Nope. 1080p trailers are not allowed anymore, except for "sources" where screenshots are not possible.

May you care to give us a source? When you triumphantly scream out the reason for Apple pulling 1080 trailers without a single source, it's actually quite rude, even if it's correct... please back it up for us!

We use this feature all the time because we have no phones or cable at our location, only electric. We download videos using our iPhones and the transfer them to the computer to watch.

I'm not surprised. I have a suspicion that they will stop offering Podcasts for download.

Where will it end?

Will Apple restrict their systems to only be able to run/recharge from the proprietary Apple power grid?

Will Apple create 802.11aapl so that you have to buy an Apple access point to use WiFi (and a $99 dongle that will connect you to the universal 802.11 standard)?

</sarcasm>

Wow - seriously, don't you gals see the writing on the wall? Apple wants to charge for everything, and making the free version sucky quality is one of the first steps.

Hollywood doesn't want you to own content anymore. That has been a very conscious decision on their part. DVDs are absolutely going away.

If you die you cannot legally bequeath your iTunes purchased music to your kids. You do not own that music.

The goal is for you to buy a version an own it only for a time on specific devices. Apple lacks power to insist on giving you more rights. If apple doesn't agree to the movie and music companies' terms, Google will quickly agree.

When you buy digital content you don't have the same ownership and rights you did buying a CD or a DVD.

Excuse me if my saying the truth makes me a troll. Cue calling me a troll in 5, 4, 3, 2....

Hollywood tightens the noose on our freedom to watch yet we keep going to theaters in droves and buying (and renting) blu-rays and dvds.

Apple, bit-by-bit, becomes more and more like the image on the screen in their 1984 commercial (maybe it wasn't really 1984, but 2084 and we WILL be the mindless people in the audience watching Apple on the screen tell us what to do), yet we keep rushing to the Apple store to buy their products.

I'm not a trailers watcher, so this decision doesn't much affect me directly, but indirectly, it's more power and control to Hollywood and Apple that will affect me in another way down the road.

At some point, we need to start keeping our wallets in our pocket and let our voices be heard. But until then, we'll keep getting the shaft.

If (almost) every customer would go on strike for just 2 weeks and buy no movie ticket - or bluray/dvd.

The movie industry would reverse pretty much every decision the customer would want to have reversed. EVERY SINGLE ONE.

People actually have all the power in the world, but they don't use it...
cause the vast majority of people are idiots, they don't care about anything.

They don't realize that caring would actually CHANGE things to THEIR favor.
Leave them more money, give them more rights.....and so on.

I think you mean 'consumer'! Autocorrect strikes again perhaps?! Though the thought of only costumers boycotting movies is an amusing one. There would be no costumes! :D

But I think you make a good point here, it's because most people put up with nonsense from others that it keeps happening.

... I'm guessing you don't have a source for your past definitive statements in this thread though?

I would also like to see a source, but he may be onto something. Everything uploaded after the 23rd on Moviefone's channel also seems to be 720p only.

Perhaps it's time Apple phased out Quicktime? My experience of streaming Quicktime video has never been good, while Netflix, Youtube and iPlayer all deliver reliable 720p streaming over a comparable connection.
Youtube streams decently? Where and when? Only had problems just streaming 720p, have to let it load for a minute or two when not downloading anything else to avoid the long pauses.

You're not a troll when it comes to my opinion. Sadly, this seems very plausible.

On the other hand, isn't Apple the one who convinced the recording industry to let it sell tracks without any DRM?

New thing ?

Well, this is the first time i've head of this site ....

Its invisible to people going to Apple.com since there is no link on the Support pages either as to how to get there.

I always used iTunes anyway for this ... I assume it comes from the same place. Is this not for client users ?

I'm not trying to be snide with this comment: What are some of the demands that you have in mind that almost every customer should, or might want to, rally behind to send a message out to the movie industry?

Bummer

This is a serious bummer, now they take away 1080p and Downloading (saving locally) is gone.

I've enjoyed them both for years...this sucks, both things were reasons I enjoyed my trailers from Apple.

Youtube offers downloads I think.

Yes... that must be why they got upset when Microsoft added that download button to their own YouTube app.

The film industry does not want consumers to have free access to 1080p quality, not even the trailers (which are COMMERCIALS!).

Maybe so we don''t torment them by replaying the unjustified praise and hype they put in them when the movie is revealed to be incredibly bad later. :D Can anyone else imagine their embarrassment at hearing a trailer praising Battlefield Earth as "the best movie of the year" as they like to for every. freakin'. movie. now.

A thought has occurred to me: What if this change is intended to make it easier for the Studios to send their (frequently overzealous) copyright takedown notices on YouTube and other video sites? Their bots could now automatically flag any new 1080p content.

update from Apple Customer Service

Folks, I was one of the tipsters that tried to publicize this via MacRumors (and other publications) hoping to get an official answer from Apple, OR hoping enough people would write in to customer service and request this feature be reinstated.

I did get a formal but short reply from Apple Customer Service yesterday:

" I'm sincerely sorry for the inconvenience your experiencing with downloading movie trailers. After consulting my senior advisors they have informed me that you are longer able to download movie trailer you can however stream them."

So, again, this is no glitch and looks like a major change is underway. Oh well, it was a good run, and FYI, this site goes back to when Apple first proffered the trailer for "Phantom Menace" in 1999. That's how quicktime got on the map and turned the tide away from Real Player and whatever options were available in those days.

Personally I think it's a reclaiming of content and creative property, etc., and it won't be coming back as a free feature. Think about it: iTunes sells music videos, why should they sell sensational movie clips with fantastic music of the same duration?

Why?

The question is why would you download a trailer?

Apple is moving to the cloud and most people can stream Full HD and even Netflix is streaming 3D movies so the idea of saving a 2 minute trailer to a hard drive to view is kind of laughable these days. Most movies are not worth owning so why would you store their trailer's.

I usually download trailers for two reasons, first is that out here in rural MI my broadband is not fast enough to stream HD video, so if I want to watch a video I must download it first. My bandwidth is also capped at 10GB/month, so if I want to watch a video more than once, I must download it lest I eat up bandwidth with multiple viewings.

I realize Apple believe everyone has cheap unlimited bandwidth, but in the real world that just isn't the case. I'm using an external yagi antenna to pull in a 4g signal, but Verizon still caps my monthly usage, and during busy hours my speeds are just slightly faster than dialup. Yes I've suggested to Verizon customer service that if I'm not getting 4G speeds all of time that my bill should be pro-rated, but they just laugh at me. For good reason, I might add, because they know I have no other choice. It's a monopoly and since rural Americans are aginst gubmint regulations Verizon knows they have nothing to fear from customers.

1. Using that URL is likely a violation of Federal law relating to unauthorized access to a computer network.

2. I deleted quicktime from my computer. It is a format that is totally unnecessary, given that pretty much nobody uses it anymore.

Not to be snarky but I doubt you deleted QuickTime from your Mac. You may have deleted the QuickTime Player app but surly not (the) QuickTime (framework). Or else, you're likely need to re-install OS X... ;)

Thanks for passing the additional information on Toltec21. That just sucks, we've lost 1080 and downloading for the cost of breadcrumbs. Bummer.

I hope Apple realizes that unless they change their site back to allowing trailer downloads, they've lost me as a visitor forever. The ability to download is the only thing that differentiated their trailer page from other online trailer sources. Without only the streaming option, I might as well just get my trailers from Youtube or Yahoo.
