I often use Apple Trailers when I want to watch upcoming trailers to my most anticipated movies in 1080p. YouTube doesn't always have them in 1080p and I trust the quality from Apple more, so I'm pretty disappointed by this.

However, there is a way to get 1080p trailers to trailers that no longer have download links. All it takes is a little URL manipulating.

Apple's 1080p trailer URL's go like this:

http: //trailers.apple.com/movies/(studio name or abbreviation)/(movie title)/(movie title)-(trailer name)_h1080p.mov

For example, Pacific Rim just released a new "Production Journal" yesterday, so of course, it isn't available for download on Apple Trailers considering it's after the 22nd.

First, I clicked the "Studios" tab on the Apple Trailers homepage. Pacific Rim is a WB movie so I went to their section and looked at their titles. I know The Great Gatsby hasn't had a trailer for a while, so I checked their page. They still have all trailers available for download in 1080p. I copied the link to the 1080p download and then altered it to fit with the new Pacific Rim video, like this:

http: //trailers.apple.com/movies/wb/pacificrim/pacificrim-productionjournal_h1080p.mov

"productionjournal" can be replaced with "tlr1" or "tlr2" to get those in 1080p also, seeing as those links have also been removed from the movie page. They have a video called "Con Footage" which I couldn't figure out which trailer name to replace with, so you need to get creative with some titles, but most pages only post trailers so the typical "tlrX" will work.

I don't know how long this will work, if they'll always still have 1080p trailers on their server or not, but this trick works for now if you want to get any of your favorite trailers quick!

Edit: Oh, there looks to be an easier way. If this hasn't already been posted, then check here: http://blog.hd-trailers.net/2013/05...the-download-links-for-apple-movie-trailers/#

Seems like Apple is doing what it's latest trend is, by getting rid of features that they think only "pros" use.

They have to fight against it. They're trying to convince themselves and the consumer that Blu-Ray is already obsolete, but they can't come close to Blu-Ray quality in streaming/downloading at 1080p, so 720p is their only hope for delivering an 'equivalently' high quality product through their dictated mediums.

Well-said, sir.

And at any rate, it's just trailers. It's not going to matter to normal consumers because they use trailers to see if they want to watch a movie. Whether that trailer is in 720 or 1080, especially on a tiny computer screen is really unimportant to them.

Ouch... Filmmakers, photographers and film and art lovers are not 'a group' Apple cares about any more?

I download these trailers and show them to my friends. If I can't download them, my friends won't see them and won't be exposed to that advertising and hence will be less likely to see the movie. I'd think the studios would care more about getting butts in the seats than they would about counting views.

I think they'd just say, send them a link. Practical for you? No. Backasswards thinking by the studios? Always.

Assuming you're not just trolling after reading my most recent post before this, yes, and what is wrong with that? Please expand upon what you mean if you have a point rather than an empty question with no context, as otherwise it isn't really clear what you mean. :)

I didnt read past your original post sorry.

I know a guy who still backs up to floppy disks. Do you want his number? you can meet up and talk about the good ol days :p

Two things:

1. Trailers are surely transitory, fleeting things, whose existence is only meaningful before the film comes out.

2. Surely, if you can watch it, you can download it.

You say that, but streaming video over the internet is older than USB drives are. :p

It is not hard to tell why Apple pulled it, it's a minority of people who download trailers anymore. You would waste physical hard space on a movie trailer? When you can just stream it on YouTube in 1080 (though it is compressed the quality is still great).

Clearly Apple figured very few people are downloading these trailers and even fewer in 1080, why bother offering it as an option? Personally, I don't see why they would bother pulling them, but then again this isn't really a huge loss.

Your rationalizing is illogical. If so few people are downloading these trailers what does it hurt to leave the option there. Keep in mind you're downloading the same file that's being streamed, it takes up space on the server whether the download option is there or not. By removing it you're now making people stream it from your server every time they see it, which only increases your network traffic.

Removing the downloads is just about one thing -- control. And I think one of the first three comments on this thread pointed that out, too. This is either movie studios getting their panties in a knot over the idea someone, somewhere may be able to possibly view something years from now whether they like it or not (oh noes!), or it's Apple trying to lock down content even more to their own walled garden of software and iDevices.

You can view and download years later from a host of other websites.
It is not like Apple is the only source of 1080p movie trailers, everything is moving toward streaming and being online, it does not matter how much you are against it, it won't change anything. So call it "control" call it whatever you want but frankly Apple does not care about people stuck in the past. Never have. Why do you think their new MacBooks and iMacs don't have a disk drive? Downloading is moving out of the way too, it is early stages obviously, but in 10 years mostly everything will be streamable. Download will be a legacy thing.

I don't understand this. Apple isn't the only source for movie trailers... Just stop using it and go somewhere else. Youtube offers downloads I think.

It appears that Apple has begun quietly phasing out its trailer download options from the trailers.apple.com website, effectively eliminating 1080p trailer availability.

Previously, the site gave users the ability to stream trailers in 480p or 720p, along with providing download options for 480p, 720p, and 1080p. Trailers uploaded to the site after an approximate date of May 22 no longer have any download options and can only be streamed in-browser at 480p or 720p.

ImageTrailer options before 5/22
ImageTrailer options after 5/22
While trailers uploaded before May 22 can still be downloaded, Apple appears to be removing the option from movies with multiple trailers that have a trailer uploaded after that date. For example, Disney Pixar's Monsters University has trailers that were uploaded on the following dates: 6/20/12, 3/08/13, 5/20/13, and 5/22/13. None of these trailers have download options.

Disney's Planes, on the other hand, has trailers that were uploaded on the following dates: 3/15/13, 04/04/13, and 5/17/13. Each of these trailers can still be downloaded at all resolutions, including 1080p.

So, while older trailers can still be downloaded from the site, Apple appears to be removing downloads from older trailers as newer trailers are added, slowly phasing out the availability of trailer downloads altogether.

It is not clear at this point why Apple has begun phasing out movie trailer downloads, but we have contacted the company for more information.

(Thanks Eduardo and Theo!)

How can you NOT understand it? Apple's Trailer-site has been my and many other users primary source for movietrailers in 1080p for years, and now suddenly they stop offering those full-hd trailers and you're confused as to why people are wondering about it? No one's claiming that there aren't other sources for trailers but Apple's site has been so much more convenient.

This is MANDATORY from now on and 1080p will not come back.

The film industry does not want consumers to have free access to 1080p quality, not even the trailers (which are COMMERCIALS!).

Just because it's possible to take full res screenshots.

All professional services had to stop making 1080p trailers available.

Moviefone for example always uploaded 1080p trailers to Youtube, but like all other companies they had to stop that a few days ago. Now the maximum you get for new trailers on their site AND on Youtube is 720p.

Maybe it's because I'm not lazy. I don't have a problem going thru other sources and looking for it.

I don't think it's just about laziness and convenience. It's also about quality. YouTube, Yahoo and others usually don't have trailers in as high a quality as the Apple trailers site seems to, at least in my experience.

Not that even the trailers on Apple's site are exactly Blu-ray quality, but maybe I shouldn't even mention the B-word for fear of sparking even more ire from my fellow Apple-using film-fans… :D

But still, watching one of the 1080p trailers from Apple's site is usually a lot nicer than the same trailer on YouTube, again, in my experience at least. This is even more evident on a nice big TV.

Anyway, with the amount I'm typing about his one issue they'll probably put the links back on Monday and all of us who care can breathe a sigh of relief *optimistic face*

I don't think that way is awesome. I don't like cinema. There's too much people around me and I don't like people.
Besides, who wants to pay 7€ to watch trailers!?

Lol, but going to website, seeking out your trailer, downloading it to your pc, transferring it to a thumb drive, bringing it in your living room, plugging it into your tv, browsing the file system with a cludgy remote, and playing it on your tv somehow seems more normal to some commenters here!?!
I've never gone to the cinema only to see a trailer, btw. My point is- I think people are being ridiculous. I watch trailers all the time on slashfilm, 90% of them are YouTube links.. very few of them are hd. Who cares? It is a 30 second to 2 minute clip to tease the story line and convince you to watch the film. Who are these people that treat it like a film in itself, which must be loaded in high resolution on their big screens in what I could only refer to as a ceremonial way..? The idea of it makes me chuckle.. I'm a movie buff/movie snob. So are most of my friends, we all hang out on slashfilm & read tidbits of new films and attend the cinema quite regularly.. I've literally NEVER heard of anybody, except for on this board, thinking a trailer is the big deal that people here are making it out to be. As I said, the most rabid cinema enthusiasts that I'm aware of watch trailers first in a window on their pc, and perhaps again at the cinema if they're attending a similar movie and it happens to play.. doesn't seem like it diminishes their enjoyment of, you know, the ACTUAL film, one iota.. the manner in which they viewed the trailer.

There will be no other sources! (except ILLEGAL ones)

As I said, thanks to the film industry ALL services have to stop uploading 1080p trailers.

That includes official uploads to Youtube....like Moviefone
http://www.youtube.com/user/MoviefoneVideo/videos?view=0

They always uploaded 1080p trailers....now it's 720p MAX

I'll put my money on migrating this sot of offerings to iTunes (or whatever incarnations fold out of it). I'll bet we learn something at WWDC.

@demodave

Nope. 1080p trailers are not allowed anymore, except for "sources" where screenshots are not possible.

Big deal, get over it. Thats the only option here. Bitching about such a trivial thing (on the grand scale of things) is clearly getting you nowhere.

You seem to be stating all this as if you have actual facts / a sourced explanation about it. Do you know something the rest of us don't, or are you just guessing that 1080p download links aren't coming back?

Every company (Moviefone, Apple, Yahoo...) needs permission to publish trailers.
The new guidelines prohibit 1080p.

Ok… but which guidelines are you referring to though? Guidelines you've personally seen or heard about? Or guidelines you are presuming exist through pure guesswork? If you could tell us how you know (if you do 'know') perhaps MacRumors' article could be updated with the reason for the change.

If it is true they are not coming back due to guidelines that must be followed, it seems odd that the files are still up on the servers days later, doesn't it?

No Bueno....

This really is not good. I count on a high quality download to enhance my weekly youth ministry service... WHY APPLE.... WHY???!!!! I often worry that apple thinks too highly of itself.. and trust me... I'm an apple evangelist!!
