Not being able to download isn't an issue for me, however they should have added a 1080p stream option. Most annoying (assuming I'm not missing the obvious) is that you cannot expand the 720p stream trailer to full screen.

As has been pointed out several times, the studios won't let anyone have 1080p trailers anymore.

And you get your information from where?

YouTube has a lot of 1080p movie trailers including all of the current in Theater clips. They can't be downloaded but YouTube never let anyone legally download them to begin with.

It's likely contract renewal failure that Apple couldn't get done in time that YouTube (Google) did.

Seems to happening a lot lately if you listen to "rumors".

As has been pointed out several times ...and challenged to be backed up by some kind of evidence, which the person making the claim the most has utterly failed to do, despite coming back to post in the thread again and ignoring people asking for a source (if they have one, which now seems unlikely).

I mean anyone can make definitive statements about why something has happened, but unless you have some kind of source or evidence to back up your claim it's no better than just guessing.

All we *know* is the download and 1080p links have gone. Why that is has not been established. The studios not letting Apple, or others, have 1080p trailers any more is but one possibility that has yet to be backed up by anything other than speculation.

Do you mean on the AppleTV or something (not a device I own...)? On the computer there is a full screen button on the controls when you hover over the trailer with your mouse pointer.

I use Chrome on my iMac and never noticed that option, I'll try it out with Safari later. Thanks.

Yeah good luck finding new upcoming trailers of major U.S. studios in 1080p on official Youtube channels or anywhere else....maybe some private person will upload some (from questionable sources) but the sources for 1080p will die out pretty soon in the next few weeks.

I can't post personal emails but it doesn't matter, you'll see.

These trailers where uploaded WEEKS AGO. The switch to disallow 1080p was made a few DAYS AGO.
Already published trailers do not have to get deleted.

New trailers will not have 1080p anymore.

That's an agreement between all major U.S. studios.

Independent or European films may continue to offer 1080p (for now).

Greater Reliance on iCloud

I suspect that Apple made this decision to further reinforce their "in the cloud" business model of streaming content versus downloading and retaining content. In previous interviews Apple indicated a similar finding for their decision to not include Blu-ray players in desktop models. Their argument was that people would rather stream content as it further supports the adoption of mobile devices, phones and tablets.

Another supporting reason for ditching the downloads is to retain greater control of the content. I suspect the large movie studios did not enjoy Apple simply giving away free HD downloads of their content, even if they were only two minute teaser trailers.

As you can imagine the studios/publishers do not want to make a big announcement:
"Hey people listen up, guess what, we're taking away 1080p!!!".

They want to do that as quiet as possible.

Every official outlet that makes trailers available is in contact with the publishers, to get the trailers and permission to publish them.
They where asked to stop publishing 1080p versions and to not make official press statements about this.

I've got one of those emails of a publisher explaining that in front of me.

So you have no proof other than an "email" that you can't show anyone?

Good one... I've got a Bridge in Brooklyn I'll sell you. I have the papers right here in front of me.

If the studios really are in the process of pulling the 1080p trailers… that's simultaneously annoying and kind of funny, in a very pathetic way. I don't see what it would achieve other than harming their promotional effectiveness.

I realise downloading trailers to keep might be a niche hobby, but I don't think alienating people who are probably amongst the most passionate of film fans would be a great marketing strategy.

As has been previously stated, 1080p trailers are still being posted for newer movies. Haute Cuisine has had its trailer uploaded today (May 28th) and the 1080p version is located at http://trailers.apple.com/movies/weinstein/hautecuisine/hautecuisine-tlr1_h1080p.mov

Further to my earlier comment, as suspected, no full screen option when streaming trailers in Chrome, all fine in Safari.

Glad trying it out in Safari worked out for you.

I also checked a clip for 'The East' released today, and that has a 1080p file available too (not linked on the page of course).

I would guess Apple has many more trailers ready to post in the coming days, so it may be some unspecified period of time (days… weeks?) where there will not be any more 1080p trailers. If they are indeed going away permanently.

We'll see how long those hidden links will continue to exist.

Apple TV is getting its trailers from that source, so it will take some time for Apple to change their workflow and maybe even the Apple TV software.

I also want to mention that the date shown on the Apple Trailer website is NOT the upload date.
Those trailers and their graphics get uploaded in advance and only become visible at a specific date.

Just answer me this: Why? what reason do they actually have to remove 1080p?

Because the studios don't want people to have free access to full resolution movie content, for clips or screenshots.

1080p trailers are still allowed in cases where download AND screenshots are not possible.

Full Screen is the Real Issue

I noticed this change last week--I believe it coincided with the Apple Store design tweak/refresh that was reported at the time. In any case, it puts a pretty serious blow in my movie trailer watching habits. Apple was one of the few places I could go to get a nice, clean experience.

The lack of full screen viewing is inexcusable. I can do without 1080p (720p is usually fine unless you have really HUGE screen).

My guess is this is motivated by the movie studios. Perhaps this was one concession they gave them in exchange for something else in negotiations? I don't know. But movie studios are CRAZY about "controlling the message" and this gives them the ability to give other media outlets "exclusive 1080p" access stuff like that.

But still, that we can't go full screen is a huge fail by Apple. And I really doubt that has anything to do with the movie studios and more about Apple dropping the ball.

Between my Apple TV, iPad, iPhone, and Macbook Air, I have trailers on tap 24/7. No biggie.

1080p is not "full resolution" for most movies (not the kind we're discussing here at least), it's just the maximum resolution they tend to sell online or via Blu-ray discs. Is that what you mean?

And as a reason it still makes no sense anyway.

The lack of full screen viewing is inexcusable.

See earlier comments, full screen still works in Safari, it's probably the browser you're using.
