God, everything isn't going to come down to Google vs. Apple, is it? I don't see this so much as a slam on Google but more of a UI issue. My yardstick for this kind of thing is my wife who is very intelligent but not into tech, and she has stumbled over that button not being labeled "search." I wouldn't be surprised to hear that others have complained about it not being clear.
I'm with you on this one. It still says "Google" in the search box after all. This is just clarifying the button's true purpose.

I also noticed that when he was talking about the new Mail he didn't mention Google and only said Mobile Me, Yahoo & Exchange nor were they part of the accounts set up in the demo and he didn't say anything about Push Gmail.

Also nothing has been said about Maps, no latitude, search by voice, navigation...nothing

Don't read into this change. The timing is bad, but the change was made because Google was being used as a verb on that button (like Search is being used as a verb on the button now), and Google doesn't want their trademark diluted like that.

oh well who cares, if they change it, i will then just change it back to google. If they dont allow me to use google and expect me to keep typing in the address every-time, then i just wont buy from apple.

It's a good thing,

Google has everyone wrapped around there little finger, and so one seems to notice.

But they are evil and we should fight now!

Switching to Bing will be a bad move for Apple, the Bing search engine is incredibly weak. You only have to do a single search on it to be able to see it is profits driven, the search isn't near as comprehensive as googles. Microsoft should just step aside and let the known pioneers of search engines carry on.

I hope Bing goes under. It's not fit for purpose!

Yeah, replacing the button's text and calling it "Search" instead of "Google" may actually be per Google's request, and not directly related to switching search providers. Using "Google" as a substitute for "Search" on the button weakens the trademark.

Just wait until Google pulls its support for Maps on iPhone. We'll see how much Apple is laughing when the only map solution is an expensive, third-party app.

Apple bought a mapping company. Like others have said.. Apple is prepared for anything.

Hopefully we could choose the search engine we prefer on our device... But I'm not holding my breath.:p

You mean like you can now?(as long as it's Google or Yahoo, which IS Bing)

Don't you think it's funny that the same people who think this is bad/evil/communist are the same ones who do nothing but whine about Apples "restrictions"and"walled garden"?

If they did that and I were a Google stockholder I'd be pissed.Maps makes money.

Ok... but it now uses Google suggestions during the search. So in a way, it's MORE integrated with Google.

Whoa! I think this is big news. The previously BFF relationship between Google and Apple has clearly been deteriorating over the past year or two and this may be another sign that the inevitable split is coming.

As somebody mentioned earlier, not having google maps as the Maps function would really suck. I wonder if a bunch of apps that use the map would also have to be rewritten.

I haven't really tried Bing but so far Google has never given me a reason to.

Are there really a lot of people out there that actually use Yahoo to search anymore?

Yahoo is now just rebranded Bing.

Wrong!

Apple bought the word "Search" and has all the rights to it. They will now be using it in all their devices. Any other entity that attempts to utilize this word will have to deal with Apple's legal team.

Someone seems to be forgetting that Apple already bought out a mapping company. If Google pulled support, which they wont, Apple would just replace it with their own system.

Google Maps is open to anyone to develop for, Maps on the iPhone is written by Apple, not Google, it just ties into the Google API's. I would bet hell will freeze over before Google blocks the iPhone OS from accessing its systems.

You know that kind of makes me wonder.Maybe they have a full blown MS Office replacement and Photoshop replacement ready to go in case either company pulls support for Mac.Kind of the same way OS X was intel native from the start...

Push gmail is done through Activesync which is an exchange setup in mail on the iPhone.

Um, iWork?

The only applications in the MS Office:Mac bundle are Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Entourage, all of which Apple already has their own versions of. So if Microsoft was to pull Mac support, Apple would not need to work to fill any gaps.

Of course it says Google. That's to remind you what engine you selected in settings.

Shouldn't the Search button also say Google then? To remind you what engine you will be Searching with?

Just make Google's page an icon!

I had the impression that MS Work did more.I stand corrected.

I had that wrong too.

I can't think of a better example of why Apple's interests are in conflict with those of Google and Adobe.

Apple already knows what it's like to have it's very existence completely in the hands of another company, like Microsoft (Office) or Adobe (Photoshop). If either of those companies had stopped supporting Mac OS when Apple was most vulnerable, it's unlikely that the company could have survived. Motorola was another example (G4), then IBM (G5). Neither of these "partners" could give Jobs what he needed to increase market share and it's doubtful that Apple could have survived long term with either of them.

So Apple creates iWork and iLife, switches to Intel, gets MS to guarantee Office for five years, launches Aperture and Final Cut, buys a chip design co. and a mapping co. and a mobile ad co.

And they -- not Google -- developed the Google Maps for iPhone app.

They did this not to take over the world or bludgeon the competition but to determine their own destiny. It would be irresponsible for any CEO to do otherwise.

Apple removed their own branding from their physical keyboards not so long ago. In many ways, Apple values functionality and simplicity over branding, marketing, business relationships, or even sentimentality. I don't read anything into this, other than it being bad timing.
