm lost :(

But wait!
HD-Trailers.net still has download links:
http://www.hd-trailers.net/page/1/

Thank you! I've already bookmarked their page and subscribed to their newsletter.. Now THAT's what I'm talkin' about!
I also love the fact that they have unusual movies, not just the biggest most popular stuff!

I'll be anxiously awaiting Apple's response as to why the BIG change!?

I don't think we need to worry that much.
Look at my last post on page 3.

The 1080p files are still there.
They just don't link to it.

So I think they will return to the way they were.

I always liked to download a batch of 1080p trailers and then watch them before weekend movies through XBMC. Thanks for the posting the links to those trailer websites. Can't stand Youtube's slow loading.

This really sux! I started watching these trailers in all their glory back in the day when the released the Phantom Menace as a test. This makes no sense to me... it's also been a showcase for my 27" iMac over the years to show people how amazing the screen is. Oh well...

They misunderstood Tim Cook's phrase "doubling down" for dumbing down, and this is not the first case. This is coming from a huge Mac fan :(

I surely hope this is temporary. This was the one place I looked for HQ trailers, as I'm a trailer collector.

I hope that Apple is readying 4K trailer downloads :)

If you replace '720' in the URL for the 720p embedded trailer with '1080' you can download the FullHD trailer.

I don't think this is permanent for Apple, since the 1080p trailers are still available on the servers.

Agree 100%. Believe me, you're not in the minority. As much as I hate to admit it, I was one of the many who pushed for the move away from physical discs. Mainly due to the horrible environmental impact from DVD's and packaged media. However, this has allowed companies greater control over how we use the media we purchase. It wasn't long ago that most people made mixed tapes for friends, burned CD's, all legal at the time and with little to no impact on record sales as companies still raked it in. Then came the digital age around the turn of the century, and things began to change.

The next step will be that when you "buy" a song on iTunes, it will never be able to be downloaded. It will be "transferred" to your "iCloud" instead. You will be allowed to stream it at will.

But a local copy will be seen as some sort of stolen good.

Having the trailer on hand and available to watch on my TV is pretty damn nice instead of having to go to a different room to my computer and watch the trailer on the small computer screen.

Simply buy an iTV and subscribe to the iMovie service for a small monthly iFee.

Problem solved!

Whatever happened to just collecting stamps...? LOL :)

Here's the newest Monsters Inc trailer in 1080p:
http://trailers.apple.com/movies/di...ty/monsteruniversity-itallbeganhere_1080p.mov

A bit odd, isn't it?[/COLOR]

1. Using that URL is likely a violation of Federal law relating to unauthorized access to a computer network.

2. I deleted quicktime from my computer. It is a format that is totally unnecessary, given that pretty much nobody uses it anymore.

Well that certainly sucks and is rather baffling. I've often downloaded movie trailers at 1080p, and stuck a load on a flash drive or hard drive to watch on my TV. I guess they don't want people like me to go to their trailer site anymore.
Downloading the trailers was the main reason I got the pro version.

Never knew Apple doing trailers was a thing. Page 2 surely?
If they moved stuff like this to Page 2 there'd be nothing for Page 1 these days. :p

It's not Apple's fault, I think tech has just hit a plateau. No big "wow" type mainsteam things anymore, it's just a convenience we take for granted. For me it peaked with the iPhone. Everything since has been solid, but it garners a "Oh, that's nice..." reaction and nothing more.

I have an AWESOME way I watch hot new trailers on an ENORMOUS screen. I go to the cinema. When I want to watch a less impressive version... YouTube.

I don't think that way is awesome. I don't like cinema. There's too much people around me and I don't like people.
Besides, who wants to pay 7€ to watch trailers!?

I really dont get why this is a big deal. Its a trailer, not a full movie. You're only watching it to see if you'll like a movie. I'm sure you can watch a 1 minute trailer in 720p for goodness sake.

First world problems...

Not that I watch trailers often

But nope, it's not just a matter of watching a 1 minute trailer at 720p

Many places DO NOT have broadband that can do this

It's either download and watch or not watch at all (not going to put it on pause for 15+ mins while it buffers a 1 min clip)

Noticed that as well. But still this is something weird.

I don't agree with you there.
I'm sitting on a 100Mbit line, and a monitor with a resolution at 2560x1440.
And 720p only takes up 25% of the screen.
And because I'm not using Safari, I'm not able to set the trailer to full screen.
So I'd rather have the option to download the trailer and play it in full screen in QuickTime.

And with a 100Mbit line i can download a 1080p trailer in seconds, so why not do that when I can.

Its not really a case of doing it 'because you can' though. I could download a 4k trailer in 10 minutes. I wouldn't simply because its a trailer. Sure I could understand for the full movie, but I reiterate, its a trailer.

It'd be like being upset that iTunes previews were only 192kbit. It's a free 'taster', you dont think to yourself 'oh this preview had poor video quality, thus the movie must be crap'.

1080p trailers is a nice perk, but its not like its the end of the world, unless of course we have some rather sad people who leave trailers running on their 80" screen 24/7 to show off.
